Perceptions Of Special Education And General Education Teachers On Co-Teaching Of Students With Disabilities In Outheast Georgia School Systems, Deborah Richardson

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The researcher's purpose of this study was to understand perceptions of co-teaching by special education and general education teachers, and how those perceptions make the implementation of co-teaching for students with disabilities in the general education classroom successful. The study examined teacher perceptions on training for co-teaching, recommended practices for co-teaching, and supports needed for the co-teaching team. The researcher administered a Likert-scale survey, Perceptions of Co-Teaching Survey developed by Vance Austin (2001) to 45 special education and 98 general education teachers with co-teaching experience from three school districts in southeast Georgia. Teacher perceptions in three different areas were addressed: …

Synthesis And Study Of Fluorinated Thiophenes, Bithiophenes And Trithiophenes: Models For The Polymeric Material, Nashaat Turkman Jan 2008

Synthesis And Study Of Fluorinated Thiophenes, Bithiophenes And Trithiophenes: Models For The Polymeric Material, Nashaat Turkman

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

3-Fluorothiophene is a small molecule and the known syntheses for this molecule are far from being straight forward and suffer from many drawbacks such as low yield, long synthetic procedures and the use of expensive or dangerous fluorinating agents. The synthesis of 3-fluorothiophene was accomplished in four steps and 49% overall yield by a very convenient method. 2,5-Dibromo-3-fluorothiophene was prepared in essentially one step synthesis involving a decarboxylation-bromination reaction. Both 3-fluorothiophene and 2,5-dibromo-3-fluorothiophene are potential monomers for a wide variety of fluorinated polythiophenes. Fluoroalkyl thiophene monomers, dimers and trimers were prepared. 3-Heptanoylthiophene is a key intermediate in the synthesis of …

Associative Retrieval Processes In Episodic Memory, Michael J. Kahana, Marc W. Howard, Sean M. Polyn

Psychology - All Scholarship

Association and context constitute two of the central ideas in the history of episodic memory research. Following a brief discussion of the history of these ideas, we review data that demonstrate the complementary roles of temporal contiguity and semantic relatedness in determining the order in which subjects recall lists of items and the timing of their successive recalls. These analyses reveal that temporal contiguity effects persist over very long time scales, a result that challenges traditional psychological and neuroscientific models of association. The form of the temporal contiguity effect is conserved across all of the major recall tasks and even …

Institutions Matter: Why The Herder Problem Is Not A Prisoner's Dilemma, Daniel H. C., Peter Z. Grossman Jan 2008

Institutions Matter: Why The Herder Problem Is Not A Prisoner's Dilemma, Daniel H. C., Peter Z. Grossman

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

In the game theory literature, Garrett Hardin’s famous allegory of the “tragedy of the commons” has been modeled as a variant of the Prisoner’s Dilemma, labeled the Herder Problem (or, sometimes, the Commons Dilemma). This brief paper argues that important differences in the institutional structures of the standard Prisoner’s Dilemma and Herder Problem render the two games different in kind. Specifically, institutional impediments to communication and cooperation that ensure a dominant strategy of defection in the classic Prisoner’s Dilemma are absent in the Herder Problem. Their absence does not ensure that players will achieve a welfare-enhancing, cooperative solution to the …

Ecological Genetics Of Adaptive Life-History Phenotypes In The Cricket Allonemobius Socius, Diana Lea Huestis Jan 2008

Ecological Genetics Of Adaptive Life-History Phenotypes In The Cricket Allonemobius Socius, Diana Lea Huestis

Biology Dissertations - Archive

As many organisms inhabit unstable environments, the ability to respond to changing environmental conditions is highly adaptive, and results in the evolution of phenotypic plasticity. Thus, identifying the genetic basis and evolutionary origins of adaptive life-history phenotypes, such as phenotypic plasticity, is an active and important research area within the field of evolutionary biology. In the last two decades, gene-expression techniques have been developed which allow genes to be identified and gene-expression levels measured in a range of species, reducing dependence on classic genetic model systems and allowing an array of species with interesting ecological phenotypes to be used as …

A Theoretical Exploration Of The Modern Health Care Crisis In The United States And The Lack Of Universal Health Care Coverage., Christopher Biedenbach

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

The United States is unique amongst industrialized wealthy nations in not providing health care to all of its citizens. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a theoretical explanation as to why the United States does not offer health care to all of its citizens when so many other nations do. The approach is necessarily comparative. For this paper, I compare three nations: the United States, Norway and Canada as prototypical nations (in reference to health care provision) based upon levels of government involvement in health care. I explore the historical development of health care in each of the …

Combined Scalability Coding Based On The Scalable Extension Of H.264/Avc, Sangseok Park Jan 2008

Combined Scalability Coding Based On The Scalable Extension Of H.264/Avc, Sangseok Park

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Fine-grain scalability (FGS) based on significant and refinement coding is one of the ways to achieve quality scalability by providing a graceful quality degradation through truncations of the FGS enhancement layer. This approach is useful for video conferencing and telephony on wireless networks, which need to ensure real-time and low-delay conditions since they are subject to serious bit rate fluctuations. The simplification of FGS is proposed to reduce the overall complexity for the Progressive Refinement (PR) slice. The one pass scanning structure is introduced to simplify the coding pass of the FGS layers and the code type method is also …

Peforming Under Pressure: An Examination Of Performance, Workload, And Measures Of Acute Stress, Robyn D. Petree

Psychology Theses - Archive

Although many organizations use in-basket simulations as a means of selection and development, empirical guidance regarding the design of in-baskets is lacking. This study sought to fill that gap by examining the relationships between workload, stress, and performance using an in-basket simulation. Workload was manipulated by creating three variations of a task, differing only in quantity of issues to be addressed, to see how people perform under conditions that represent too much work, a moderate amount of work, and not enough work. Salivary cortisol samples were examined to investigate participants' stress levels throughout the simulation. Results revealed that performance was …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Crosslinked Urethane Doped Polyesters For Vascular Tissue Engineering, Jagannath Dey Jan 2008

Synthesis And Characterization Of Crosslinked Urethane Doped Polyesters For Vascular Tissue Engineering, Jagannath Dey

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

Traditional crosslinked polyester elastomers are inherently weak, and the strategy of increasing crosslink density to improve their mechanical properties makes them brittle materials. Biodegradable polyurethanes, although strong and elastic, do not fare well in dynamic environments due to the onset of permanent deformation. The design and development of a soft, strong and completely elastic (100% recovery from deformation) material for tissue engineering still remains a challenge. Herein, we report the synthesis and evaluation of a new class of biodegradable elastomers, crosslinked polyurethane-doped polyesters (CUPEs), which is able to satisfy the need for soft, strong, and elastic biomaterials. Tensile strength of …

Catholic Social Teaching And Health Care For All, Patrick T. Mccormick M.S. Jan 2008

Catholic Social Teaching And Health Care For All, Patrick T. Mccormick M.S.

Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice

Over 47 million Americans find themselves without health insurance in the richest and most Christian nation in the world. Catholic Social Teaching views this situation as an unjust violation of a basic human right to medical care, arguing that all persons have the right to those goods and services necessary for the proper development of life. In making this claim, Catholic Social Teaching advances three biblical principles: (1) that all persons are sacred and social, (2) that God hears the cries of the poor, and (3) that believers are directed to make a preferential option for the poor. In addition, …

Ferrimagnetism And Magnetic Entropy Change For Tm/Re Multilayers, Maria Rodica Hossu Jan 2008

Ferrimagnetism And Magnetic Entropy Change For Tm/Re Multilayers, Maria Rodica Hossu

Physics Dissertations - Archive

Multilayers of Co/Tb, Ni/Gd, NiFe/Gd, CoFe/Gd and CoNi/Gd multilayers have been synthesized using dc magnetron sputtering and have been investigated experimentally by SQUID magnetometry. Due to the antiferromagnetic coupling between the transition metal and rare earth layers these systems behave like artificial ferrimagnets, with a minimum in total magnetic moment at compensation temperature. The measurement of magnetic moment (M) as a function of temperature (T) shows that magnetic phase transition occurs at different temperatures during the heating (superheating) and cooling (supercooling) cycles resulting in thermal hysteresis curve for M (T). Magnetic entropy change has been measured for CoFe/Gd and CoNi/Gd …

Electron Emission From Surfaces Resulting From Low Energy Positron Bombardment, Saurabh Mukherjee Jan 2008

Electron Emission From Surfaces Resulting From Low Energy Positron Bombardment, Saurabh Mukherjee

Physics Dissertations - Archive

Measurements of the secondary electron energy spectra resulting from very low energy positron bombardment of a polycrystalline Au and Cu (100) surfaces are presented that provide evidence for a single step transition from an unbound scattering state to an image potential bound state. The primary positron energy threshold for secondary electron emission and energy cutoff of the positron induced secondary electron energy peak are consistent with an Auger like process in which an incident positron make a transition from a scattering state to a surface-image potential bound while transferring all of the energy difference to an outgoing secondary electron. We …
