Reproductive Isolation In Drosophila: From Behavior To Genome, Daina Ma
Reproductive Isolation In Drosophila: From Behavior To Genome, Daina Ma
Biology Dissertations - Archive
In this study, I investigate factors underlying reproductive isolation in Drosophila. I begin (Part I) by measuring behavioral isolation between Zimbabwe and cosmopolitan D. melanogaster, and asking the following questions: What is the pattern? What are the sensory cues leading to isolation? In Part II, I present results of a genomic screen for candidate genes underlying behavioral isolation between Zimbabwe and cosmopolitan D. melanogaster. Then I turn to the genomic causes of postzygotic reproductive isolation (Parts III and IV): What are the possible genes associated with hybrid sterility? What are the relationships between fertility/sterility and genotypes and allelic expression? What …
Conditional Confidence Intervals Of Process Capability Indices Following Rejection Of Preliminary Tests, Jianchun Zhang
Conditional Confidence Intervals Of Process Capability Indices Following Rejection Of Preliminary Tests, Jianchun Zhang
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
Finding an ordinary confidence interval of an unknown parameter is well known, but finding a conditional confidence interval following rejection of a preliminary test is not so noted, especially for finding a conditional confidence interval of the process capability indices Cp or Cpk following rejection of some preliminary tests. This dissertation will provide some basic theories and computational methods for finding such conditional confidence intervals of the two process capability indices. The most basic method used in this dissertation is the general method for finding a confidence interval of an unknown parameter. Numerical methods are also used for finding the …
Comparison Of The Dna Methylation Patterns Between Interspecific Xenopus F1 Hybrids And Their Parental Species, Alie Patrick Koroma
Comparison Of The Dna Methylation Patterns Between Interspecific Xenopus F1 Hybrids And Their Parental Species, Alie Patrick Koroma
Biology Dissertations - Archive
In this study the main focus is to compare the methylation patterns of interspecific Xenopus F1 hybrids to the parental species using Methyl-Sensitive Amplification Polymorphisms (MSAPs). Genomic DNA was extracted from the liver and muscle tissues from a representative sample of F1 hybrids and the parental species (Xenopus laevis and X. muelleri). First, the MSAP markers were very effective in comparing the methylation patterns of hybrids and the parental species. Genetic analysis of 504 liver and 364 muscle MSAP markers revealed that these markers were highly polymorphic. Principal coordinate analysis showed four distinct clusters with the two parental species separate …

Effects Of The Exotic Invader, Tamarix Spp., On Aspects Of The Aquatic Ecosystem At Mccomb Creek, Presidio County, Texas, Jane Blaisdell Nellan Moore
Biology Dissertations - Archive
The effects of saltcedar, Tamarix spp., invasion in riparian zones of the western United States have been well documented. These include, but are not limited to soil salinization, and shifts in hydrology and water use. Comparatively unknown are the effects on the associated aquatic systems and if a significant increase in water salinity accompanies these invasions. Shifts in stream metabolism have been reported, but the impacts of saltcedar invasion on the algal species, which are the dominant primary producers in desert aquatic ecosystems, are unknown. A two year study was conducted in an oligotrophic desert stream, currently experiencing an invasion, …
The Unheard Voice Of Immigrant Muslim Women In The United States Post-9/11/2001, Erin Alkhaolany
The Unheard Voice Of Immigrant Muslim Women In The United States Post-9/11/2001, Erin Alkhaolany
Philosophy & Humanities Theses - Archive
Immigrant Muslim women in the United States experience difficulties, as most immigrants do, with integration into a new society. In order to better depict the reality that these women are actually experiencing a lack of voice to demonstrate their difficulties and subsequently receive assistance, I utilize intersectionality feminist theory to differentiate categories where analyses can lead to improved assimilation and ease in integration for these women. Specifically, the intersections of aspects such as religion, race, class, gender, and ethnicity are included as major points of concern in dissecting what it means to be an immigrant Muslim woman in the United …
Repression, Language, Resistance: An Analysis Of Jacksonian America Through Foucauldian Lens, Brandon D. Vestal
Repression, Language, Resistance: An Analysis Of Jacksonian America Through Foucauldian Lens, Brandon D. Vestal
Philosophy & Humanities Theses - Archive
During the age of Andrew Jackson (1824-1845), the United States experienced a social and political sea change that would leave the country changed forever. As Jackson served his country first as general and ultimately as president, his name came to represent a new brand of American Democracy. This expression of democracy that emerged during Jackson's life extended a politcal hand to the "common man" as represented by the yeoman farmer and urban laborer. However, as universal suffrage was granted to these common white men and the politcal landscape shifted from an elitist republic to a meritocracy, there were other politically …

Driving Force: An Exploration Of Texan Prius Drivers, Heather Champeau
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
The purpose of this study was to examine what Prius owners use their vehicle to tell the world about themselves and to discover whether this varies by gender. This was explored through the lens of situational simulation, a blending of Baudrillard's (1983) theory concerning simulation and current literature concerning gendered consumption of environmental goods and awareness.In-depth interviews with fourteen participants were the main source of data. The interview schedule was loosely based on the work of previous researchers (Heffner, Kurani and Turrentine 2007), though a unique questionnaire was included after interviews were complete. Participants were gathered using snowball methodology in …
Media Framing And Social Movements: A Case Study Of The Red Shirt Movement In Taiwan, Wen-Hsin Ho
Media Framing And Social Movements: A Case Study Of The Red Shirt Movement In Taiwan, Wen-Hsin Ho
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
In my thesis, I use the social movement literature and framing theory to examine the rapid rise and fall of Taiwan's Red Shirt social movement in 2006. The movement was against President Chen Shui-bian, who was accused of corruption; its main goal was to oust President Chen from office. From its inception in August 2006 to its demise in October 2006, this social movement swelled to include several hundred thousand participants, but collapsed nearly as quickly as it rose to prominence. The Red Shirt movement and the surrounding events were extensively covered by television, print, and Internet media. Many scholars …

Vietnamese Amerasians: A Study Of Identity Construction, Ky-Giao C. Nguyen
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
We define who we are by defining who we are not (Daniel 1996). What happens when we don't know who we are not, how can we determine who we are? What if the markers of family connections, community alliances and citizenship are missing and there are no peers with whom to make comparisons? "What are you? Where are you from?" Hispanic, Filipino, sometimes even Native American rather than Asian, are ethnicities often ascribed to Vietnamese Amerasians (children of Vietnamese and American parents). Curiously, for such a personal question, the reaction from others to the response "Vietnamese Amerasian" is often rejection …
The Relationship Between Science Literacy Levels And Religious Belief Among A Sample Of Community College Students, Wesley Philip Price
The Relationship Between Science Literacy Levels And Religious Belief Among A Sample Of Community College Students, Wesley Philip Price
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
The purpose of this study was to quantitatively explore how beliefs regarding creation and evolution are related. To this end, attitude structures, cognitive sociology, creation, evolution, science, status politics and world view are defined and related issues are explored. A questionnaire was administered to 348 North Lake College students. It was found that the controversy regarding creationists negating evolution is educational and political in nature. Implications suggest that a person's religious beliefs, academic understanding of evolution and science, and opinions regarding what can and cannot be taught in the science classroom are indicative of the creation-evolution controversy. Ultimately, this research …
Voice And Valence-Altering Operations In Falam Chin: A Role And Reference Grammar Approach, Deborah King
Voice And Valence-Altering Operations In Falam Chin: A Role And Reference Grammar Approach, Deborah King
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation describes and analyzes voice and valence-altering operations in Falam Chin, a Tibeto-Burman language of Burma. The data is explained within the framework of Role and Reference Grammar (RRG), which supplies several key concepts particularly useful for generalizing the behavior of the Falam Chin operations. The first is RRG's system of semantic decomposition, based on Dowty (1979), which is used to formulate each predicate's underlying logical structure (LS). Second is the concept of macroroles, generalized semantic roles actor and undergoer, which are assigned to the arguments of a predicate according to a hierarchy of LS positions. M-transitivity refers to …

Event Recognition From Ambient Assistive Living Technologies, Eric William Becker
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
As the population ages and technology advances, a need exists for creating ambient intelligent systems to be placed within the home environment. Attitudes towards technology have been changing, and home monitoring is now considered a less expensive and desirable alternative. Ideally, such systems should be small, wireless, and take the minimum of effort and cost to install and place within the home. In order to detect human activity in an assistive environment, key questions about the construction and operation of the technology and methods needed to detect that activity. To that end, a computational framework has been created inside an …
Advanced Software Testing Techniques Based On Combinatorial Design, Wenhua Wang
Advanced Software Testing Techniques Based On Combinatorial Design, Wenhua Wang
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Combinatorial testing refers to a testing strategy that applies the principles of combinatorial design to the domain of software test generation. Given a system with k parameters, combinatorial testing requires all the combinations involving t out of k parameters be covered at least once, where t is typically much smaller than k. The key insight behind combinatorial testing is that while the behavior of a system may be affected by many parameters, most faults are caused by interactions involving only a small number of parameters. Empirical studies have shown that combinatorial testing can dramatically reduce the number of tests while …
Information-Driven Data Gathering In Wireless Sensor Networks, Jing Wang
Information-Driven Data Gathering In Wireless Sensor Networks, Jing Wang
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Since the advance of wireless technology enables the mass production of low-cost, small-sized sensor nodes, sensor nodes can be densely deployed in an area for high tolerance to node failure or to achieve better coverage statistically. The redundancy of sensor nodes results in the temporal and spatial correlation of sensory data, which motivates the information-driven data gathering approaches for wireless sensor networks (WSNs).Since existing approaches target at the sensory data that are already highly correlated with each other, little attention has been paid to the idea of changing the sampling schedules of the sensor nodes to reduce the correlation among …

Finance and Real Estate Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation consists of three distinct essays. The first essay provides initial empirical evidence on the usefulness of consumer confidence index and investor optimism index in predicting REIT price movements. I find evidence of uni-directional Granger causality from REIT returns to the change in Michigan consumer sentiment index for the period 1978 - 2008. I find a negative and statistically significant relationship between the level of Michigan consumer sentiment index in one month and the FTSE/NAREIT US REIT returns in the next one, six, and twelve months. On the other hand, I find a positive and statistically significant relationship between …

Alcott And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Public Sphere: Identity, Privacy, And Publication In Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, Leslie Bukowski
English Theses - Archive
An aspect of Louisa May Alcott's novel Little Women that has not been examined is the tension between the public and private spheres within the text. Since the text is semi-autobiographical in nature, issues of public and private occur throughout Little Women where the March family, initially represented within an enclosure of domesticity, move into the public sphere around them. This movement alters the prevailing public discourse before ushering in a second movement: the drawing members of the public sphere into domesticity, adding new influences into the home. By analyzing settings of the novel and the personal journals of the …

Borges And New Media: Connections Via Heterotopic Spaces, Sherrin Frances
English Theses - Archive
Borges' short stories such as "The Aleph" and "The Garden of Forking Paths" were uncanny in their foreshadowing of hypertext and internet developments in the 1990's. His work was often credited as inspiration for various projects striving to make use of these "new" technologies in creative ways. These projects include, for example, Stuart Moulthrop's seminal Storyspace work, "Forking Paths," and a MyStory project called, "Borges Fetishization," based on Greg Ulmer's theories of Electracy. The connection between Borges' situations and web-based projects such as these can be further developed through an examination of heterotopic space. The heterotopias found in Borges' work …

Melanoma skin cancer is the most dangerous form of skin cancer and the major cause of deaths related to skin cancer worldwide. Conventional chemotherapeutic treatment is not very effective and faces many problems such as low response rate, development of multidrug resistance, and severe side effects. In order to address these limitations and improve melanoma treatment efficacy, development of a multifunctional nanoparticulate drug delivery system is desired. Thus, we aimed towards the development of magnetic-based core-shell nanoparticles (MBCS NPs) for dual drug release and dual targeting of melanoma tumors. The synthesized nanoparticles were composed of Poly (Lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) particle …

Wettability control of a liquid drop by an external electric field or "electrowet- ting" recently was the subject of special interest among researchers due to its util- ity for a variety of applications. Some of these include "electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD)" based digital microfluidic lab-on-a-chip devices, EWOD lenses and EWOD displays. In these EWOD based devices, water or aqueous electrolytes are used as the liquid medium. However, the use of water or aqueous electrolytes has several limitations and may reduce the efficiency as well as accuracy of these devices. Low thermal stability, evaporation, fouling and fixed phys- iochemical properties are …

Enantiomeric Chromatographic Separations And Ionic Liquids In Gas Chromatography, Ke Huang
Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive
Due to the different therapeutic values of optical isomers, the production of enantiomerically pure drugs is of growing demand in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and agrochemical industries. Today, gas chromatography (GC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) are the most prevalent analytical techniques for the enantiomeric separation of chiral molecules. Although the two techniques can have very different separation mechanisms, they are highly complementary to each other. Together, they can accomplish enantiomeric separations for large numbers of compounds of different functionalities. A great variety of chiral stationary phases (CSPs) have been developed over the years. However, since they are the heart of …
The Effects Of Community Uninsurance On Health Care Quality For The Insured Population, Tuan Anh Nguyen
The Effects Of Community Uninsurance On Health Care Quality For The Insured Population, Tuan Anh Nguyen
Economics Theses - Archive
An important aspect of the ongoing health care reform of 2010 is to provide health coverage to the uninsured, the rising population of which has remained a significant challenge to overcome. Previously, efforts to reduce the number of people without health insurance have been centered on a moral rationale that providing care for the medically indigent was "the right thing" to do. However, recent evidence suggests that it might be in the best interest of people who are already insured to be concerned about the rate of uninsurance in their communities because of a potential negative spillover effect. Using four …

This paper seeks to design food supply chain structures that can provide food security for every person in the world while supporting long-term environmental sustainability. In particular, we provide alternatives to the current food supply chain structure and analyze their potential for providing food security, in terms of productive capacity and long-term environmental sustainability. Given the current world population and expected continued growth, our analysis suggests that environmentally-sustainable food supply chains would be most effectively supported by local and organic agriculture, while maintaining a parallel industrial agricultural system. This hybrid system would adopt environmentally-sustainable principles whenever possible, seeking to increase …

"Who do you say that I am" (Mark 8:29) is the question of Christology. By asking this question, Jesus invites his followers to interpret him from within their own contexts-history, experience, and social location. Therefore, all responses to Jesus's invitation are contextual. But for too long, many theologians particularly in the West have continued to see Christology as a universal endeavor that is devoid of any contextual influences. This understanding of Christology undermines Jesus's expectations from us to imagine and appropriate him from within our own contexts. In Re-imagining African Christologies, Victor I. Ezigbo presents a constructive exposition of the …
