Building Bayesian Network Based Expert Systems From Rules, Saravanan Thirumuruganathan Jan 2010

Building Bayesian Network Based Expert Systems From Rules, Saravanan Thirumuruganathan

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Combining expert knowledge and user explanation with automated reasoning in domains with uncertain information poses significant challenges in terms of representation and reasoning mechanisms. In particular, reasoning structures understandable and usable by humans are often different from the ones for automated reasoning and data mining systems.Rules are a convenient and human understandable way to express domain knowledge and build expert systems. Adding certainty factors to these rules presents one way to deal with uncertainty in rule based expert systems. However such systems have limitations in accurately modeling the domain. Bayesian Network, on the other hand, is a probabilistic graphical model …

Photonic Crystal Cavities For Spectrally-Selective Optoelectronic Devices, Hongjun Yang Jan 2010

Photonic Crystal Cavities For Spectrally-Selective Optoelectronic Devices, Hongjun Yang

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Photonic crystal (PC) structures exhibit unconventional dispersion and refractive properties making possible hitherto not realizable optical and optoelectronic devices with high spectral selectivity. Functional PC devices (e.g., optical filters, reflectors, and photo detectors and light emitters) on both Si and III-V semiconductor material systems were fabricated via E-Beam lithography (EBL). The device layer can be further transferred onto foreign substrates such as glass or plastic (PET), using a low-cost "wet nanomembrane transfer technique" developed in this study. The broadband membrane reflectors (MR) based on Fano resonances in patterned silicon nanomembranes have been demonstrated. Resonance control of the reflectors was realized either …

Embedded Sparse Representation For Image Classification, Jin Huang Jan 2010

Embedded Sparse Representation For Image Classification, Jin Huang

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Image classification, such as face recognition and scene categorization, is an important research area in computer vision over the last decade. It has been successfully applied to many image analysis applications. Images usually have a large number of features, hence the dimensionality reduction methods are often employed before the subsequent classification to improve the classification results. A lot of methods have been proposed, including but not limited to PCA, ICA, LDA, and Bayesian Framework. Recently, compressive sensing and sparse learning have been widely studied and applied into computer vision research. Ma et al. suggested a new method called Sparse Representation …

Evaluation Of Ferry Based Opportunistic Message Dissemination With Deterministic Inter Contact Times, Samreen Tahir Jan 2010

Evaluation Of Ferry Based Opportunistic Message Dissemination With Deterministic Inter Contact Times, Samreen Tahir

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Opportunistic Networks are characterized by intermittent connectivity and volatile topology. In such a network scenario, traditional Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) routing protocols cannot work efficiently. Hence, a novel way of message forwarding is required that operates even when an end-to-end path between a source and destination pair may never exist. Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) are an approach to alleviate network partitioning by working on the `store-carry-forward' paradigm [4]. Opportunistic Networks encompass DTNs and typically involve mobile devices that exchange data by taking advantage of their proximity to other nodes. Nodes in opportunistic networks may be heterogeneous with respect to …

Handling Periodic Signs In American Sign Language Using Synthetic Generation Of Periods, Himanshu Pahwa Jan 2010

Handling Periodic Signs In American Sign Language Using Synthetic Generation Of Periods, Himanshu Pahwa

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

American Sign Language (or ASL) is the dominant sign language of deaf people in United States and parts of Canada. 500,000 to 2 million people use ASL as their primary language in United States. ASL uses hands, face and body, with constantly changing movements and orientations. Since the language is based on gestures, not a printed alphabet, it gets difficult to know the associated meaning given a video. There are multimedia tools and dictionaries available to view a sign video for a given word but there are no dictionaries available which, given a sign video will respond with corresponding word. …

A Human Motion Database: The Cognitive And Parametric Sampling Of Human Motion, Arnab Biswas Jan 2010

A Human Motion Database: The Cognitive And Parametric Sampling Of Human Motion, Arnab Biswas

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Motion databases have a strong potential to guide progress in the field of machine recognition and motion-based animation. Existing databases either have a very loose structure that do not sample the domain according to any controlled methodology or too few action samples which limits their potential to quantitatively evaluate the performance of motion-based techniques. The controlled sampling of the motor domain in the database may lead investigators to identify the fundamental difficulties of motion cognition problems and allow the addressing of these issues in a more objective way. In this thesis, we describe the construction of our Human Motion Database …

Neuro Adaptive Control For Aerospace And Distributed Systems, Abhijit Das Jan 2010

Neuro Adaptive Control For Aerospace And Distributed Systems, Abhijit Das

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Nonlinear and adaptive control is generally considered one of the most effective techniques for stabilizing complex nonlinear systems, where linear control techniques may fail completely. Thousands of research papers are published on either theory or applications of nonlinear and adaptive control. But often one obvious question arises how to implement these techniques in real life model? The best answer that one can think of is to develop simple nonlinear control laws which are easy to implement. Moreover for controlling multi-agent systems, it is often required to distribute the control laws based on limited information available among the agents. This research …

Wavelet Based Array Comparative Genomic Hybridization And Mass Spectrometry Data Analysis, Nha Nguyen Jan 2010

Wavelet Based Array Comparative Genomic Hybridization And Mass Spectrometry Data Analysis, Nha Nguyen

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

As a highly efficient technique, array-based comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) methods allow the simultaneous measurement of genomic DNA copy number at hundreds or thousands of loci and the reliable detection of local one-copy-level variations. The identification of these DNA copy number changes provides insights to facilitate both the basic understanding of cancer and its diagnosis. In order to effectively analyze aCGH data, various techniques have been proposed to help researchers smooth the DNA copy number data and subsequently to quantify the alterations. In this thesis, many wavelet based methods are proposed to smooth and segment the aCGH data that is …

Mimic: An Active Covert Channel That Evades Regularity-Based Detection, Kush Kothari Jan 2010

Mimic: An Active Covert Channel That Evades Regularity-Based Detection, Kush Kothari

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

A covert timing channel is a hidden communication channel based on network timing that an attacker can use to sneak secrets out of a secure system. Active covert channels, in which the attacker uses a program to automatically generate innocuous traffic to use as a medium for embedding the covert channel, are especially problematic, as they allow the attacker to output large amounts of secret data. A promising technique for detecting covert timing channels focuses on using entropy-based tests. This technique can reliably detect known covert timing channels by using a combination of entropy (EN) and conditional entropy (CE) to …

Target Tracking With Lucas-Kanade Optical Flow And Particle Filters Through Affine Transforms And Occlusion, Justin Graham Jan 2010

Target Tracking With Lucas-Kanade Optical Flow And Particle Filters Through Affine Transforms And Occlusion, Justin Graham

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

This paper investigates a hybrid approach derived from Lucas-Kanade optical flow tracking and particle filters that is capable of tracking objects through occlusion and affine transformations. This approach is inspired by aircraft sensor pod infrared and electro-optical tracking applications. For aircraft based sensors, it is important that a tracking system be able to track through rotations as the aircraft orbits a targeting area. It is also of use to handle cases where the target may be momentarily occluded due to other vehicles or obstacles in the area. The main focus of this investigation is to find a technique that performs …

A Framework For Real-Time Fault Detection And Response In Multi-Agent Teams, Matthew B. Middleton Jan 2010

A Framework For Real-Time Fault Detection And Response In Multi-Agent Teams, Matthew B. Middleton

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

This thesis details the creation of a fault detection and response framework that can be applied to mobile multi-agent teams. This framework unites existing concepts of conditioned based maintenance and real-time machine diagnostics with a high-level matrix based discrete event command and control system that can respond to detected mechanical faults in agents in real-time. This allows for automatic corrective actions to be taken when an agent experiences failure if redundant resources are available to replace the failed unit or for the mission planner to be notified that the mission is no longer achievable given the operating conditions of the …

Real Time Hardware And Software Systems For Micro Air Vehicle Flight Control Testing, Christopher Dale Mcmurrough Jan 2010

Real Time Hardware And Software Systems For Micro Air Vehicle Flight Control Testing, Christopher Dale Mcmurrough

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

The trend of increasing capabilities of micro scale electrical, mechanical, and computing systems is opening up the possibilities of new unmanned vehicle platforms. Both unmanned aerial and ground vehicles have traditionally been created from large conventional platforms such as automobiles, rotorcraft, and fixed wing aircraft. These conventional chassis designs are durable and proven, but the benefits of automating these types of platforms are limited by their inherent human-centric design. Many real-world applications would benefit greatly from vehicle classes designed with unconventional means such as biologically inspired locomotion. Micro air vehicles are a class of vehicles that have recently began moving …

Fast Jamming Detection In Wireless Sensor Networks, Kartik Siddhabathula Jan 2010

Fast Jamming Detection In Wireless Sensor Networks, Kartik Siddhabathula

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Non-dedicated medium of communication for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) makes them vulnerable to jamming attack where an adversary injects strong signal or noises to interfere with the transmission and thus block the channel. In applications such as border security, people are particularly interested in the areas where the channel is currently jammed. It is therefore crucial to be able to detect the jamming attacks as fast as possible. Existing studies have shown that the most effective indicator of jamming attacks is the packet delivery ratio (PDR). However, current PDR-based schemes use end-to-end packet delivery ratio, which requires one to observe …

Fast And Energy-Efficient Technique For Jammed Region Mapping In Wireless Sensor Networks, Nabila Rahman Jan 2010

Fast And Energy-Efficient Technique For Jammed Region Mapping In Wireless Sensor Networks, Nabila Rahman

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have great practical importance for surveillance systems to perform monitoring by acquiring and sending information about intrusions into a secured area. Very little human intervention is required for WSNs, which is one of the most desirable features of them and thus making them a cheaper and safer alternative for securing large area such as international borders. Jamming attacks in WSNs can be applied to disrupt communications among the sensor nodes in the network by barring the reception of wireless signals of the sensor nodes' transceivers. Since it is difficult to prevent jamming attacks, detection and mapping …

"There Is Death In The Pot": Women, Consumption, And Free Produce In The Transatlantic World, 1791-1848, Julie Lynn Holcomb Jan 2010

"There Is Death In The Pot": Women, Consumption, And Free Produce In The Transatlantic World, 1791-1848, Julie Lynn Holcomb

History Dissertations - Archive

Abstention from slave-labor products, along with petitioning, was a popular and consistent form of anti-slavery activism for British and American abolitionists, especially women. Despite renewed interest in the British and American free-produce movements, historians continue to focus on either eighteenth- or nineteenth-century British or American abstention, only briefly referring to the transatlantic and generational connections between the movements. Limiting questions about free-produce in this way overemphasizes the connection between abstention and the Society of Friends and privileges the nineteenth-century period of the movement. While Quakers were the primary proponents of abstention from slave-labor products, attempts by both Quakers and non-Quakers …

Dispersion Engineering With Leaky-Mode Resonance Structures, Xin Wang

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

In the thesis, a numerical method for the analysis of optical pulses propagation through leaky-mode/guided-mode resonance (GMR) structures is implemented by integrating a Fourier decomposition technique and the rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) method. Dispersion properties of several GMR structures such as single-grating-layer GMR filters, coupled GMR filters, and cascaded GMR filters are studied and their interaction with optical pulses investigated. For device applications, a high-Q transmission filter is formed by coupling GMR reflection filters which can withstand typical attenuation in silicon. Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) filters are proposed by cascading a number of GMR transmission filters. Generally, a N channel …

Using Shewanella Baltica Ecotypes As A Model For Transcriptional Variation At The Population Level, William Sealy Hambright Jan 2010

Using Shewanella Baltica Ecotypes As A Model For Transcriptional Variation At The Population Level, William Sealy Hambright

Biology Theses - Archive

Eukaryotic studies have shown considerable transcriptional variation among individuals of the same population. Owing to the cost of sequencing entire eukaryotic genomes, tested organisms were assumed to be genomically similar or even identical. We overcame this necessary assumption by using four sequenced strains of the bacterium Shewanella baltica, (OS155, OS185, OS195, OS223), as models to assess transcriptional variation and ecotype formation within a prokaryotic population. The strains were isolated from various depths throughout a water column of the Baltic Sea occupying different ecological niches characterized by various abiotic parameters. Although their genome sequences are strikingly similar, when grown in the …

A Tale Of Three Phytopathogens: Impact Of Transposable Elements On Genome Evolution, Komal Vadnagara Jan 2010

A Tale Of Three Phytopathogens: Impact Of Transposable Elements On Genome Evolution, Komal Vadnagara

Biology Theses - Archive

The genus Phytophthora harbors some notorious plant pathogens like Phytophthora infestans (causal of Irish potato famine), Phytophthora sojae (soybean rot agent), and Phytophthora ramorum (responsible for sudden oak death) that have significant economic, ecological and environmental impact. These phytopathogens exhibit remarkable phenotypic instability and vary tremendously in genome size from 65 Mb (P. ramorum) to 240 Mb (P. infestans). Complete draft genome sequences revealed that a substantial portion of their genome is occupied by highly repetitive DNA. This extreme genome plasticity is due to an infestation of repetitive virus-like genomic parasites called transposable elements (TEs). TEs are sometimes called jumping …

Environmental Regulation Of Stomate-Based Defense Against Bacterial Infection In Arabidopsis, Reejana Chitrakar Jan 2010

Environmental Regulation Of Stomate-Based Defense Against Bacterial Infection In Arabidopsis, Reejana Chitrakar

Biology Theses - Archive

Stomata are natural openings in the plant epidermis responsible for gas (O2 and CO2) exchange between plant interior and environment. They are formed by a pair of guard cells, which are able to close the stomatal pore in response to a number of external factors including light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration, and relative humidity. The stomatal pore is also the main route for pathogen entry into leaves, a crucial step for disease development. Recent studies have unveiled that closure of the pore is effective in preventing bacterial disease in Arabidopsis plants and the successful plant pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato …

Comparing The Genome Expression Profiles Of Verrucomicrobium Sp. Strain Tav2 Cells Grown Under Two Different Oxygen Concentrations, Austin Willis

Biology Theses - Archive

Termites are significantly different in their lifestyles and organization but most are linked by the common trait in degrading plant material, whether it is leaf litter, wood, soil or animal waste. They consume the cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin that make up the plant material but rely on a food web consisting of about 270 different phylotypes of microorganisms to break down the biomass into usable nutrients. Isolated from the hindgut of the termite Reticulitermis flavipes, one such organism is Verrucomicrobium sp. strain TAV2. Members of this relatively new bacterium phylum have rigid peptidoglycan with some possessing prosthecae. They have been …

In order to accomplish this, R2 RNA and protein substrates …

Insights Into The Transmission Of Helitrons And Their Impact On The Genome Architecture Of Myotis Lucifugus, The Little Brown Bat, Jainy Thomas Jan 2010

Insights Into The Transmission Of Helitrons And Their Impact On The Genome Architecture Of Myotis Lucifugus, The Little Brown Bat, Jainy Thomas

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Probably the most dynamic proportion of multicellular eukaryotic genomes is composed of teeming populations of parasitic mobile DNA, called transposable elements (TEs). Helitrons are rolling circle TEs that have a limited distribution among mammals, having been identified only in the genome of the little brown bat, Myotis lucifugus, and a few closely related species. One family of Helitrons, called Helibat, was estimated to make up as much as 3% of the M. lucifugus genome. In addition, Helibat was shown to have captured and amplified the promoter and 5' UTR of a highly conserved single copy gene to >1000 copies. Together …
