Sponges of the major class, Calcarea can be found in nearly all marine habitats. Two Calcarea genera, Leucetta and Clathrina have found be rich with 2-aminoimidazole alkaloids. The first alkaloid of these groups was isolated in 1987 from a bright yellow sponge of the class Calcispongiae (calcarea) and Leucetta chagosensis dendy (Leucetta) collected near Na'ama in the Gulf of Eilat (Aqaba) in the Red Sea. The nomenclature for this whole series of compounds is based on the location of the initial source material. The first Chapter describes the isolation, biological activities, possible biosyntheses and total synthesis of these alkaloids. The …

Reinforcement Learning Based Strategies For Adaptive Wireless Sensor Network Management, Kunalbhai Shah

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

In wireless sensor networks (WSN), resource-constrained nodes are expected to operate in highly dynamic and often unattended environments. WSN applications need to cope with such dynamicity and uncertainty intrinsic in sensor networks, while simultaneously trying to achieve efficient resource utilization. A middleware framework with support for autonomous, adaptive and distributed sensor management, can simplify development of such WSN applications. We present a reinforcement learning based WSN middleware framework to enable autonomous and adaptive applications with support for efficient resource management. The uniqueness of our framework lies in using a bottom-up approach where each sensor node is responsible for its resource …

Development Of An Optical Fiber-Based Corrosion Detection Sensor Based On Laser Light Reflection, Manjunatha Shenoy Jan 2010

Development Of An Optical Fiber-Based Corrosion Detection Sensor Based On Laser Light Reflection, Manjunatha Shenoy

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Corrosion plays a detrimental effect on the structural integrity of many engineering structures. It can compromise the safe operation of these structures by forming corrosion pits that deteriorates the structural surfaces and causes stress concentrations. Therefore, it is critical that corrosions are detected before structural integrity is compromised and repair becomes economically prohibitive. However, corrosions usually occur at intricate places that are hard to inspect visually. Manual inspection of the structures for corrosions requires dismantling the structures, which incurs high maintenance costs and could potentially cause damage to the components. One approach to reduce this cost is to detect and …

In a perfect world, neo-classical economics and rational theory make sense. But in this imperfect world this paper has turned to Oliver Williamson and his understanding of New Institutional Economics to help us make sense. NIE helps explain institutions and organizations and their role in creating and shaping contracts that fit a very diverse institutional, organizational and human landscape. NIE provides a new lens to examine institutions as diverse as politics and as rigid as economics. Yet, one critical institution has yet to be examined through that lens. That institution is Public Education. It is that examination which this paper …

Air foil bearings (AFB's) are widely used in small to midsized turbomachinery. They provide safer, cleaner and cheaper bearing operation. They are simple in construction, offer very low drag friction and have very high reliability at high speed operations. A major advantage of air foil bearings compared to conventional rigid surface bearings is their superior dynamic performance in rotor bearing systems. Since there is no contact between the rotor and bearing surface, the air foil bearings have a higher service life compared to rigid surface bearings. Hybrid AFB's operate under both hydrodynamic and hydrostatic condition. The present study is a …

Evaluation Of Trenchless Renewal Methods For Potable Water Distribution Pipes, Abhay A. Jain Jan 2010

Evaluation Of Trenchless Renewal Methods For Potable Water Distribution Pipes, Abhay A. Jain

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Undoubtedly, potable water pipes, as part of an underground infrastructure system, play a key role in maintaining quality of life, health and well being of human kind. As these potable water pipes reach the end of their useful life, they create high maintenance costs, loss of flow capacity, decreased water quality, and increased dissatisfaction. Trenchless renewal methods (TRMs) are a medium to renew deteriorated potable water pipes, thus decreasing leakage loss, emergency maintenance costs and customer complaints. TRMs also maintain the quality of the water leaving the treatment plant. America's drinking water systems faces an annual shortfall of at least …

A Study On The Corrosion Behavior Of Nanocrystalline Nickel In Aqueous Environments, Anjana Shyam Sundar Jan 2010

A Study On The Corrosion Behavior Of Nanocrystalline Nickel In Aqueous Environments, Anjana Shyam Sundar

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Nanocrystalline materials possess considerably enhanced properties arising from their small grain size. Significant interest has been paid in the past to their mechanical and physical properties. Very little attention has been attracted by their electrochemical behavior, which is expected to be affected by the significant volume fraction of grain boundaries. In the present study, corrosion experiments were conducted in nanocrystalline nickel in two entirely different solutions in order to obtain a better understanding of its corrosion behavior. This is of particular interest to MEMS and NEMS devices where electroplated nanocrystalline nickel is the metal of choice. The corrosion behavior of …

Determinants Of Implied Volatility Movements In Individual Equity Options, Christopher G. Angelo Jan 2010

Determinants Of Implied Volatility Movements In Individual Equity Options, Christopher G. Angelo

Finance and Real Estate Dissertations - Archive

In this study, I introduce a parsimonious model that explains implied volatility time series for individual stock options. The current state of risk management for individual equity options still seems to lack the presence of pertinent exogenous variables. This study suggests a few easily observable variables that can be used to explain the changes in implied volatilities of stock options. These variables can be used in the risk models in order to more accurately manage option positions for individual stocks. The first chapter provides a motivation for the VIX as the primary explanatory variable for changes in implied volatility. It …

Sacred Sites As Hotspots For Biodiversity: The Three Sisters Cave Complex In Coastal Kenya, Kristian Metcalfe, Richard Ffrench-Constant, Ian Gordon Jan 2010

Sacred Sites As Hotspots For Biodiversity: The Three Sisters Cave Complex In Coastal Kenya, Kristian Metcalfe, Richard Ffrench-Constant, Ian Gordon

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Sacred sites, particularly in forests, often form unofficial protected areas because their biodiversity is preserved and protected by the local people looking after the sites. Here, we survey the biodiversity of the Three Sisters Cave complex, a sacred site or kaya in a fragment of East African coastal forest in south-east Kenya. We show that, despite the tiny size of this non-gazetted forest reserve, it contains many of the threatened species of both flora (121 species) and fauna (46 species) representative of Kenya's coastal forest. Following the overexploitation and widespread destruction of coastal rainforests in Kenya, such sacred sites represent …

Nestmate Recognition And The Role Of Cuticular Hydrocarbons In The African Termite Raiding Ant Pachycondyla Analis, Abdullahi A. Yusuf, Christian W.W. Pirk, Robin M. Crewe, Peter G.N. Njagi, Ian Gordon, Baldwyn Torto Jan 2010

Nestmate Recognition And The Role Of Cuticular Hydrocarbons In The African Termite Raiding Ant Pachycondyla Analis, Abdullahi A. Yusuf, Christian W.W. Pirk, Robin M. Crewe, Peter G.N. Njagi, Ian Gordon, Baldwyn Torto

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) are used for chemical communication among nestmates in many ant species, and they may play a role in the discrimination of nestmates and non-nestmates. Using the mandible opening response (MOR) bioassay, we tested the response of the African termite raiding ant, Pachycondyla analis, to CHC extracts of nestmates and non-nestmates. The ants were able to distinguish control chemical cues, from nestmate CHCs, and from non-nestmate CHCs, and, based on a CHC recognition threshold, aggression was demonstrated toward non-nestmates. Gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectrometric analyses showed that CHC components of different ant colonies had chain lengths ranging …
