Evaluating the impact of weight exerted by settled snow (i.e., snow load) on structures poses numerous statistical challenges, including missing data, biased distribution parameters, and the influence of climate change. This dissertation aims to address challenges related to the use both direct and indirect measurements of snow load (or equivalently, snow water equivalent), as well as the anticipated impact of climate change on future extreme snow loads. The first paper within this dissertation investigates short-term snow loads by comparing various techniques for estimating extreme values of short-term snow accumulations. Additionally, the first paper includes a comparative analysis of short-term and …

Serious flooding can happen when rain falls on snow, which we call a rain-on-snow (ROS) event. Increasing our understanding of the behavior of floods resulting from ROS events can help us design better systems to manage flood water and prevent it from causing damage. This thesis explores how ROS events affect streamflow in the Western United States by examining the weather conditions that precede a streamflow surge. We classify stream surges as ROS or non-ROS induced based on these weather conditions, which helps us separate floods caused by ROS events from those caused by other factors. By comparing these different …

Active revegetation is often necessary to recover native plant communities in disturbed or degraded wetlands. However, active revegetation has been pursued less in wetlands than other ecosystems and thus, there are few established best practices to guide implementation. Additionally, wetland revegetation is challenging due to dynamic hydrology becoming more extreme and high invasive plant propagule pressure that can limit native plant recruitment and favor invasive plant dominance. In this study, we tested the efficacy of varied revegetation approaches on native plant reassembly and invasion resistance in semi-arid wetlands subject to seasonal hydrologic fluctuations. In a Great Salt Lake wetland in …

As a hallmark of N2 sleep stage, sleep spindle detection based on electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings plays a crucial role in analyzing sleep. Hence, how to effectively automatically detect sleep spindle is crucially important. However, many automatic detection methods assume that the signal is stationary, which is inconsistent with the observation that spindle signals have a significant change in amplitude. Thus, some important non-stationary information and the presented evident dynamic characteristics has been ignored. To overcome the aforementioned shortcoming, we propose a novel methodology based on Teager Energy Operator (TEO) and Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) to determine the exact location of …

Spinal cord transcutaneous stimulation (scTS) offers a promising approach to enhance cardiovascular regulation in individuals with a high-level spinal cord injury (SCI), addressing the challenges of unstable blood pressure (BP) and the accompanying hypo- and hypertensive events. While scTS offers flexibility in stimulation locations, it also leads to significant variability and lack of validation in stimulation sites utilized by studies. Our study presents findings from a case series involving eight individuals with chronic cervical SCI, examining the hemodynamic effects of scTS applied in different vertebral locations, spanning from high cervical to sacral regions. Stimulation of the lumbosacral vertebrae region (L1/2, …

Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1/Serpin E1) is classically known for its antifibrinolytic activity via inhibiting uPA and tPA of the fibrinolytic pathway. PAI-1 has a paradoxical role in tumor progression, and its molecular functions are poorly understood. PAI-1 is a widely accepted secretory protease inhibitor, however, a study suggested the localization of PAI-1 in the cytoplasm and the nucleus. Besides the plethora of its biological functions as a secretory protein, intracellular localization, and functions of PAI-1 remain unexplored at the molecular level. In this study, using various in silico approaches, we showed that PAI-1 possesses a nuclear export signal. Using the …

Improving photovoltaic systems to better withstand variations in temperature and irradiance, lessen steady-state ripples, maintain high efficiency, require less tracking time, and have minimal complexity is becoming increasingly important. The PV array's overall power output is negatively impacted by partial shading because the shaded cells produce less power and consume less power overall, which lowers efficiency and creates localized hotspots. Although bypass diodes may be used to counteract these impacts by rerouting current around cells that are shaded, they can result in several peaks, which complicates maximum power point tracking (MPPT). To manage several peaks and optimize power output, metaheuristic …

Fault detection is vital in chemical engineering systems to maintain operational efficiency, product quality, and safety through timely identification and correction of deviations from expected behavior. Although partial least squares (PLS) has proven effective in monitoring due to its ability to handle highly correlated variables, traditional detection metrics of PLS may fail to identify small abnormal changes as they rely solely on recent observations. This paper integrates PLS modeling framework with Hellinger Distance (HD)-based fault detection index to overcome the limitations of conventional detection metrics. The utilization of HD is motivated by its sensitivity to quantifying any dissimilarity between distributions, …

Automotive turbochargers, essential for enhancing intake air pressure and boosting torque in internal combustion engines, operate at exceptionally high rotational speeds of approximately 100,000 to 300,000 rpm. Despite the implementation of dual or triple air filtration systems to filter contaminants, neglected maintenance can lead to clogged filters, resulting in the ingestion of metallic filter mesh, and other small-sized objects from filter indicators, washers, and plastic components into the turbocharger assembly. The current study explores the impact of foreign particles on the mechanics of turbocompressor impeller blades in automotive turbochargers through a computational approach. A finite element model of the turbocompressor …
