Questions & Rationale: This session will present an inquiry into student learning as measured by reading compliance and quiz scores. Students’ reading compliance has declined substantially over the past 30 years from over 80% to less than 20% (Burchfield & Sappington, 2000). Even in textbook-reliant introductory courses, students read less than 1/3 of the assigned pages (Gurung & Martin, 2011), and reading compliance significantly predicts exam scores and final grades (Sappington et al., 2002). Students who have not completed the readings are unprepared for class activities based on that material, which makes it difficult for instructors to move beyond content-delivery …

Background Trafficking in the African context is still very complex, multidimensional, multisectoral, illicit industry affecting both individuals and nations across Africa. In addition to being an issue of international and criminal law, trafficking affects human rights, labour, migration, public health, socio-economic development and morality. In recent years, South Africa has undertaken the formulation of Trafficking in Persons legislation.

Despite the evidence that trafficking affects most countries in the world and is a growing illicit industry with devastating impacts, very few African countries have policy related to human trafficking.

South African government and UN support- signatories to the United Nations Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking Persons, especially Women and Children (2000 & 2004). Yet there was no legislature that directly addressed human trafficking in South Africa.

South Africa needed to align its domestic law with international law and have a legal framework that directly addressed human trafficking. In 2009 Prevention and Combating of Trafficking in Persons Bill would seek to prosecute culprits to prevent trafficking.

Rationale behind this was to address inadequacies in the South African common law and statutory law of trafficking in persons adequately. The …

OBJECTIVE: To determine if new, strategic partnerships can be initiated between The Texas Medical Center Library (The TMC Library), Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston (UTHSC-H).

METHODS: Cohort study

The TMC Library joined a 22-member cohort of academic and research libraries to participate in the DuraSpace/ARL/DLF 2012 E-Science Institute, to discover new methods of supporting computational scientific research. The prevailing wisdom in the film and video production industries is that audio information outweighs visual information when it comes to spectator responses, but there are few empirical studies to support this claim. In previous research, four critical characteristics of sound have been identified: (1) Music, (2) visual/sound contradictions (defined as sound that is inconsistent with audience expectations based on visual information), (3) multi-channel sound, and (4) sound quality. This poster reports on the results of a content analysis project in which transcripts of interviews with professors in seven disciplines. The faculty members were interviewed about the data education needs of their students. The results indicate that generally faculty members feel that graduate students are unprepared to manage data when the enter graduate education. Many faculty are under the impression that students had previously received training on data management topics but were still lacking in skills.

We present visual modeling solutions for testing simple and more advanced statistical hypotheses in any research field. All models can be directly specified in analytical software like Mplus or R.

Data analysis in any substantive field can be easily accomplished by translating statistical tests in the intuitive language of regression-based path diagrams with observed and unobserved variables. All models we presented can be directly specified and estimated in analytical software.

This presentation will discuss the class assignment’s design, which the English faculty member and librarian co-authored, plus the various publishing concerns and problems that the class raised, what changes we might make in the future, as well as ask broader questions about how making the undergraduate student a publisher could drastically reframe scholarly communication instruction.

This study focuses on 256 MLB free agent hitters playing under the 2006-2011 CBA to determine whether they boost their offensive performance in their contract year. Prior studies’ results are mixed, depending on the econometric technique used and the choice of the offensive performance measure.

Having multiple year observations per player, one can incorporate the unobserved traits of the players (ability, risk aversion, work ethic, etc.) by using Fixed Effects (FE) estimation. Since these unmeasured player traits are likely to be correlated with observed predictors of performance (games played, playoff contention, age, etc.), traditionally used Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and …

The Santa Monica Mountains of southern California are located in a Mediterranean-type climate region which experiences reoccurring wildfires due to summer drought and Santa Ana winds. Chaparral vegetation, which consists mostly of evergreen, sclerophyllous shrubs, dominates the landscape. Species of chaparral shrubs have evolved three different life history types in response to fire – those that sprout after fire but do not germinate seeds (obligate sprouters = OS), those that do not sprout after fire but reestablish by seed germination (non-sprouters = NS), and those that both sprout and germinate seeds after fire (facultative sprouters = FS). Reference and instruction librarians increasingly face the challenge of transforming traditional face-to-face library instruction to the digital environment in order to reach larger groups of users. This research report outlines the results of a multidisciplinary review of the literature concerning “best practices” in the design of information literacy tutorials. Literature was searched in the fields of library science, instructional design, web design and development, and human computer interaction to create two sets of design considerations and “best practices” for the creation of information literacy tutorials.

A Closer Look At 'Incluso' And 'Excepto', Amy S. Orf

Faculty Works

In presenting prepositional pronouns, many Spanish textbooks include incluso and excepto in a list of exceptions that are used with the subject pronouns yo and tú, instead of mí and ti. While it is true that incluso and excepto do not directly precede mí and ti, it is not true that they always require the subject pronouns yo and tú. I argue that pronoun use with incluso and excepto is more complicated than indicated in textbooks and that it actually varies according to the context of the sentence.
