The Challenges Of Faculty-Led Study Abroad In Cuba, Amy S. Orf

Recent changes in U.S. travel regulations now allow for short-term study abroad in Cuba. However, planning and leading Faculty-Led Study Abroad programs in Cuba present certain challenges not encountered in other programs. In this presentation I discuss current U.S. regulations regarding educational travel to Cuba, as well as the particular challenges that I faced in leading two successful Faculty-Led Study Abroad programs in Cuba, including recruiting, budget and finances, travel arrangements, on-site logistics, and safety.

In the field of community interpreting, where interpreters’ role boundaries and positions are so diffused, interpreters are constantly struggling to position themselves as multi-cultural agents within public institutions. This paper focuses on a NGO of healthcare interpreters in southern Spain, composed mainly of foreign residents, which has shaped the structures of this field for over 25 years working at two hospitals. Their contribution has overshadowed the work of other healthcare interpreters in the area and provided them with a large volume of social capital—public recognition and awards, and symbolic capital—autonomy to shape their practice. Active Learning In The Library: Stewarding Funds And Cutting Cables, Ryan Ingersoll

I share about my experience converting a traditional computer lab in the library to an active learning space. During summer 2012, the Seattle Pacific University Library staff proposed, planned, and implemented the conversion of a traditional lab space with 22 desktop computers into an active learning classroom. We equipped the room with mobile furniture, a wireless interactive, short-throw projector with digital pens, a new MacBook Pro checkout system, and put a fresh coat of paint on the walls. Partnering with librarians, Facilities, and Instructional Technology Services, the project came together just before the new academic school year.

The open access movement has been going strong for over a decade. Large research universities tend to have the oldest and most active programs. Their work is inspiring, but it can be challenging for librarians at smaller institutions to identify ways to contribute to the movement.

While attending a Women’s Pipeline for Change event in Boston during the summer of 2011, Gladys was inspired by the large number of women of color who came out to support other women of color in politics. This prompted her to document and analyze the resources that exist and are utilized by women of color, especially Latinas, running for elected office in Western Massachusetts.

Women of color are underrepresented in political office at multiple levels of government, from school committees to governorships nationwide. Yet many women of color who are well-known and respected in their communities do not seek elective office.

While the ranks of women serving in public office and other political leadership positions are growing, women of color continue to represent a relatively small proportion of elected and other public officials in the United States. Sheneal centered her study on civically engaged mothers of color given that there is limited scholarship available on women of color who are mothers and politically active in their communities. Sheneal wanted to deepen our understanding of the barriers mothers of color face in entering and sustaining a political career.

GSWS 422 “History of Sexuality” has been offered for four years in the online summer program at the University of Pennsylvania. The instructor leads advanced undergraduate and graduate students through a highly interactive seminar class in which they learn how to analyze critically works in the history of sexuality, exploring sexual identities, roles and norms from Ancient Greece and Rome, to the United States in the 21^st century. Extracorporeal life support has advanced from its humble beginnings over 3 decades ago, with the first description of its success in a patient with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), going as far back as 1971. The indications for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy include refractory respiratory and/or cardiac failure, and ECMO is now being increasingly used in adult patients. In this case report, we present a patient who had traveled from India to the United States, where she developed acute decompensated biventricular failure and shock, requiring ECMO placement as a bridge to a decision. In early 2012, a Usability Working Group (UWG) at the Binghamton University Libraries began conducting usability testing on the interface of its new discovery system, ExLibris’ Primo. To thoroughly test Primo, two approaches were developed: a heuristics study for library staff and a usability study for library library patrons.

Heuristic studies are an established means of usability testing but are generally underutilized in libraries. Heuristic studies are designed to identify usability problems with an interface. The studies are typically performed by a small set of evaluators (usually experts familiar with the system) who examine the interface, aided by a set …

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence variation is increasingly recognized to influence the penetrance of complex diseases and climatic adaptation in mammals, although little is known about its influence on invertebrate species’ adaptation to unique geographic niches. We investigated whether natural variation in mtDNA-encoded respiratory chain subunits alters the inherent mitochondrial energy capacity of wild C. elegans isolates to match local environmental energy demands. We found that relative to the classic N2 Bristol (England) wild-type strain, CB4856 wild isolates from a warmer and more equatorial native climate (Hawaii) had a unique A12S amino acid substitution in the N-terminal string of the COX-1 …

With the goal of combining my passion and pursuit of a dental career with public health, I joined the medical team and assisted in treatment of over 1000 Q’eqchi’ locals for a variety of conditions such as scabies, stomach ailments, asthma, arthritis, and parasites. I assisted professionals in the oral surgery procedures including multiple extractions and cleft palate cases. Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) is primarily known today as a central British modernist novelist. In addition, she was also an important theorist of power, subjectivity, and ethics, especially as she turned her attention in the 1930s--as fascism spread and intensified across Europe--toward the public sphere in which European women were still then more or less without (easy) access. I read her late novels and essays alongside her diary in order to excavate the theoretical/political/ethical premises of her thought. I contend that she shares with the late thought of French philosopher Michel Foucault (1926-1984) an original conception of ethics. Woolf and Foucault’s …

In light of China’s recent reemergence as a global superpower, it is becoming increasingly important for westerners to understand its history and culture. For current college students, the culture of China’s youth is particularly pertinent.

In this project, a course, HPR 107: Chinese Youth Culture, was designed and taught through the Students-Teaching-Students program, which provides senior Honor’s Program students the opportunity to design and teach their own Honor’s Program course. The HPR 107 course focuses on China’s 80后 and 90后 generations, those born in the 1980s and 1990s, respectively.

Brown Algal Diversity In Bermuda Revealed Using Molecular Tools, Alyssa L. Rogers

For nearly 60 years there has been very little investigation of the marine algal flora in Bermuda, which is an ideal location for a biodiversity assessment due to its size and location. Residing approximately 1000km off the coast of North Carolina, Bermuda is influenced by the cool water from the north during winter and by the warm water eddies that spin off the Gulf Stream for the much of the other seasons. The Bermuda Seaweed Project aims to extensively survey the marine algal flora in Bermuda and generate morphological and molecular data for all three major groups of macroalgae present. …
