Gene Annotation Of Heterochromatic Dna Across Drosophila Species, Karolina Senkow Apr 2020

Gene Annotation Of Heterochromatic Dna Across Drosophila Species, Karolina Senkow

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Regulation at the level of gene transcription is a critical way to regulate the production of proteins. Genes present in a euchromatic environment exhibit much more expression than genes present in a heterochromatic DNA structure. This project investigated what causes genes to be expressed despite existing in a heterochromatic environment. The fourth chromosome of the Drosophila species appears entirely heterochromatic, but has a similar proportion of active genes to that of its other euchromatic chromosomes. I annotated the coding spans and transcriptional start sites across the genes on the euchromatic 3L chromosome of Drosophila takahashii in order to allow for …

Internship Experience At The Pediatric Developmental Center, Tiffany Cervencik Apr 2020

Internship Experience At The Pediatric Developmental Center, Tiffany Cervencik

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

My presentation gives insight into what I did at the Pediatric Developmental Center and how I grew on a developmental and personal level. In addition, it gives insight into the different disabilities by listening the signs, symptoms, and treatments options for children who have the disorder. I made a brochure for my site that would benefit families because they came into the site being unaware of a certain disorder and if their child fell under that disorder. My presentation not only benefits families at the site, but those who are unaware of the disorders seen in children.

Comparing And Contrasting Language Education In American And Polish Schools, Monika Czopek

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

This presentation consists of detailed research that expresses the importance of bilingual and dual language education. Students who speak a first language other than English should be given the opportunity to develop both languages, rather than allowing English to dominate. It is important to bring awareness to the significance of bilingual education and make a change in our current from of Education to better value bilingualism.

Overexpression Of Ribbon Disrupts Gonad Development And Gametogenesis In D. Melanogaster, Pauline Sulit Apr 2020

Overexpression Of Ribbon Disrupts Gonad Development And Gametogenesis In D. Melanogaster, Pauline Sulit

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

During development, cells of different types migrate to form organs with the proper structure and function. In Drosophila melanogaster, the embryonic gonad is formed when primordial germ cells (PGCs) and somatic gonadal precursor cells (SGPs) migrate and coalesce. In previous work, the transcription factor ribbon (rib) was identified as a key regulator of embryonic gonad development. However, we have observed that Ribbon continues to be expressed in later stages of gonad development, and in the adult ovaries and testes. These results suggest that Rib may regulate morphological changes that occur during larval gonad development, as well as gametogenesis in the …

Testing A New Protocol For Extracting Microbial Dna From Urine Samples, John Michael Van Dusen Apr 2020

Testing A New Protocol For Extracting Microbial Dna From Urine Samples, John Michael Van Dusen

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

The urinary microbiome is one of the least studied sites in humans. In order to study and characterize its inhabitants, new techniques for specimen isolation and DNA extraction must be developed. Here, a new protocol is proposed that is designed to collect both bacteria and viruses from the same urine sample. This removes the need for dedicated concentration and amplification steps, saving time and money. It also allows for a more complete catalogue of a sample's inhabitants. DNA extraction and Viral concentration efficiency were tested using bacteriophages obtained from our lab, combined with lab strains of Streptococcus and E. coli …

Anatomical Model Of The Human Eye, Leanna Greeenlee Apr 2020

Anatomical Model Of The Human Eye, Leanna Greeenlee

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Freshman engineering students were approached by Dr. Kostovich, head of the Loyola nursing department, to try and build a lifelike, 3D model for the nursing students. The model would have a detachable eye, nose, and ear that the nurses would use to practice administering medication.

Our group was tasked with creating a practical eye model in SolidWorks that could hold liquid and be easily emptied by students when the labs were finished. It also had to be as lifelike as possible to prepare the students for real experiences in the field.

Molecular Docking And Synthesis Of Gnat Pa3944 Substrates And Inhibitors, Xhulio Arolli Apr 2020

Molecular Docking And Synthesis Of Gnat Pa3944 Substrates And Inhibitors, Xhulio Arolli

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Gcn5-Related N-acetyltransferase enzymes (GNATs) are part of a superfamily of enzymes that participate in acyl-transfer reactions and play a key role in a wide variety of biological processes including histone modification, protein acetylation, xenobiotic metabolism, and other cellular processes. The acyl group transfer ability of these enzymes gives them important roles in metabolic and cellular processes, gene regulation, transcription, detoxification, drug resistance, and post-translational protein modifications. In addition, they play a role in aminoglycoside antibiotic resistance, and thus inhibitors may provide an avenue to combat resistant bacteria. We have studied the docking and synthesis of alternate substrates for Gcn5-Related N-acetyltransferases …

Gender, Acculturation, And Ethnic Identity In Mexican Families: A Closer Look At Immigration And Identity, Lauren Tan Apr 2020

Gender, Acculturation, And Ethnic Identity In Mexican Families: A Closer Look At Immigration And Identity, Lauren Tan

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Acculturation is a multidimensional construct in which immigrants actively decide to reduce or maintain their cultural identity, both of their home culture and their new culture (Padilla & Perez, 2003). Though mixed in research, acculturation is often identified as a risk factor (Padilla & Perez, 2003). For example, higher acculturation in Mexican-origin mothers is associated with increased depressive symptoms (Calzada & Sales, 2019). However, studies have shown that parental acculturation and child ethnic identity formation are also associated (Costigan & Dokis, 2006). Children’s ethnic identity can promote positive development and self-esteem (Smith & Silva, 2011). Little research has examined acculturation …

Impact Of Acculturation Gap Stress On Latino Adolescents In The U.S., Maria Camila Afanador Ardila Apr 2020

Impact Of Acculturation Gap Stress On Latino Adolescents In The U.S., Maria Camila Afanador Ardila

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Latinos represent a significant number of the U.S. population, where they are expected to comprise 30% of the U.S. by 2050 (Umaña-Taylor et al., 2013). Research has demonstrated that adolescents with Latino immigrant parents are at higher risk of experiencing mood disorders in comparison to adolescents with U.S.-born parents (Aldridge & Roesch, 2008; Breslau, Borges, Hagar, Tancredi & Gilman, 2009; Hill & Torres, 2010). Furthermore, adolescence is a critical phase of development in which stress levels are higher (Steinberg, 2014); therefore, it is important to look at the impact of stress on adolescents’ lives, especially of acculturation gap stress, which …

Examining Perspectives On Lgbt+ Mentoring For College Students, Vincent Sarna Apr 2020

Examining Perspectives On Lgbt+ Mentoring For College Students, Vincent Sarna

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Members of the broader lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community (LGBT+) are sometimes at heightened risk for a variety of health and mental health challenges. Due to unsupportive environments and the current political climate, it is imperative that the LGBT+ community be further studied so that LGBT+ youth, specifically, can be better supported through this. An online survey was conducted within one a medium-sized midwestern university to assess demographic characteristics, experiences with discrimination, and perceptions of beneficial components of future mentoring programs. 289 LGBT+ undergraduate students predominately represent a sample of cisgender female students (65.7%), ages 19-20 (47.8%), bisexual (51.2%), freshman …

Lifting Teams In The Acute Care Settings, Mary Makalyn Smith Apr 2020

Lifting Teams In The Acute Care Settings, Mary Makalyn Smith

Scholars Week

Research studies have analyzed the importance of lifting teams in the acute care settings of the hospital. Lifting teams provide nurses with the trained assistance they need to refrain from reoccurring musculoskeletal injuries. These lift team members are scheduled and trained staff members who are able to focus on patients’ needs and modes of transportation. The focus of these lift teams would be to add efficiency to the healthcare system and increase patient skin integrity and satisfaction rates. In my first study it examined the effectiveness of a multifaceted minimal-lifting environment on nursing areas. The study was focused on musculoskeletal …

Integrating Autism-Specific Care Plans For Pediatrics: Increasing Satisfaction, Madison S. Vandiver Apr 2020

Integrating Autism-Specific Care Plans For Pediatrics: Increasing Satisfaction, Madison S. Vandiver

Scholars Week

Abstract

Recent studies have explored the importance on integrating Autism-Specific Care Plans (ACP) into practice. These care plans provide patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or their caregivers the opportunity to identify individualized needs that are imperative for healthcare providers to provide personalized care and accommodations. These ACPs identify baseline characteristics, behavior patterns, communication techniques and management strategies for the patient with ASD during hospitalization. The focus of the ACP is to recognize patient needs and make those available to those providing care. Understanding the patient’s normal behavior variations can alert providers to a problems or stressors of the patient …
