Quantification Of Vitamin B12 In Two Cricket Species, Haley Smeltz Apr 2020

Quantification Of Vitamin B12 In Two Cricket Species, Haley Smeltz

Student Scholar Showcase

Entomophagy, or the eating of insects, has been practiced in the eastern world for centuries, however it is currently overlooked in the western nations. Studies have shown that insects, such as crickets, contain high levels of protein and minerals, however vitamin content is rarely studied. This study aims to quantify the vitamin B12 content in two cricket species, the common house cricket (Acheta domesticus) and the banded cricket (Gryllodes sigillatus). The vitamin B12 content of both cricket species will be quantified using reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). Prior to RP-HPLC analysis, all the …

Defining Stress Among Oregon Corrections Professionals, Jessica T. Ballin Apr 2020

Defining Stress Among Oregon Corrections Professionals, Jessica T. Ballin

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Annual Conference

Corrections professionals experience some of the highest levels of chronic stress compared to other occupations. This leads to poor mental and physical health, increased mortality, negative job performance, and increased economic costs, such as work-related injuries, sick leave, worker’s compensation claims and disability. Improving health and safety among this occupation requires identifying the factors contributing to stress and the associated economic impact. We assessed corrections professionals (n=296) working at six different Oregon Department of Corrections facilities near the Portland-area of varying security levels. Participants completed a cross-sectional survey, including demographics, work history and validated stress and occupational constructs. The outcome …

National Death Rates From Firearms Due To Legal Intervention For Native Americans, Hanrui Huang Apr 2020

National Death Rates From Firearms Due To Legal Intervention For Native Americans, Hanrui Huang

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Annual Conference

According to the CDC, deaths from legal intervention are defined as deaths caused by injuries inflicted by law enforcement officers. Although some studies have examined high rates of fatal legal intervention shootings among African Americans, rates for Native Americans have not been adequately examined, despite similar racial biases and stereotypes. This study aims to examine national data and examine the association of fatal legal intervention shootings and Native communities.

The available data provided on legal intervention (CDC) was studied to understand death rates for different races. The data was then analyzed to examine changes over time between 2008 and 2018. …

Field Relations, Geochemistry, And Geochronology Of The Rocks At Perkins Point, Castine, Maine, Robert Knowles, Douglas Reusch Apr 2020

Field Relations, Geochemistry, And Geochronology Of The Rocks At Perkins Point, Castine, Maine, Robert Knowles, Douglas Reusch

Individual Projects

Northwest of Castine, Maine is the coastline known as Perkins Point, which is home to about 500 meters of bedrock exposure. Previous mapping projects of Penobscot Bay indicate a discrepancy in rock type for this area, and therefore the origin of the rocks is unclear. Preliminary observations suggest that these rocks are mostly volcanic. The goal of this project is to determine the field relations, geochronology, and geochemistry to conclude the true nature of these rocks and ultimately create a geological map.

Key locks work when a key made with teeth is placed into a cylinder with a series of pins and tumblers. If you don’t insert the right key one or more of the pins will remain in the way, preventing the key from turning and the lock will remain closed. According to the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, tens of …

Rhetoric and International Human Rights: The Case of the Senegalese Talibés

Sponsor: Lynne Derbyshire (Communication Studies, Honors Program)

While in Senegal, I witnessed the hurdles faced by proponents of international human rights standards. Thousands of Muslim boys, called talibés, undertake their Koranic education in Senegal. Many are forced to beg in the streets by their educators, and abuse in the schools is common. Still, this education is considered a valuable part of the boys’ spiritual development. Despite the multitude of countries that have openly supported and ratified international human rights compacts, many …

Adhd And Its Effects On Young Minority College Adults, Aizana Hunt Apr 2020

Adhd And Its Effects On Young Minority College Adults, Aizana Hunt

2020 Undergraduate Presentations

Ever since ADHD was first discovered, it has been a hindrance and a psychological monster to people who have been negatively impacted, and they must find ways to look at things in a different manner. I want to know the history and the background of when ADHD was first discovered and when the term was originated. Also, understanding how the disability occurs and being able to figure out why it is more prevalent in boys than in girls may also help immensely. I also want to explore why ADHD occurs more frequently in lower income families of color. Being able …

P190rhogap May Be Required To Regulate Eye Size In Zebrafish, Jessica Pollart Apr 2020

P190rhogap May Be Required To Regulate Eye Size In Zebrafish, Jessica Pollart

2020 Undergraduate Presentations

During eye development the retina protrudes from the brain subsequently surrounding the invaginating lens. During this process a transient cavity initiates, the choroid fissure (CF). Closure of the CF initiates in the central CF and proceeds toward the distal and proximal CF locations. If the CF does not close completely the eye is at risk for developing a coloboma which can result in blindness. It is thought CF fusion occurs via cadherin proteins and the strength of the adhesion is regulated by p190RhoGAP. Previous work in our lab demonstrated that p190RhoGAP mutants have an adhesive/fusion seal throughout the CF ~10 …

Linguistics And Speech: How Our Use Of Words Interacts With And Changes The World Around Us, David Anderson Apr 2020

Linguistics And Speech: How Our Use Of Words Interacts With And Changes The World Around Us, David Anderson

2020 Undergraduate Presentations

The use of words, whether they reach another’s ears or not, changes the world around us. Words cannot change reality; however, they can change our thoughts, actions, and mindsets. Not only can they change us, intrinsically, they can affect and transform our world at large. The act of speaking on a specific subject will affect the mind of the listener, or the audience. Through this change in mind; a change that will fuel a current belief, alter a belief into something else, or create a new idea; will cause actions made by the audience that will affect the world on …

What Went Wrong With Economics?: Milton Friedman, Alexander Meiklejon, And The Reorientation Of Freedom, Aria Mia Loberti Apr 2020

What Went Wrong With Economics?: Milton Friedman, Alexander Meiklejon, And The Reorientation Of Freedom, Aria Mia Loberti

Senior Honors Projects

Economics went wrong in the midst of the Cold War, specifically the time of the terror of communism in the 1950s. It went wrong in Chicago economics in particular—exacerbated by a reorientation in how to understand and conceptualize freedom. Milton Friedman’s Capitalism and Freedom trumpets the virtues of economic freedom, or the freedom of choice within the competitive market. It represents the Chicago neoliberal position. In contrast, the luminary Alexander Meiklejohn advocates a radically different conception of freedom, and his ideas echo the voices pre-1950 Chicago economics. Meiklejohn promotes political freedom over economic freedom: championing absolute protection for free speech, …

Constructing A Series Of Informative Videos And Building Social Media Platforms For Save One Soul Animal Rescue League, Cassandra Munroe

Senior Honors Projects

Approximately six million animals enter shelters each year. Of those six million animals, about two million are killed each year. Due to the lack of spaying and neutering and overcrowding, especially in the southern states of the U.S., the population of animals in high-kill shelters is alarming. Save One Soul Animal Rescue League (SOSARL) is a volunteer-driven non-profit dog rescue founded and based in Rhode Island. The mission of SOSARL is to permanently rehome homeless, neglected, abandoned, and at-risk dogs. The majority of the dogs rehomed by SOSARL are transported from overcrowded high-kill shelters in the Southern U.S. or from …

Marijuana Use During Pregnancy, Amanda Diehl Apr 2020

Marijuana Use During Pregnancy, Amanda Diehl

Senior Honors Projects

Marijuana use during pregnancy is an increasingly common occurrence with little research to show how that use may impact the health of both the mother and the baby. As more states legalize marijuana for both medical and recreational purposes, there has been a notable increase in use. Despite most national medical organizations recommendation to cease the use of marijuana use during pregnancy, there seems to be a shift in the general public’s attitude about marijuana, causing many people to see it as “safe and natural”. Many mothers report that marijuana is their alternative to prescription medications for conditions such as …
