The Importance Of Anticoagulant Therapy Education, Jennifer Teixeira May 2021

The Importance Of Anticoagulant Therapy Education, Jennifer Teixeira

Academic Festival

Approximately 60,000-100,000 Americans die annually of DVT/PE (also called venous thromboembolism). Anticoagulants are the drug of choice to prevent DVT’s. Anticoagulants are considered “high alert medications” which can lead to adverse drug events if not managed appropriately. Effective anticoagulation education involves face-to-face nurse-client interaction. Through this focused teaching, nurses ensure the client’s proper understanding of the risks and benefits, precautions, need for strict adherence, and regular monitoring. This project highlights the educational teaching tool created regarding enoxaparin & heparin developed for clients on 6-3 at Yale New Haven Hospital. Medication adherence to anticoagulant therapy is key for the successful treatment …

Mexican Narcotrafficking And Its Effects, Nicholas Molden May 2021

Mexican Narcotrafficking And Its Effects, Nicholas Molden

Academic Festival

Over the course of the last century, drug trafficking throughout Latin America has led to the rise of very wealthy, influential, and ruthless criminal organizations. The organizations operate much like legal corporations and even cooperate with international associates. The power provided by drug trafficking has allowed these criminal entities to infiltrate all forms of industries and even governments. In order to secure their power and protect trafficking routes from rivals, violence between these cartels breaks out regularly. While drug trafficking is rampant throughout a large portion of Latin America, Mexico’s size and proximity to the United States’ border makes it …

Antibiotic Stewardship For Asymptomatic Bacteriuria In Long-Term Care, Laura Giovannoli May 2021

Antibiotic Stewardship For Asymptomatic Bacteriuria In Long-Term Care, Laura Giovannoli

Academic Festival

Evidence review supports the need for a nursing decision-making aid to assist frontline nurses in identifying urinary tract infections versus asymptomatic bacteriuria for patients in long-term care. Findings in studies by Pulia et al. (2018) and Doernberg et al. (2015) concur regarding the high rate of inappropriate antibiotic treatment for misdiagnosed UTIs and the need for improved antibiotic stewardship. This DNP project addresses the problem of inappropriate antibiotic use and antimicrobial stewardship in patients with asymptomatic bacteriuria in the long-term care setting. The decision-making tool used was the Suspected UTI SBAR form which follows McGeer criteria (Stone et al., 2012) …

The National Missing and Unidentified Person System (NamUs) is a database containing information about thousands of active missing person cases in the United States. We are using NamUs to investigate factors associated with cases of missing persons nationwide. We have identified several geographical “hot spots” where the rate of cases per population are especially high. We are also analyzing demographic information and case circumstances to learn more about who is at risk for going missing.

Mental Health Disparities In The United States Are Unethical, Adrianna Perugini May 2021

Mental Health Disparities In The United States Are Unethical, Adrianna Perugini

Academic Festival

In the United States, one in every five adults experiences a mental illness each year (Mental Health By the Numbers). However, less than half of those Americans are receiving the proper treatments they need to combat their suffering. The rate of Americans struggling with a mental illness is on the rise. Suicide is currently the second leading cause of death among people aged ten to thirty-four in the United States. (Mental Health By the Numbers) Suicide is often caused by many factors “although suicide has been strongly correlated to depression, hopelessness, and despair” (Johnson, 172). These deaths have been proven …

Where’S The Ball Fido? Investigating Canine Object Permanence Using A Violation Of Expectation Task, Jocelyn Jernegan, Danielle Esposito, Daniel Koproski, Alexandra Miller, Gabriela Garcia, Natasha Bader, Stella Bragoni, Antonia Perino May 2021

Where’S The Ball Fido? Investigating Canine Object Permanence Using A Violation Of Expectation Task, Jocelyn Jernegan, Danielle Esposito, Daniel Koproski, Alexandra Miller, Gabriela Garcia, Natasha Bader, Stella Bragoni, Antonia Perino

Academic Festival

The Canine Cognition Project seeks to uncover whether dogs understand and retain information about an object’s properties through the course of a violation of expectation task. Previous studies on infants (Stahl & Feigenson, 2015) found that human infants look longer at an object if something unexpected has occurred, (e.g., a ball appears to go through a solid wall) and therefore violates their expectations. Canine studies with similar methodology have had inconclusive findings. To add to our understanding of canine object permanence, dogs are presented with a violation of expectation task (VOE), similar to that given to infants. The dogs are …

Impractical Expectations In Discharge Planning: Empowerment Theory And Strengths Perspective Informed Discharge Trainings Impact On Low Socioeconomic Status Patients’ Recovery, Kathleen Sullivan May 2021

Impractical Expectations In Discharge Planning: Empowerment Theory And Strengths Perspective Informed Discharge Trainings Impact On Low Socioeconomic Status Patients’ Recovery, Kathleen Sullivan

Academic Festival

Due to a decreased access to healthcare, resources that assist in the recovery process, the ability to take time off work, and the increased stress from financial burdens of hospital bills, low-socioeconomic status (SES) patients are at a higher risk of decline in health outcomes post-hospital transition. Research documents that disparities in recovery coincides with a patient’s economic status. Discharge plans established are consistently unrealistic. Many patients expressed their original discharge goals set them up for failure.

Training and educational materials are needed to address the poorer health outcomes in low-SES patients. Empowerment theory and strengths perspective best inform the …

MODIS makes daytime and nighttime observations of the Earth’s thermal emission at a coarser spatial resolution (1000 m), while GOES-16, which has lower spatial resolution (2 km), measures the skin temperature at a much higher temporal resolution …

Data-Driven Indoor Localization In The Internet Of Things, Shervorn Mathews May 2021

Data-Driven Indoor Localization In The Internet Of Things, Shervorn Mathews

Publications and Research

Indoor localization is difficult because of issues regarding the physics of signal propagation and multipath interference. Satellite-based technologies such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are unreliable indoors due to the signal attenuation during propagation and the multi-path interference. A data-driven process using the massive amounts of data available in smart devices may be the solution to this problem as they don’t rely on sophisticated indoor propagation models like traditional methods. The emergence of methods in machine learning society can be used to fulfill this task. The objective is to estimate the location of a person in a room using Received …
