Research In Recent Trends In Fundamental And Applied Physics And Quantum Computing, Olga Privman, German Kolmakov

Publications and Research

Quantum computing, artificial intelligence, machine learning – these are all highly engaging, though oft-mysterious fields. Graced with the mystique of quantum mechanics, its applied offspring – quantum computing – is often subject to the same scientific misinformation, with many articles on the internet providing a false and often intentionally misleading depiction of the science. This project focuses, then, primarily on research in recent trends in fundamental and applied physics, with an emphasis on quantum computing. The outcome is an electronic newsletter published on Open Lab by the end of the Spring 2021 semester, each issue of which will contain no …

Peptidomimetic Inhibitors: Molecular Modeling And 3d Visualization, Sonika Tahiliani May 2021

Peptidomimetic Inhibitors: Molecular Modeling And 3d Visualization, Sonika Tahiliani

Senior Honors Projects

Zoonotic viruses, including coronaviruses, Ebola virus, HIV, influenza, and more, are ubiquitous and can emerge as significant human pathogens capable of global epidemics and pandemics. Most often, researchers spend their time and resources targeting only the human pathogens and developing therapeutic compounds to treat the associated diseases. However, a missed opportunity is targeting the zoonotic host instead and aiming to acquire the chemical and structural knowledge to inform us of the evolutionary path of the virus. The bat coronavirus HKU4 belongs to the same lineage as the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and shows high sequence similarity. This is …

Electro-Optical Effects In Ybfe2o4 Thin Films, Ram Rai May 2021

Electro-Optical Effects In Ybfe2o4 Thin Films, Ram Rai

School of Natural and Social Sciences

YbFe2O4 shows interesting physical properties mainly due to its triangular lattice structure occupied by the equal number of Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions. Here, we present the optical and electro-optical properties of YbFe2O4 thin films. The electronic excitations in YbFe2O4 display strong temperature dependence and these excitations can also be modified by applied electric fields. The field-induced changes in optical properties (up to ~10%) vary almost linearly with applied electric fields at low temperatures, but they disappear above 120 K. The observed electro-optical effects can be interpreted as the effects of external electric fields on the orbital-charge ordering of Fe ions.

Beyond The Politics Of Climate Change: How Education And Income Level Affect Environmental Values, Joanna Falla May 2021

Beyond The Politics Of Climate Change: How Education And Income Level Affect Environmental Values, Joanna Falla

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Human-caused climate change has been acknowledged for decades, but public opinion on its validity and severity has been consistently questioned in the United States. Despite the overwhelming evidence pointing towards fossil fuel emissions and unsustainable practices as the leading causes of global climate change, its politicization during the beginning of the century has seriously slowed down America’s path towards a green future. Because this has become a partisan issue for many voters, considerable research has been done on the affiliation between party identification and public opinion on climate change. Although party identification has been studied as a major factor, other …

The Effect Of Curcumin And Piperine On The Human Gut Epithelium And Resident Microbiota, Vraj Patel Apr 2021

The Effect Of Curcumin And Piperine On The Human Gut Epithelium And Resident Microbiota, Vraj Patel

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

The microbiome is a dynamic ecosystem with multiple regulatory properties that influence physiological responses. We hypothesize that curcumin, a bioactive component in turmeric known for its antitumor and anti-inflammatory properties, influences changes in the gut identity which leads to the beneficial effects. However, the microbiome does not exist in isolation and is constantly interacting with and influencing the adjacent epithelial cells and the body as a whole. We will also be observing the changes in the cells’ proliferation and movement of the intestinal epithelial cells.

Variation In Caregiver Responsivity And Its Relation To Latino Dual Language Learners’ Language Skills, Maily Galindo Apr 2021

Variation In Caregiver Responsivity And Its Relation To Latino Dual Language Learners’ Language Skills, Maily Galindo

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Individual differences in early language skills have lifelong consequences for children’s academic well-being. Efforts to reduce academic inequities emphasize access to high-quality language experiences. A continued reliance on research using across-group comparisons espouses a deficit perspective on learners from low-income backgrounds, including DLLs. This perspective assumes that children’s underperformance, on language-related measures, is due to low language stimulation within low-income homes. The purpose of this study is to describe the heterogeneity in DLLs’ language experiences and examine the caregiver-child language interactions associated with positive dual language skills.

Gene Annotation Of The Insulin Signaling Pathway Across Drosophila Species, Christine E. Severude Apr 2021

Gene Annotation Of The Insulin Signaling Pathway Across Drosophila Species, Christine E. Severude

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

The insulin signaling pathway is a crucial part of glucose metabolism and homeostasis. It is widely conserved throughout eukaryotes and interacts with many other signaling pathways. This project aims to explore the relationship between network architecture and evolution rate through the analysis of the insulin signaling pathway in Drosophila species. To do so, we must have gene models for these components in each species of study. As part of the GEP, I annotated the coding spans of Tor in Drosophila biarmipes. While Tor in Drosophila melanogaster has two isoforms, my annotation shows that Drosophila biarmipes has just one Tor isoform.
