This study demonstrates that perceived authenticity of a cultural heritage site should not be overlooked when determining reasons for a decline in tourism. The quality:price ratio of this particular site was shown as a contributing factor to its decline in tourism, but an underlying current of discontent was identified in regards to the perception of the site as a part of Singapore’s distinctive history.

Background: Pancreatic cancer (PC) is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Reported risk factors for PC include: advancing age, a family history of PC, high-risk inherited syndromes, cigarette smoking, exposure to occupational and environmental carcinogens, African-American race, high fat/high cholesterol diet, obesity, chronic pancreatitis, and diabetes mellitus.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to characterize one of the largest national registries of familial PC (FPC) and sporadic PC (SPC), focusing on demographics, clinical factors, self-reported environmental and occupational lifetime exposures and survival status.

In 1999, Ball & Cohen called for a practice-based curriculum in teacher training. While content areas such as math and science have responded to this call, few studies in foreign language education have been published on practice-based teacher training. This session details a course designed by the foreign language department at the University of Pittsburgh. This course centers around three high-leverage practices (HLPs). HLPs are practices which are done frequently and which novice teachers must be able to implement in order to be effective teachers. Graduate students in our MSW program have been actively lobbying for more in-depth coverage of spirituality and religion within our curriculum over the past several years. This study employed a photovoice method to explore 14 social work students' experiences with spirituality/religion in their personal and professional lives, and also suggestions and assessments for the social work curriculum. Photovoice, developed in the 1990's by Wang and Burris, in which researchers provide questions or topic areas to participants and ask them to use a camera to capture a photographic response to the topic/ question. This workshop describes the efforts of one interprofessional team to develop and test a model for interprofessional education (IPE). A group of inter-professional faculty created the Interprofessional Model for Teaching Responsible Client-Centered Practice (IMTRCP) to guide IPE efforts. In July 2010 a pilot workshop, based on this model, involved 4 students each from the professions of nursing, occupational therapy, physician assistant, and social work. Using the IMTRCP model, a variety of learning activities were created including Caf Conversations, role exploration stations, case studies, and debriefing exercises. In astronomy it is crucial to understand that light is an electromagnetic wave that can exhibit interference and polarization phenomena. For many years, however, research in physics education has shown that physics students, both mainstream introductory students and physics majors, encounter serious difficulties when they endeavor to develop and apply a wave model to the behavior of light. Service learning programs seek to engage students in projects that will benefit service recipients as well as maximize student learning through activities that inform future professional behaviors and responsibilities. This presentation offers a model for conducting responsible interdisciplinary service learning research that engages and integrates faculty and students across disciplines from initial conceptualization through completion of the study. The model derives in part from a community-based research project that involved over 70 social work and criminal justice faculty and students in studying the lives and needs of poor and homeless clients receiving services from an urban faith-based work program. How do advertising messages differ in 2006 when the economy was on its way up, as compared to in 2009, just after a recession had been declared? This research focuses on the differences in newspaper advertising sponsored by financial institutions, from banks to investment companies. A content analysis of over 550 financial ads finds differences, in the number of ads and the content of ads. Findings should be of interest to academics, practitioners, and policymakers.

A collaborative project is described. Students in a web design class were asked to contact local businesses and help them create their web site (collection of related and interconnected web pages). Two phases of the project are described, planning and implementation. Planning defines the purpose and the target audience and also includes a sketch of the website's organization. The project is suitable for both traditional and online classes. Ideally, session participants should have some experience or interest in teaching web design but anyone who wants to know how to help students work collaboratively with the community is welcome to attend.

The goal of this project is to analyze the relationship between the slope of land and agricultural land use. The output was analyzed to determine a threshold point at which agriculture practices drop off in relation to higher slope values. Slope of the land is important to agricultural practices because it impacts drainage and net crop primary production. Agricultural land was extracted from the 2001 National Land Cover Dataset using reclassification tools in ArcGIS 9.3.
