Using technology is more than having a computer in the classroom. Having that computer in the classroom won't necessarily improve test scores. Knowing the right technology to use and how to use it in the classroom can implement learning and access wonderful resources that the school could never afford otherwise. This presentation examines the various possibilities and offers suggestions for classroom instruction.

Teaching students about the ethical use of materials located on the Internet is the job of every teacher that uses computers and technology in the classroom. The millennial generation has never known life without the computer. While these students are often knowledgeable about how to navigate the Internet and "at home" in cyberspace, often they are very ignorant of the potential of danger for themselves and others.

Hong Kong Happiness Index 香港快樂指數調查

Lingnan University’s Centre for Public Policy Studies (CPPS) today announced survey findings of the “Hong Kong Happiness Index 2010”. According to the survey, Hong Kong people in 2010 continue to enjoy high levels of happiness similar to what they enjoyed in the previous year, with the overall happiness index at 70.1, not much different from the 2009 level of 70.6 and well above the trough of 67.2 seen in 2007.

The survey was conducted by CPPS from Oct 18 to Oct 22 2010 via randomized phone calls. The research team successfully interviewed 834 Hong Kong residents aged 21 or above. …

Examining two iterations of a teacher professional development workshop series, a qualitative inquiry into the extent to which teacher espoused knowledge and in-use teacher knowledge was affected by teaching technology skills concurrently and separately with the problem-based learning model was examined. Using data collected from pre-post surveys and journals, a stratified purposeful selection of three participants from both workshop iterations were selected based on overall PBL and self-reported technology knowledge scores.

Copyright law does not change often; the technology that allows us to use copyrighted works changes all the time. Faculty often assume fair use covers all use of copyrighted material in their classes (both face to face and online) and they become confused and frustrated when they learn of limitations in the electronic environment. Students rarely think about copyright; they are generally unaware of how their actions might infringe the rights of copyright holders or that they themselves might hold these rights in their own works. The acquisitions and continuing resources teams at EKU Libraries used the occasion of several library staff retirements as an opportunity to reevaluate departmental processes. In doing so, we solved two major problems: • We completely overhauled our Voyager ILS ledger structure to allow for more granular reporting, specifically in relation to electronic resources and online periodicals. • We developed a better understanding of the relationship between the acquisitions, serials check-in, and cataloging functions in Voyager, allowing us to develop more seamless workflows between the acquisitions and continuing resources teams and to do a large order record clean-up project.

In order to improve both library instruction and formative evaluation, EKU Libraries’ Public Services librarians located and adapted Samson & McCrea’s (2008) Peer Review of Teaching model (PROT). This presentation explained the three major elements of the PROT, what it specifically evaluates, how it was implemented, and what library instructors have gained from its use.

Maternal health behaviours during pregnancy and associations with postnatal infant feeding practices

Objectives: To examine modifiable maternal health behaviours during pregnancy, including folic acid use peri-conceptually, smoking and alcohol consumption patterns, and relate these factors to maternal postnatal infant feeding practices.

Materials and Methods: A prospective observational study involved the recruitment of 539 pregnant women from a Dublin maternity hospital. Following application of exclusion criteria, 450 mothers were followed up at 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum. Quantitative data on folic acid use, as well as mothers’ smoking and alcohol consumption patterns during pregnancy were collected from the antenatal questionnaire. …

The Bridge Year Program is a 9-month program that enables newly admitted undergraduate students from Princeton University to spend a year of public service in Serbia, with Princeton University support, before they begin their studies. The program in Serbia, implemented by SIT/WL, includes individualized community service placements in youth organizations in Novi Sad (September to December 2009) and Roma organizations in Niš (January to May 2010) as well as group activities including orientation, intensive language training, weekly debriefings, local educational excursions and enrichment programs.
