E.S.L. At Borrego Pass School: The Program For Kindergarten Through Second Grade, Anne Bermant

MA TESOL Collection

This paper is a report on my first year as an E.S.L. teacher. The paper describes the school where I worked and the program I set up there. Included are my personal feelings and beliefs about what I was doing. This paper deals only with my portion of the E.S.L. instruction at the school. For information on the upper level program (grades 3-5) refer to Charles E. Hancock's I.P.P. I have included in my paper suggestions for activities in working with young children (grades kindergarten through second) and some observations about working with Navajo children in particular.

A Critique Of Language Learning And Theory In The Audio-Lingual Method Of Teaching English As A Foreign Language, Stephen Gregory Hanchey Jan 1974

A Critique Of Language Learning And Theory In The Audio-Lingual Method Of Teaching English As A Foreign Language, Stephen Gregory Hanchey

MA TESOL Collection

In this paper I investigate the claims on which many present ESL methods are based and examine them in view of recent developments in both learning theory and linguistics. There are reasons to think that the audio-lingual method is grounded in inadequate theories of learning and linguistics; if so, this warrants experiments in new methods and re-examination of such currently acceptable teaching methods as repetition, imitation, and pattern practice. In particular, I examine the practices of the audiolingual method which are based on behaviorist and structural linguistic theories, especially those practices which are extensions of theories about child language acquisition, …

Deprivation Or Intimidation:A Study Of Social Influences On Children's Verbality., James Lewis Craig Sep 1973

Deprivation Or Intimidation:A Study Of Social Influences On Children's Verbality., James Lewis Craig

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The deficit approach to the verbal abilities of poor children has attempted to show that the verbal acuity of these children is extremely low or nonexistent, and that this disadvantage is a direct result of factors residing within the poor child and his environment. In response to this, current research has indicated that poor children tend to develop dual registers of responsiveness: one essentially nonverbal and/or nonsensical for use in threatening, authority-directed situations (asymmetrical), and one highly verbal and articulate for use in nonthreatening, informal situations (symmetrical). It is the contention of this investigation that data collection for the deficit …

Bilingual Bicultural Educational Civil Rights:The May 25th Memorandum And Oppressive School Practices., James V. Gambone Jul 1973

Bilingual Bicultural Educational Civil Rights:The May 25th Memorandum And Oppressive School Practices., James V. Gambone

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

This dissertation presents an interdisciplinary approach to the area of educational civil rights and bilingual/bicultural education.

Chapter 1 provides a compilation of legal precedents that can be used in challenging existing oppressive school practices. The second chapter deals more specifically with the reality of oppression. Words and formulations in Washington take on new dimensions when they reach Beeville, Texas. The third chapter examines the goals and definitions of current bilingual/bicultural programs. There is the strong suggestion that these programs will continue to be ineffective as long as they remain within the definitional framework established by the oppressor. The fourth chapter …

Navajo Verb Prefix Phonology, James M. Kari Jul 1973

Navajo Verb Prefix Phonology, James M. Kari

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The structure of the verb prefix system in the Navajo verb is clarified by a thorough generative phonological analysis of the morphophonemic alternations in the prefix complex. The intricate modal prefix alternations are presented in detail. Initially, an important internal boundary in the verb, the disjunct boundary, is demonstrated. The disjunct boundary is central to the formulation of a number of common phonological rules such as ni-absorption and vowel deletion, and it provides the organizing principle for a full structural statement of the mode system. A discussion of several pervasive, non-mode dependent phonological rules precedes the analysis of the verb …

Child Language: Topicalization And Nominal-Pronominal Reduplication As A Function Of Language Universals, Language Development, And Language Situation, Eleanor Greet Cotton Jul 1973

Child Language: Topicalization And Nominal-Pronominal Reduplication As A Function Of Language Universals, Language Development, And Language Situation, Eleanor Greet Cotton

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Nominal-pronominal reduplication, a frequently mentioned but seldom studied linguistic phenomenon often associated with lower class and minority group speech, is in actuality not a rarity but quite common in language worldwide. This phenomenon, exemplified by structures such as "My brother, he plays football" and "He plays football, my brother," exists in child language as a function of language universals, language development, and language situation. One of the relevant language universals, that of the process of topicalization, requires analysis beyond the sentence level and is commonly referred to as a speaker's choosing a topic of discourse and then commenting upon this …

The Development And Preliminary Testing Of A Theoretical Spanish Language Instructional Model For Bilingual Education, George A. GonzáLez Jun 1973

The Development And Preliminary Testing Of A Theoretical Spanish Language Instructional Model For Bilingual Education, George A. GonzáLez

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The Problem

The education of the Spanish-speaking Mexican-American child has been the concern of educators and governmental agencies due to his limited knowledge of the English language, low achievement in the subject areas, negative self-concept, and generally slower educational progress in the schools. Bilingual education has been implemented as one alternative in seeking to improve educational opportunities for this minority ethnic group. The preparation of bilingual classroom teachers to impart instruction through the Spanish language - a language in which the majority of these practicing or potential teachers have not received formal professional training - has posed several problems. A …

Problems Of Assessing Bilingualism In Children Entering School., John Wesley Hollomon May 1973

Problems Of Assessing Bilingualism In Children Entering School., John Wesley Hollomon

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Recently, much emphasis has been placed on bilingual education, but little has been placed on the problems inherent in the assessment of the bilingual communicative competence of children at the time they enter school. It was often assumed that, because a Spanish surnamed child came from a home in which either or both parents spoke to him in Spanish, he entered school speaking both Spanish and English, perhaps, more Spanish than English. Since the causes and effects of bilingual schooling are to be found outside the school, it was important to take these into consideration. The extent to which the …

Teaching A Foreign Language In The Country: The Non-Native Speaker In The Country Where The Language Is Spoken, Georgia Lee Martin

MA TESOL Collection

This project concerns itself with the psychological realities of a non-native teaching a foreign language in the country where the language is spoken. Included are my personal reactions and experiences of eight weeks spent teaching an intensive course of Spanish to North American university students of anthropology in Silvia Cauca, Colombia. Various aspects such as advantages, disadvantages, teaching modifications because of the fact that one is a non-native speaker, personal feelings and student reactions to the fact that they have a non-native teacher are touched upon. The reactions and feelings of other teachers who have been in the same teaching …

Report On Supplementary Esl Reading Course, David B. Hopkins

MA TESOL Collection

The ESL Reading course described in this report was conducted for Latin American scholarship students during the summer of 1973 at the School for International Training. Since it was intended to be a supplement to the regular classes of these students, every effort was made to allow the course direction to develop according to the needs of the participants. Although the original thrust of the program was to focus upon reading attitudes, utilizing the reading interests of the students, a parallel focus on reading skills evolved. I believe that the program achieved some success by offering both the satisfaction of …

Materials in the Center included a library of texts and books discussing ESL methodology and theory, collections of games, realia, visual aids for language teaching, and supplies including audio-visual equipment for making original classroom materials. The center was deemed successful, a viable idea for future development.

A Comparative Analysis Of Head Start Graduates Their Disadvantaged Peers, And Children Above-Poverty Guidelines, Rodger William Debritz Jan 1973

A Comparative Analysis Of Head Start Graduates Their Disadvantaged Peers, And Children Above-Poverty Guidelines, Rodger William Debritz

All Master's Theses

This study investigated the impact of a Head Start program upon its participants and compared the performance of these children to their disadvantaged peers and children above poverty-level guidelines. The results of the study indicated there were no significant differences in the school readiness skills attained by the Head Start and disadvantaged peers groups. Both groups evidenced significantly weaker school readiness skills than did their more advantaged counterparts.

Recommendations include more activities for developing readiness skills and suggestions for additional research.

The Meanings And The Distribution Of The Perfect In Present-Day American English Writing, Betty Lou Dubois Aug 1972

The Meanings And The Distribution Of The Perfect In Present-Day American English Writing, Betty Lou Dubois

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

A search of the relevant literature and of textbooks of English for speakers of other languages fails to turn up a theory of the English perfect which is both comprehensive and fully explanatory. The author hypothesizes that the meaning common to all forms of the perfect of American English, which includes those forms traditionally called the present perfect tense, the past perfect tense, and the perfect of the infinitive, the gerund, and the present participle is priority to a point of reference. The perfect situates the action or state conveyed by the lexical verb in a period of time which …

Some Aspects Of Navajo Orthography, Wayne Stanley Holm Jul 1972

Some Aspects Of Navajo Orthography, Wayne Stanley Holm

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Navajo has been written, in various forms, for more than a century, but practical orthographies have been available for less than fifty years.

Navajo literacy programs have been conducted in the past by various interest groups, but the current effort differs from its predecessors in that it has the support of a growing number of young Navajo educators. Vowel length, tone, ar1id nasality are phonemic in Navajo. The current practical orthography makes use of doubled vowels to mark length, an acute accent to mark high tone, and a cedilla or "nasal hook" to mark nasality. The orthography makes it fairly …

Situations And Language: A Sociolinguistic Investigation, Rosalie Maggio Donofrio Jun 1972

Situations And Language: A Sociolinguistic Investigation, Rosalie Maggio Donofrio

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Statement of Problem

The purpose of this research is to begin to refute the deficit approach to the verbal abilities of poor children. It is the investigator's contention that data collected on poor children's verbal abilities was done in incorrect social situations. Current research indicates that language development is innate. Evidence now indicates, also, that "disadvantaged" children will be non-verbal and/or nonsensical in situations they see as threatening, while in non-threatening situations they display an adequate verbal ability. It is the object of this research to vary sociolinguistic variables, and create symmetrical and asymmetrical situations, in order to test the …

A Writing Seminar For Speakers Of Black English, Patricia Ann Geuder

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Statement of the Problem

The problem was to incorporate the findings of sociolinguistic research in Black English into a writing seminar for lower socio-economic Black students entering an institution of higher learning. This seminar was to be linguistically and pedagogically sound, efficiently structured, and motivationally effective with the result that the written dialect of Standard English would be comprehended and produced during the first term of each student's entry into the institution. The purpose of the study was to investigate the efficacy of the use of contrastive analysis methodology as a means of reducing both the kinds and numbers of …

Multicultural Curriculum Training With Pre-Student Teachers In Language Arts., Martha Weidman Hubble May 1972

Multicultural Curriculum Training With Pre-Student Teachers In Language Arts., Martha Weidman Hubble

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Despite serious attempts to increase the educational success of minority groups, culturally diverse learners continue to fail to acquire the educational skills that allow for comforts afforded the majority culture. With stress on developing native and English language skills, important cultural aspects of minority groups' heritages have not been the primary concern. This study relates to two problems in multicultural education1 (1) the inability of teachers to relate to and understand. the culturally diverse learner, and (2) the dearth of teaching materials based on the minority group members' cultural heritages.

Randomly selected from 29 secondary education pre-student teachers in language …

Reports By Native And Non-Native Speakers Of English On Their Strategies On The Cloze Procedure: Implications For Language Proficiency Testing And Language Learning, Thomas Emil Beck Aug 1971

Reports By Native And Non-Native Speakers Of English On Their Strategies On The Cloze Procedure: Implications For Language Proficiency Testing And Language Learning, Thomas Emil Beck

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

This study utilizes an interview procedure to elicit self-report, or intuitive, data from a sample of native and non-native speakers of English, all university students, on their recall of their strategies on the cloze procedure. Interview procedures appear not to have been previously used in the study of behavior on integrative language tests. Thus the primary methodological goal of this study was to determine if the interview procedure would produce valid information of practical use both to language testing specialists and to language teachers. A second major goal was to determine how the use of strategies might differ among native …

A Comparison Of Raw Scored Of Two Second Grade Groups On A Reading Test Based On The Phonology, Morphology And Syntax Of The First Nine Levels Of The Miami Linguisic Readers, Sally L. Pavletich

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

This study was designed to develop a criteria testing instrument for the Miami Linguistic Reading Program. The children involved in the study were two groups of second grade students taught to read by means of a reading program based on linguistic principles and two groups of similar students taught to read through a conventional basal program. The children were tested at the end of second grade, using a reading performance test prepared by the investigator. The study was designed to answer the following questions:

1. Is there a difference in reading test performance of second grade children who have had …
