Tres Cuentos, Beatriz Cespedes De Fantini Jan 1977

Tres Cuentos, Beatriz Cespedes De Fantini

MA TESOL Collection

Teachers of Spanish are often concerned primarily with the mechanical aspects of language. A student's knowledge of the language is principally determined by his mastery of vocabulary, correct verb forms, etc. By devoting so much concern to the purely linguistic aspects of communication, other important dimensions have often been ignored; for example, the "appropriateness" of language use in a given social context. Once this dimension is considered, it becomes clear that besides knowledge of the mechanical construct of language, the student must also acquire knowledge of what language choices are appropriate for each social situation.

In this work, three original …

The Importance Of Cross-Cultural Training For The Tesol Teacher, Susan Ginsberg Emanuel Jan 1977

The Importance Of Cross-Cultural Training For The Tesol Teacher, Susan Ginsberg Emanuel

MA TESOL Collection

Preparation of teachers of ESOL only began some thirty years ago, but with the increased need for better qualified and trained teachers, it is necessary to examine the factors that will best allow the teacher to function overseas. Much research has gone into language acquisition and the effects of motivation on the learner. Culture shock and culture stress seem to be obvious areas of concern, yet very little real research has concentrated on this area. Examination of TESOL courses shows a tremendous lack in cultural awareness courses directed at coping with culture shock and stress. Further research needs to be …

The Importance Of Including In An Esl Program: A Study Of Intonation Patterns Used In Everyday Spoken English And Some Suggestions For Working With Intonation In The Classroom, A. Rebecca Cardozo

MA TESOL Collection

Native speakers of English rely on more than just words and grammatical structures to communicate their feelings, attitudes and intentions. In fact, it is often not the words and the grammar that convey the speaker's message. Rather, it is the speaker's intonation pattern, body language and voice volume that get the message across. It is the purpose of this paper to illustrate the importance of including in the ESL classroom a study of intonation patterns used in everyday spoken English. It is also the purpose of this paper to suggest materials and methods which could be used in the classroom …

Strategies With The Rods, Joseph Barrett

MA TESOL Collection

Silent Way is an intriguing approach to ESL teaching. Dr. Caleb Gattegno and Educational Solutions have developed a wide range of materials to accompany the techniques they suggest for helping people learn languages. Prior to my student teaching, however, I recognized the need to prepare myself to use these materials effectively. This report is a summary of my self-preparation.

The Reading Process And Alphablanks, Dale Saul, Linda Driver Jan 1976

The Reading Process And Alphablanks, Dale Saul, Linda Driver

MA TESOL Collection

Alphablanks was developed as an aid for teaching reading by Rosalie R. Saul. It has been used chiefly in teaching children to read in their native language, especially in the field of learning disabilities. We wanted to expand its use into the ESL classroom. But we also wanted to present a rationale for using Alphablanks, to research the field of reading and how we go about learning to read, in order to find out exactly what areas of reading Alphablanks would help. Thus this paper is divided into two main parts: a summary of current research into reading, interpreting this …

Teaching Across Cultures: A Review Of The Personal Accounts Of Twelve Teachers, Nicholas Hilmers Jan 1976

Teaching Across Cultures: A Review Of The Personal Accounts Of Twelve Teachers, Nicholas Hilmers

MA TESOL Collection

This is a review of the personal accounts of twelve teachers who have worked in cultural settings other than their own. It is intended to be useful to teachers who plan to enter a different culture. The twelve critical reviews are supplemented by a commentary which points out the limitations of the literature and discusses common adjustment problems which appear. It is argued that the success of a teacher in adjusting to a different culture can be attributed to certain qualities of personality. Briefly stated, these qualities are adaptibility, a strong will, creativity and a humanistic attitude.

The Assessment Of Teaching Practice : What Criteria Should We Choose?, C. P. Hodgson Jan 1976

The Assessment Of Teaching Practice : What Criteria Should We Choose?, C. P. Hodgson

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

For a number of years now, the practical element of pre-service teacher education has been taken in primary and secondary schools under the guidance of members of the school staff, and tutors from the college or university department of education. The tutor may also be called upon to give an assessment of the student's ability to teach. Despite various attempts to break away from assessments by grading, the fact remains that the majority of student-teachers practise are assessed this way. The recurrent problem, then, is on what criteria should the assessment be based?

Values Hierarchies Of Three Groups Of Spanish-English Multilingual Adolescents, Jon Graham Jonz

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The research reported in this dissertation was directed toward uncovering and documenting relationships that exist between language and ideology, though It was originally conceived to be the first phase of a research effort whose purpose was to demonstrate that the experimental manipulation of belief systems would have differential effects as a function of the language used in the manipulative process. Prior to the experiment, however, it was necessary to demonstrate that belief systems could be reliably measured in each of a multilingual’s languages, and that those belief systems might indeed fluctuate as a function of the language in which they …

English Syntax And Observed Oral Reading Miscues Of Selected Children From A Spanish-Speaking Background, Martha Winn May 1975

English Syntax And Observed Oral Reading Miscues Of Selected Children From A Spanish-Speaking Background, Martha Winn

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

It was hypothesized that reading strategies used by children from Spanish-speaking backgrounds reading in English are influenced by the facility in English of those children. Maturational levels of English structures used by two such children, one estimated by the teacher to be reading above grade level and one estimated by the teacher to be reading below grade level, were measured by transformational analysis. The use and effectiveness of reading strategies including sound/graphic systems, grammar, and meaning were determined for each reader. It was found that the linguistic structures in the speech samples of both readers were typical of those used …

Th~ proactive interference (PI) release procedure was used in two experiments to assess encoding, differential encoding, and the relative: dominance of encoding attributes in children's short-term memory. The procedure consisted of Ss receiving a series of memory tests, each of which involved the recall of a triad of auditorily-presented words after a 14 second retention interval. The Ss in the experimental groups received four successive recall tests with triads of words which were homogeneous with respect to a given attribute. After four homogeneous triads, a fifth altered triad was presented. The altered triad words were also homogeneous with respect to …
