Some Educational Implications Derived From A Comparison Of Adult Spoken And Written Vocabularies, W. Wendell Phillips

A comparative study was made of two vocabulary lists, one made up of the English words most frequently used in adult speech and the other made up of the most frequently used English words uses in adult writing within selected groups in the United States. The study was based on A Spoken Word Count by Lyle V. Jones and Joseph M. Wepman and A Basic Writing Vocabulary, 10,000 Words Most Commonly Used in Writing by Ernest Horn. The first 1,000 words of the Jones and Wepman frequency study were compared with a list of 1,000 words derived from the 1926 …

There are many students who have quite serious reading problems which are not attributable to below normal intelligence. The task of this research was to determine the effectiveness of the Neurological Impress Method of reading instruction with these kinds of students. The method was evaluated in terms of its effect on the students' reading comprehension and reading vocabulary.

A study to determine if teacher-trainees who view a videotape replay of themselves practicing specific teaching skills prior to receiving an analysis of their lesson will score significantly higher on a specially designed rating instrument than trainees who practice the same skills but receive no videotape-replay and must rely on their ability to recall a mental image as they receive an analysis of their lesson.

A group of fifty-one kindergarten children (23 boys and 28 girls) from Central School in Hoquiam, Washington, were studied for the purpose of evaluating changes occurring during the school year in terms of readiness and academic growth. A series of tests were given in October and November as an inventory of the child's background of skills and readiness in the fall, and the tests were repeated in May to measure any change occurring during the school year.

Anxiety interferes with the learning processes and it affects performance in test situations. Yet in today’s test-conscious society, achievement and IQ tests are being used increasingly to evaluate the student, without benefit of information on his anxiety level. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of anxiety on achievement.

The sample population was drawn from the fourth, fifth, and sixth graders of an elementary school in the suburbs of a medium-sized city in the Southwest.
