It was the purpose of this study to survey consultants involved in reading programs in the public schools in the state of Washington in an effort to obtain factual data on their level of preparation in reading. These consultants were also asked to indicate the training and qualifications they felt necessary for the positions they hold. An additional purpose was to obtain from research, criteria for the training of reading specialists.

Project Upward Bound was a program initiated by the Office of Economic Opportunity to wage war on talent waste in our high schools throughout the United States today. The program itself was really a pre-college program for low income youngsters. It was perhaps best summed up in the following quotations from Vice President Hubert H. A taxonomy is a classifying device. There are essentially two types of taxonomies. The first is the non-hierarchial one, which is used to keep similar things together. The classification of English textbooks by subject, e.g., literature, spelling, and grammar would be non-hierarchial. The second is the hierarchial one, which is used to classify elements along some continuum. The classification of English literature books according to the relative difficulty of vocabulary would be hierarchial. Part I consists of a survey of the 1962-1963 curriculum offerings in speech and hearing therapy available to the student majoring in elementary education at eleven of the accredited institutions of higher learning in the State of Washington. The Santa Fe Public Schools have recently experienced an educational change. The formal organizational 'structure of the secondary curriculum has been changed from a one-track to a four-track system of comprehensive education. This change received official board approval on March 16, 1965.

Undoubtedly, the local Board of Education was convinced that 0anta Fe needed a four-track organizational structure in its secondary schools. How was the change brought about? Who was involved? Was it planned change? If so, what principles or steps were followed in the change process? These are just a few of the questions which prompted this study.

In recognition of this multi-faceted problem of selecting poems to use with first grade, it is the purpose of this study (1) to establish criteria of evaluation and selection, relating that criteria to the bases of poetry criticism, (2) using that criteria, to compile an anthology for use with first grade, and (3) to explicate each of the selected poems in such a manner as to help the teacher better understand and appreciate the particular poetic qualities of that poem, and hence be more effective in using that poem in the classroom.

Realizing that the parents play an important role in the counseling program, the primary purpose of this study was to prove that parents and students feel the counseling program provides an opportunity for parents to understand the abilities and needs of their youngsters and to share in their educational planning.
