Predictors Of Reliance On Children's Self-Care By Urban Black And White Families In The United States, Carol Hoffman Culbertson Jan 1987

Predictors Of Reliance On Children's Self-Care By Urban Black And White Families In The United States, Carol Hoffman Culbertson

Honors Papers

The theoretical basis for the present study derives from the recent emergence of child care as a major issue of social policy and from the apparent influence of social networks on child care practices. The review of the literature which follows will describe the development of concern over child care policy and practice and the current state of research relative to it, with emphasis on studies of self-care. Further discussion of the role of social networks in child-care choices and the general differences between blacks and whites in the use of these networks will provide the basis for the hypothesis …

Journeying Towards America: An Anthropological Inquiry Into What We Think Is Real, Jonathan Freiman Jan 1987

Journeying Towards America: An Anthropological Inquiry Into What We Think Is Real, Jonathan Freiman

Honors Papers

You have in your hands a thing: a discrete, bounded entity. You see paper, which you identify as a thing, and you see some concept, 'thesis', less directly than paper, but still as a thing.

But as much as you have a thing, you engage in a process, the interaction of my mind and yours, a time-delayed conversation. A thesis (or article or book) performs the role of an intellectual launching pad, a catalyst for thought. Both 'realities', the slices of a dead tree and the process-engagement, confront you through experience.

And yet, as Americans we are more likely to …

Physically Disabled Women And New Directions In Public Policy, 1977-1987., Mary Jo Deegan Jan 1987

Physically Disabled Women And New Directions In Public Policy, 1977-1987., Mary Jo Deegan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Women with physical disabilities now demand new directions in public policy. Starting a mere decade ago, in 1977, a driving momentum redefined the self-concepts, expectations, and united actions of disabled women. This burgeoning social movement is documented here through the geometric growth of writings articulating the vision of a more active and independent group. An overview of this Iiterature and its policy implications is provided.

A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of Several Forms Of Parenting: Mother, Genitrix, And Mater, Michael R. Hill Jan 1987

A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of Several Forms Of Parenting: Mother, Genitrix, And Mater, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Melissa Stern was born March 27, 1986, in New Jersey. For one so young, she has experienced or been the subject of interstate flight and fugitive hegira, legal battles involving her own court-appointed attorney, social controversy, the voracious attention of an insensitive media industry, and a place in history as the famous Baby "M". Judge Sorkow (1987: 26-27), in his opinion awarding custody of Melissa to her genetic father and terminating all parental rights of her genetic mother, notes professional evaluations indicating Melissa to be a "a mellow, alert, easy-to-care-for child who is blessed with a 'sunniness of disposition that …

The Meaning Of Marriage To The Voluntarily Childless Couple, June Ann Smith Jan 1987

The Meaning Of Marriage To The Voluntarily Childless Couple, June Ann Smith

Dissertations

Problem. The literature is replete with findings to show that childlessness is a contemporary and growing trend. However, no known study has been done to explore what marriage means to the couple who chooses childlessness. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the meaning of marriage to the voluntarily childless couple.

Method. This study was done with a purposive sample of 42 couples. These couples were selected from referrals made through contact with a local radio station. Some were selected from referrals made by church pastors who were aware of couples in their congregations who are voluntarily childless, …

Bomb Talk: Framing The Unthinkable, Michael R. Hill Jan 1987

Bomb Talk: Framing The Unthinkable, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Our cultural apparatus appears ill-equipped, if not unable, to conceptualize or frame the present nuclear reality in a way that lets us effectively come to grips with it as it really is: a deployed, targeted, industrialized capacity to instantaneously annihilate all human life. This paper demonstrates that we key or transform our nuclear reality in virtually every conceivable way, thus normalizing it and treating it culturally the same as any other phenomenon, including the most mundane. I argue therefore that we have before us the immense and challenging task of finding a way – working with flawed and inadequate intellectual …

Impact Of Farm Policies On Agriculture, Farm Structure, And Rural Communities, Ronald D. Knutson, James W. Richardson, Edward G. Smith Dec 1986

Impact Of Farm Policies On Agriculture, Farm Structure, And Rural Communities, Ronald D. Knutson, James W. Richardson, Edward G. Smith

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

This paper discusses the economic, technological, and political factors affecting farm and rural community structure. It concludes that the economic and technological pressures leading to a more concentrated commercial agriculture are strong and political choices to the contrary will likely fail. This conclusion implies an increased need for pragmatic transition policies.

What Sex Is Your Parachute? Interest Inventory/Counseling Models And The Perpetuation Of The Sex/Wage Segregation Of The Labor Market, Helen A. Moore, Jane Ollenburger Nov 1986

What Sex Is Your Parachute? Interest Inventory/Counseling Models And The Perpetuation Of The Sex/Wage Segregation Of The Labor Market, Helen A. Moore, Jane Ollenburger

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This article explores the “gender model” of job research instruments that are based on the Holland Occupational Classification scheme. The six Holland “environments” constitute a ubiquitous base for tests and measures in career counseling and research. Analysis of the 1973 Quality of Employment Survey provides evidence that the Holland Classification scheme replicates the segmentation of women into certain occupations that generate low pay, even after controlling for worker education, job tenure, and age. Comparable data for male wage earners show a significant segregation away from low-income, predominantly female occupations. Thus the Holland occupational scheme and the instruments based upon it …

Effects Of Seating Arrangement On Affective Meanings And Group Interaction In Healthy Senior Citizens, Judith Ann Boughton Aug 1986

Effects Of Seating Arrangement On Affective Meanings And Group Interaction In Healthy Senior Citizens, Judith Ann Boughton

Masters Theses

Occupational therapists state that environmental factors (seating arrangements) influence behavior. This ex post facto study examined the effect of peripheral versus central seating arrangement on interaction (verbalizing and looking), affect, and group climate in 41 healthy senior citizens. Nine men and 32 women aged 62 to 83 participated in two collage activities (creative and imitative) in either a parallel/nonsharing group or a project/ sharing group. Seating arrangement was added to an earlier study's independent variables (creative and imitative activities, and sharing and nonsharing groups). Dependent variables consisted of three factors of affective meaning from the Osgood Semantic Differential, evaluation, power, …

The Relationship Between Learning Disabilities And Juvenile Delinquency In Macomb County Juvenile Court (1983-84), Rita M. Bologna

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the link between learning disabilities and juvenile delinquency in the Macomb County Juvenile Court System. Because of the presence of several key variables, it was believed that learning disabilities was a unique trait of the detained population.

The population consisted of 517 male and female detained and adjudicated delinquents that were admitted to the facility during the 1983-84 school year. Biographical and crime related data were gathered by hand searches of the legal file. The learning disabled or non-learning-disabled classification resulted from interpretation of the scores on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test …
