The Roles Of Youth In Society: A Reconceptualization, Ruthanne Kurth-Schai Jan 1988

The Roles Of Youth In Society: A Reconceptualization, Ruthanne Kurth-Schai

School K-12

The 1980s have been characterized as a decade of platforms for educational change. In 19S3 alone, five reports were released by national task forces and commissions, all expressing serious concern for the future of youth and society, and all proposing recommendations for ways in which educational policies and practices might be altered, to address such concerns.

The Measurement Of Sex Role Identification: An Examination Of The Internal Consistency Of The Bem Sex Role Inventory And Its Relevance To Sex Role Therapy, Roger J. Eich Jan 1988

The Measurement Of Sex Role Identification: An Examination Of The Internal Consistency Of The Bem Sex Role Inventory And Its Relevance To Sex Role Therapy, Roger J. Eich

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study's primary focus is an empirical analysis of the Bem Sex-role Inventory (BSRI). This sex-role inventory has been heralded by many in the social sciences and has received wide acceptance. It has not, however, been without its critics. Specifically, Bem's scale has been criticized for failing to adequately protect against response tendency, for the inclusion of some of the masculine, feminine, and social desirability traits, and for claiming to measure the specific, orthogonal dimensions of masculinity and femininity. Other methodological shortcomings have been noted by various researchers, but the three listed above appear to be the most prominent. Background …

Framing ‘Bomb Talk’: The Macro Consequences Of The Microfoundations Of Social Interaction In A Goffmanian Nuclear World, Michael R. Hill Jan 1988

Framing ‘Bomb Talk’: The Macro Consequences Of The Microfoundations Of Social Interaction In A Goffmanian Nuclear World, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This paper, originating with issues generated in Professor Deegan’s seminar on contemporary sociological theory at the University of Nebraska, explores the “frames” or microfoundations of everyday interaction and their consequences for the ultimate macrosociological threat: global nuclear annihilation. The theoretical basis of this study is Erving Goffman’s Frame Analysis: An Essay on the Organization of Experience. The adequacy and comprehensiveness of Goffman’s major constructs are substantiated by data from the everyday world of newspapers and popular culture. “Keys” (or transformational conventions) are pivotal in this analysis. The central thesis of this paper holds that the keys used to transformationally …

Is Structural Differentiation In Localities A Single Or Multidimensional Phenomenon? Alternative Measures And Relation To Population, Terry J. Tomazic, Robert L. Moxley Dec 1987

Is Structural Differentiation In Localities A Single Or Multidimensional Phenomenon? Alternative Measures And Relation To Population, Terry J. Tomazic, Robert L. Moxley

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Several measures of structural differentiation for various institutionalized areas of county development are compared. Evidence regarding the hypotheses that differentiation is a system-wide, unidimensional phenomenon and that it is related to population are investigated. Scalable dimensions are found to exist among county administrative characteristics, medical special ties, commercial services, and educational institutions. Guttman scales formed from the complexity of such development are often used along with population size as operational measures of locality differentiation. The four scales and population size are analyzed together using the Guttman-Lingoes Multiple Scalogram Analysis for three different points in time. It is concluded that the …

Stability And Fluctuation In Juvenile Delinquency In Israel, Ram A. Cnaan, Itzhak Hocherman Sep 1987

Stability And Fluctuation In Juvenile Delinquency In Israel, Ram A. Cnaan, Itzhak Hocherman

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

A review of the literature indicates two major approaches in official crime rate analysis. The first approach postulates a positive correlation between recorded crime rates and a number of factors including police strength, organizational structure of social control agencies, opportunity, and social pathologies. The second postulate is based on Erikson's hypothesis of stability of deviance over time, namely that recorded crime rates in a given society will remain comparatively stable over time. We tested these approaches based on 15 years of juvenile delinquency statistics in Israel. Official statistics on both recorded juvenile delinquents and their recorded crimes were tested through …

The Multidimensional Concept Of Religiosity And Its Application To The Construction Of Mormon Religiosity Scales, Jeff Black May 1987

The Multidimensional Concept Of Religiosity And Its Application To The Construction Of Mormon Religiosity Scales, Jeff Black

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Until the 1960's, the concept of religiosity in sociology was very underdeveloped. Although many earlier social scientists were interested in religion, the concept of religiosity was conceptually and theoretically unsophisticated. Religiosity or religiousness was most often determined by church attendance or sometimes simply church membership. In the last two decades, much has been done to rectify this condition.

Stress Of The Caregiver: Effective Management Of Dementia Patients In Hospital And Community Settings, Ruth E. Dunkle, Michael Nevin

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This study explores the management problems among elders with dementia and their medical and family caregivers. Twenty-five patients were interviewed as well as professional health care personnel and a family member. Findings indicated that professional assessment facilitates home caregiving but has little bearing on successful coping by the caregiver. Variability of coping relates to the strategy employed.

Individual Experience And Critical Consciousness: Sources Of Social Change In Everyday Life, David G. Gil Mar 1987

Individual Experience And Critical Consciousness: Sources Of Social Change In Everyday Life, David G. Gil

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Social scientists tend to interpret social change as the result of collective action. However, all collective action is at some level and time initiated and carried out by individuals, who, of course, are rooted in particular social contexts. A theory of social change needs to derive, therefore, not only from the study of collective action, but also from the study of individual initiation of, and involvement in, social change oriented practice.

The following observations on individual involvement in social change practice are based on personal experience and study over several decades. They are not a theory of social change but …

The Theoretical Base Of Clinical Sociology: Root Metaphors And Key Principles, Roger A. Straus Jan 1987

The Theoretical Base Of Clinical Sociology: Root Metaphors And Key Principles, Roger A. Straus

Clinical Sociology Review

The theoretical base of clinical sociology is analyzed through Pepper's root metaphor method. Practice is found to be framed by the analogy between society and a complex ecosystem. The resulting world hypothesis is identified as Ecologism, within which the four relatively adequate world hypotheses identified by Pepper (Formism, Mechanism, Contextualism and Organicism) take their place as complementary alternatives differentially informing or guiding practice with respect to the analysis of categories, evaluation of linkages, intervention at the microsocial level of social actors and mesosocial level of organizations and other integrated social systems, respectively. Examples are drawn from the literature, and key …

The Portrayal Of Children’S Emotional Reactions To Divorce In Middle-Level Fiction, Janyce A. Struthers Hancock

Graduate Research Papers

A content analysis of eighteen novels for readers in grad•• five through nine was conducted to investigate the portrayal of children's emotional reactions to their parents' divorce. Novels were limited to those published between 1981 and 1986 and recommended in Best Books for Children, Booklist's "Best Books for Young Adults" or "Notable Books for Children, or Booklist reviews prior to July 1, 1986.

Using a checklist with manifestations of each emotional reaction, the researcher noted the occurrence of ten common reactions: denial, grief or depression, fear of abandonment and rejection, guilt, immaturity or hypermaturity, anger, preoccupation with thoughts of parental …
