The Effects Of A Social Skills Training Program On Interpersonal Communications In Parent Adolescent Dyads, Patrick Sean Noble May 1986

The Effects Of A Social Skills Training Program On Interpersonal Communications In Parent Adolescent Dyads, Patrick Sean Noble

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this thesis was two fold. First, there was an experiment in which the independent variable was the behavioral skill levels of parents and their adolescents on a social skills training program and the dependent variable was the parent and adolescent perceptions of their interpersonal relationship regarding communication and problem solving. Second, there was an experiment comparing instructional styles wherein the independent variable was the length of time used to present the social skills training program and the dependent variable was the resulting scores on the behavioral measures of the program. A modified pretest -post-test control group design …

The Classroom Modification Of Children's Gender Stereotyping Of Careers, Paul Vance Campbell May 1986

The Classroom Modification Of Children's Gender Stereotyping Of Careers, Paul Vance Campbell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This research tested the use of non-sexist occupational modules of teaching activities and toys for preschool, second grade and fourth grade classes. In addition to brief descriptions of biological, cognitive development and social learning theories of gender role development, the literature review also focuses on factors which contribute to gender stereotyping in schools: teachers, teacher training, toys, teaching materials and activities. Several hypotheses were tested comparing project members as presenters of modules versus module use by regular classroom teachers and a module-free control group in each grade. Also, second graders were tested in third grade to assess persistence of module …

Romanticism And The Rise Of Sociological Hermeneutics, Dmitri N. Shalin Apr 1986

Romanticism And The Rise Of Sociological Hermeneutics, Dmitri N. Shalin

Sociology Faculty Research

Although biblical exegesis and rhetoric, from which modern hermeneutics derived its first principles, are ancient arts, an effort to establish hermeneutics as a universal science, and especially to extend its principles to the science of society, is of a decidedly recent origin. "There is little doubt," states Gouldner, "that hermeneutics' roots in the modern era are traceable to Romanticism." Why is this so, what makes romanticism fertile ground for hermeneutical speculations? Hans-Georg Gadamer, a leading authority on hermeneutics, makes this intriguing suggestion about its origins:

The hermeneutical problem only emerges clearly when there is no powerful tradition present to absorb …

Clinical Sociology In France And Quebec: A Primer And Commentary, Part I, J. Barry Gurdin Jan 1986

Clinical Sociology In France And Quebec: A Primer And Commentary, Part I, J. Barry Gurdin

Clinical Sociology Review

Clinical sociology has occupied a noteworthy place in several French-speaking societies. Clinical sociology, socioanalysis, action research, and psychosociology—four prominent signifiers of this field—are found in the French-language literature and practice. In this paper their historically changing meanings are reviewed with examples from France and Quebec. The strengths and weaknesses of this literature and practice are discussed. Finally, French, Quebec, and American clinical sociologies are compared and contrasted.

The Clinical Sociology Of Jesse Taft, Mary Jo Deegan Jan 1986

The Clinical Sociology Of Jesse Taft, Mary Jo Deegan

Clinical Sociology Review

Jessie Taft is an erudite and insightful clinical sociologist who decades ago explored the linkages between the work of G. H. Mead and Otto Rank. Her innovative practice as a Rankian therapist and her founding role in Functional Social Work has been recognized for years. Her sophisticated application of symbolic interaction, however, has been entirely neglected. This paper traces her theoretical roots and their linkage to a sexual division of labor in sociology.

Using Sociology To Analyze Human And Organizational Problems: A Humanistic Perspective To Link Theory And Practice, Doyle Paul Johnson Jan 1986

Using Sociology To Analyze Human And Organizational Problems: A Humanistic Perspective To Link Theory And Practice, Doyle Paul Johnson

Clinical Sociology Review

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that sociological theory is a major part of the knowledge base needed by sociological practitioners, including both applied and clinical sociologists. Four well-established theories are reviewed to assess their perspectives on social reality, the kinds of problems they would be expected to highlight, and the types of solutions they would be likely to suggest. These are: symbolic interactionism, functionalism or systems theory, exchange theory, and critical theory. It is pointed out that these theories can stimulate sociologists to assess whether their priorities focus on the maintenance of organizational structures or on the …

Human/Farm Animal Relationships, Jack L. Albright Jan 1986

Human/Farm Animal Relationships, Jack L. Albright

Agribusiness Collection

There are various combinations of human beings and farm animals. This paper attempts to evaluate those few studies of humans handling farm animals within a prescribed environment. Personality traits of dairy farmers and livestock people as determined by the Eysenck Personality Inventory (Eysenck 1977) need further study (Seabrook 1974; Arave and Brown 1979). Seabrook's sample size was small (20 herds) and these herds were criticized for having low yields while Arave and Brown's questionnaire did not go far enough.

Critique [Of Identity As Theory And Method For Ethnic Studies By John Hatfield], Barbara Hiura Jan 1986

Critique [Of Identity As Theory And Method For Ethnic Studies By John Hatfield], Barbara Hiura

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Ethnic Studies is generally viewed as a minor program in the academy, lacking research philosophy and methodology. Consequently, scholars who attempt research concerning peoples of color focus on the "group": their social history, migration patterns, political and economic development, educational attainment, and lifestyle. Social science disciplinary guidelines are the usual framework. John Hatfield's "Identity as Theory and Method for Ethnic Studies" provides a basis for truly understanding ethnicity.

Critique [Of Female Power, Ethnicity, And Aging By Linda M. C. Abbott], Lillian H. Jones Jan 1986

Critique [Of Female Power, Ethnicity, And Aging By Linda M. C. Abbott], Lillian H. Jones

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Analyzing the variety of ways in which socio-economic phenomena interact with socio-biological phenomena in women's and men's lives is a complex business. Abbott's essay is to be applauded, therefore, in that it directs attention to a subject often treated superficially, if not more frequently ignored.

Critique [Of Female Power, Ethnicity, And Aging By Linda M. C. Abbott], Faye Pauli Whitaker Jan 1986

Critique [Of Female Power, Ethnicity, And Aging By Linda M. C. Abbott], Faye Pauli Whitaker

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

"Female Power, Ethnicity, and Aging" will surely be of interest to readers of this journal. Scholars in ethnic and women's studies have, no doubt, considered at one time or another the impact of ethnicity and age on the power of women in our culture and have a sense of the negative influence of these factors on women who as a group have marginal status in our power structures. So it is that we are anxious to have our sense of these relationships documented in some way or to have the philosophical implications of the intersections of these factors explored and …

Identity As Theory And Method For Ethnic Studies, John Hatfield Jan 1986

Identity As Theory And Method For Ethnic Studies, John Hatfield

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The question of identity is fundamental to human life. "Who am I," as a biological and psychological being; as a member of a human group with a particular style and history; as a participant in the common human values, perceptions, and processes which transcend any particular group? Ethnic studies should have as its focus the whole human being, articulated in the biological, socio/cultural, and psycho/personal categories, and the methodology for ethnic studies should reflect the process by which people live and move within the named categories. The interaction of people who are self-consciously engaged in exploring their lives biologically, culturally, …

Critique [Of Puerto Ricans: White Or Non- White? By Robert A. Martinez], Terry Simmons Jan 1986

Critique [Of Puerto Ricans: White Or Non- White? By Robert A. Martinez], Terry Simmons

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

When the first Dutch missionaries reached the far shores of Java, they heard rumors of a recently captured large white monkey being held in a remote village. By the time the missionaries reached the village, however, the mysterious monkey had vanished. They found only the post where it had been tied. Chiseled in stone nearby in Latin, English and Dutch were these words: "Help! I am a Dutch sailor."

[Review Of] Virginia Sapiro. Women In American Society, Linda M. C. Abbott Jan 1986

[Review Of] Virginia Sapiro. Women In American Society, Linda M. C. Abbott

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Political scientist Virginia Sapiro's introductory-level women's studies text is unusual in the ease with which it integrates the data bases which form the foundation for its multidisciplinary approach. Although it assumes no background in the social sciences, the book is nevertheless demanding in the rigor and complexity of its analysis. Striking a balance between societal and individual concerns, the work moves easily from one framework to another, drawing content and methodology from fields as diverse as biology and religion.

Race And Class In American Race Relations Theory, 1894-1939, Vernon Williams Jr. Jan 1986

Race And Class In American Race Relations Theory, 1894-1939, Vernon Williams Jr.

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

The purpose of this essay is to identify the origins of the debate between Wilson and Pinkney. The period covered focuses on the years 1894 to 1939 - from the publication of Franz Boas's "Human Faculty as Determined by Race" in the Proceedings of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1894, to the publications of Robert E. Park's "The Nature of Race Relations" in 1939. It is my argument that the parameters of the discussion regarding the progressiveness of race relations in the United States were defined during these years, and that all current theories are but …

Learning About Women And Urban Services In Latin America And The Caribbean, Marianne Schmink, Judith Bruce, Marilyn Kohn Jan 1986

Learning About Women And Urban Services In Latin America And The Caribbean, Marianne Schmink, Judith Bruce, Marilyn Kohn

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

In 1978 when the Population Council formulated a program to learn more about low-income urban women’s access to services, the dearth of information was striking, particularly in contrast to the emerging body of information delineating access to credit, extension, membership in rural institutions, and representation in local governments. Access to services was much less well-defined owing to the diverse cultures that meet in the urban environment, the mobility of city life, and the fluidity of households. Urban development planners, researchers, and those involved in community action projects in a number of South American cities were approached to find out what …

A Cross-Cultural Comparative Analysis Of Levels Of Social Development And Gender Stratification, Helen Elisabeth Wells Jan 1986

A Cross-Cultural Comparative Analysis Of Levels Of Social Development And Gender Stratification, Helen Elisabeth Wells

Honors Papers

There is a current debate in social science literature, in Marxist theory, and in Feminist theory on the role of gender in affecting the form of inequality. Particular emphasis is placed on the controversy over whether or not women suffer universal exploitation and oppression. The debate over the role of gender in the stratification process is further complicated by a division in orientation: some consider gender inequality to be conditioned by relations of production or distribution that arise historically, and therefore are not universal (Engles 1968; Friedl 1978; Sacks 1974; Sanday 1974); while others trace it ultimately to fundamental biological …

Viewers' Perceptions Of Gender Roles On Television, Susan Barbara Prager Jan 1986

Viewers' Perceptions Of Gender Roles On Television, Susan Barbara Prager

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation develops and applies a method for studying viewers' perceptions of gender roles on television. Two hypotheses–selective perception and oversocialization–were tested. In contrast to other studies which rely on subjects' long-term memories, subjects were shown a tape of One Day at a Time, a popular television show, immediately prior to responding to a questionnaire on the show. Subjects were also asked for demographic data and administered the Demplewolff Sex Role Attitude Test. T-Tests and correlations were done, using groups formed around the sex role attitudes of the subjects (as measured by the Demplewolff Sex Role Attitude Test), as …
