Beggars Before God. The First Beatitude, Martin H. Franzmann Dec 1947

Beggars Before God. The First Beatitude, Martin H. Franzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The retention of the old translation is all the more surprising in view of the fact that one of the R. S. V. translators, E. J. Goodspeed, had, in his own American Translation of 1939, offered a translation ("Blessed are those who feel their spiritual need": similar to, but clearer than, Moffatt's of 1913: "Blessed are those who feel poor in spirit"), which, while it does not convey the full intent of the original, is much truer to the Greek and clearer in English. Goodspeed has reasserted, rather than defended, his translation in his Problems of New Testament Translation (1945), …

Sermon Study On Micah 7:14-20, Th. Laetsch May 1947

Sermon Study On Micah 7:14-20, Th. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

The year 1947 is the Centennial year of the organization of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States. The concluding verses of the Book of Micah are a very suitable text for Trinity Sunday in this Centennial year. The Epistle Lesson appointed by the ancient Church for this Sunday speaks of the unsearchable wisdom and the unfathomable judgments of God relating to His plan of salvation, while the Gospel tells us of regeneration and justification by faith as the only way to eternal life. In like manner Micah calls our attention to the marvelous things that God …

The Presbyter John Controversy, Paul H. Heitmann

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the problem of the Presbyter John by following the controversy that has raged around his name, by taking a look at the status of the controversy today, and by considering the evidence in regard to some of the chief matters in the controversy.

Why Should Our Pastors, Teachers, And Professors Subscribe Unconditionally To The Symbolical Writings Of Our Church?, C. F. Walther

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Symbols are confessions of faith or of the doctrine of the Church and never were intended to be anything more nor less; therefore an unconditional subscription to the Symbols can be interpreted in only one way.

The Minister And His Greek New Testament, Eric C. Malte Jan 1947

The Minister And His Greek New Testament, Eric C. Malte

Concordia Theological Monthly

Languages differ radically among themselves, but while each of the modern nations is proud of its mother tongue and will dispute its supremacy with any of the others, scholars and competent authorities are generally agreed in conceding that the classical Greek is in many ways superior to all its successors and the well-nigh perfect medium for the utterance of genius and the expression of thought. The Greek language is a remarkable one in many respects and possibly the most noteworthy product of the Greek nation.

The Communist Manifesto, Paul M. Bretscher Oct 1946

The Communist Manifesto, Paul M. Bretscher

Concordia Theological Monthly

For Communists The Communist Manifesto, joint product of Karl Marx (1818-1883) and Friedrich Engels (1820-1895), is, indeed, an "immortal" document. In the whole realm of communistic literature no other publication has exerted so potent and far-reaching an influence as the Manifesto. In A Handbook of Marxism, the official manual of orthodox Communism, the Manifesto occupies. the first place. The last document in the Handbook, "A Programme of the Communist International" (1928), is, as the "Programme" itself declares, "in a sense a restatement of The Communist Manifesto of 1848 in relation to the imperialist stage of capitalism." The "Programme" repeats verbatim …

The Bible Of Kralice, Jaroslav Jan Pelikan May 1946

The Bible Of Kralice, Jaroslav Jan Pelikan

Bachelor of Divinity

When, as is recorded in the Gospel according to Saint Matthew, Christ raised wounded hands in blessing over His apostles before He ascended to the Father, He gave the command to "teach all nations." When, as is recorded in the Book of Acts, the promised Paraclete was sent upon the apostles, they "began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."

Frederich Conrad Dieterich Wyneken 1810-1876, Edward Saleska May 1946

Frederich Conrad Dieterich Wyneken 1810-1876, Edward Saleska

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

We believe that Wyneken may rightly be called "the nineteenth century patriarch of the American Lutheran Church” in the same measure in which Muehlenberg is recognized as such in the preceding century. It is the life, work and influence of this man of God which speaks to us from the pages of the past in this brief history, speaking as one of the organizers and founders, to his first love, a Church, which, by God's grace, celebrates its first centennial.

A Historical Study Of The Exploration Of Utah Valley And The Story Of Fort Utah, Ray C. Colton Jan 1946

A Historical Study Of The Exploration Of Utah Valley And The Story Of Fort Utah, Ray C. Colton

Theses and Dissertations

The exploration of Utah Valley and the history of Fort Utah is the story of the conquest and colonization of the American frontier. Discovered in the days of Western expansion, the Valley was identified with the principal factors in the development of the Intermountain West. It heard the chant of the gray robed Franciscan priests, became a favorite haunt of the trail blazing fur trapper and trader, was the site of the ancient rendezvous of the Indian, saw the gold seekers trudge wearily on to California, and with the founding of Fort Utah served as the springboard of Southern Utah …

Religion In The Works Of Heinrich Heine, Ellen Frances Deruchie Jan 1946

Religion In The Works Of Heinrich Heine, Ellen Frances Deruchie

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The life of Heinrich Heine presents many contradictions. He was a militant Hebrew who never held to the tenets of the Jewish faith, a Christian who admired Jesus, but despised the dogmas of Christianity, a German who loved his country with all his heart but became a voluntary expatriate. In addition, he was a poet who could rise to the very heights or lyricism, but then offend his readers with an outburst of mockery or blasphemy. With a mind so tormented, and a character so complex, it is no wonder that his writings present so many conflicting views. Only one …

Forgiveness In The Lxx, Richard T. Du Brau Apr 1945

Forgiveness In The Lxx, Richard T. Du Brau

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Messianic 130th Psalm sings in its key verse: "There is forgiveness with Thee." The Hebrew salach (forgiveness, to forgive) is generally rendered in the Septuagint ι̇λασυός ι̇λάσχομαι. Its primary significance is to shelter, to cover. The classics transposed its meaning to the religious procedure of the conciliation of the gods; with them ι̇λάσχομαι denotes obtaining the favor of the gods. Homer always uses it so.

Syntactical Peculiarities In Revelation, Paul M. Bretscher Feb 1945

Syntactical Peculiarities In Revelation, Paul M. Bretscher

Concordia Theological Monthly

"I see his dialect and language not accurately conforming to Greek. I see him making use of idioms of foreign turn and here and there even tending to solecism." So wrote Dionysius Magnus.

Since the days of Dionysius Magnus, the style and language employed by the author of Revelation has been variously assessed. Among modem writers on the subject the opinions of Moulton, Swete, Benson, Debrunner, Charles, Howard, Robertson, Radermacher, and Lohr are particularly noteworthy.

The Influence Of The Black Death Upon The Life And Works Of John Wycliffe, William Henline Dec 1944

The Influence Of The Black Death Upon The Life And Works Of John Wycliffe, William Henline

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper then is to ascertain to what extent John Wycliffe was influenced by one of the greatest calamities which has ever come upon the world.

To the average person the Black Death recalls vaguely a horrible phase in medieval Europe which merely came, but also merely went. This great blight was not a passing thing. It left lasting, livid scars on succeeding generations. It was a type of revolution from which no class escaped; no institution remained unaffected. In fact, many of the medieval institutions were all but destroyed by the Black Death. It also accentuated …
