Amerindian Creation Myths And A Common Tradition, Robert L. Lail Jun 1950

Amerindian Creation Myths And A Common Tradition, Robert L. Lail

Bachelor of Divinity

Thus the reader has been led to the subject of this thesis. He is aware of a universal consistency of beliefs. It is quite evident that there is a likeness between these beliefs and the accounts of Scripture. The reader is also aware of the fact that there is a difference of opinion among students of anthropology concerning the origin of these similarities. With this overall view in mind, the author has decided to limit the investigation to creation myths, and, with these, the concept of a Creator-God. The author has limited the thesis further to myths and fragments of …

Sermon Study On 2 Kings 14:8-9, Walter R. Roehrs Sep 1949

Sermon Study On 2 Kings 14:8-9, Walter R. Roehrs

Concordia Theological Monthly

This text contains one of the shortest parables of Scripture. One verse tells the story. Its brevity, however, does not impair its dramatic effectiveness. In one telling blow it delivers a graphic, cutting lesson on a deep-rooted evil of human nature.

Pagan Elements In The Catholicism Of Guatemala, Fred Pankow Jun 1949

Pagan Elements In The Catholicism Of Guatemala, Fred Pankow

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is the purpose of this thesis, then, to demonstrate that the people of Guatemala are not even truly Roman Catholic, much less Christian. We shall likewise present the reason for this fact, namely, that some teachings and many practices of the Roman Catholic Church in Guatemala were taken over directly from the Indian religions. Hence the title of this thesis shall be: "Pagan Elements in the Teaching of and the Practices of Roman Catholicism in Guatemala.”

A Study Of Latin Words In The Greek New Testament, Esther Laverne Benjamin Jan 1949

A Study Of Latin Words In The Greek New Testament, Esther Laverne Benjamin

Graduate Thesis Collection

The primary purpose of this work is to call attention to the existence of Latin words in the Greek New Testament and to present an objective study of them. As a corollary to this study, the impact of Graeco-Roman culture upon Judea in terms of these words, their synonyms, and related words is pointed out. Glimpses of the background of the New Testament figures afforded through this study lend perspective to the New Testament pages.

Essays In Hermeneutics, Martin H. Franzmann Oct 1948

Essays In Hermeneutics, Martin H. Franzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

"Holy men of God spake as they were moved by, the Holy Ghost." Heretofore, in the circle of language and in the circle of history, we have been concentrating on the fact that "men ... spake," on the fact that God the Holy Ghost spoke in tongues in definite moments in history. We have been, therefore, concerned largely with the skills and techniques of interpretation. In the circle of Scripture we pass from skills and techniques to what is rather an attitude, a gift of God, a charisma to be prayed for. For we are now concerned with the fact …

Brief Studies In The Prophets, L. Fuerbringer

Concordia Theological Monthly

In resuming these brief studies, we do so in response to repeated requests by readers of this journal in whom they had aroused interest not only to study in detail the Prophets in question, but also, on the basis of these brief studies, to preach on these Prophets before their congregations in Sunday evening and weekday services or to treat them in their Bible classes for adults.

Rhetoric In The New Testament, W. A. Jennrich May 1948

Rhetoric In The New Testament, W. A. Jennrich

Concordia Theological Monthly

It is a most natural and yet striking fact that the New Testament originally was written in Greek. This is striking because the literature of the Greek New Testament had its origin in a Hebrew background; it is natural because the Greek language was the Weltsprache in the century that gave birth to the New Testament.

Emil Brunner And His Idea Of Chrisitan Philosophy, Vernon Boriack Apr 1948

Emil Brunner And His Idea Of Chrisitan Philosophy, Vernon Boriack

Bachelor of Divinity

By this method Christian revelation can maintain its station unblushingly and remain vital and valid for any scientific world view that future generations may evolve. Thus today, Emil Brunner - prolific writer, brilliant lecturer, stirring preacher - has taken his stand and is zealously striving to reinterpret, theologically and philosophically what he thinks Christianity must be made to mean for his community and for the whole world at large if the Church would endure.

The Term "Fear God" In The Old Testament, H. O. Keinath Feb 1948

The Term "Fear God" In The Old Testament, H. O. Keinath

Concordia Theological Monthly

The words "fear," "fearful," "fearfulness," occur rather frequently in the Bible. It would be a mistake to assume, however, that each "fear" of the King James Version is a translation of the same Hebrew word. In the Old Testament we find that no less than seventeen Hebrew words of different roots are at some time or other rendered by "fear," "fearfulness," etc., in the Authorized Version.
