Luther: A Blessing To The English, W. Dallmann May 1942

Luther: A Blessing To The English, W. Dallmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The First English Lutherans and the First English Lutheran Theological Seminary

''Martin Luther" is written over the page with the names of Gardiner, Cranmer, Thirlby, and Bilney, the degree list of Cambridge in 1521.

A committee was sent to London to have Luther's books examined and to get an order from Cardinal Wolsey to burn them - Drs. Humfrey; Robert Ridley, uncle of the martyr; John Watson, praised by Erasmus; and Henry Bullock, a pupil of Erasmus, ''most learned Bovillus," now professor of Greek and vice-chancellor.

The books were burned on Market Hill about the Easter term, and the grand …

Verbal Inspiration- A Stumbling-Block To The Jews And Foolishness To The Greeks, Th. Engelder Mar 1942

Verbal Inspiration- A Stumbling-Block To The Jews And Foolishness To The Greeks, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

The second objection to Verbal Inspiration is based on the so-called unethical portions of the Bible. The mistakes of the Bible are to the moderns a small matter compared with the ethical blemishes they see in the Bible. These alleged immoralities and indecencies scandalize them beyond expression. That is what arouses their most violent protest. The moderns, both conservatives and liberals, join with the unbelievers and infidels in loudly protesting that the Bible as it stands contains much that outrages their moral sensibilities. What the present age needs is an expurgated Bible; and since Verbal Inspiration stands for an unexpurgated …

Verbal Inspiration- A Stumbling-Block To The Jews And Foolishness To The Greeks, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

Robert F. Horton is "smitten with amazement at the unobservant and unintelligent treatment of Scripture which alone has rendered the old theory of Inspiration possible for thinking men." (Revelation. and the Bible, p.120.) F. Pieper finds that "the objections to the verbal inspiration of Holy Scripture do not manifest great ingenuity or mental acumen, but the very opposite" (What Is Christianity? P. 243). Who is right? Let us examine a few more of the absurdities and sophistries employed by the moderns in their polemics against Verbal Inspiration.

Dignified Methods Of Church Publicity, August Brustat Apr 1941

Dignified Methods Of Church Publicity, August Brustat

Bachelor of Divinity

Church publicity is an important phase of church work. It is the MEANS by which we call to the attention of immortal souls the truth of salvation in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Methods of church publicity are an important part of the curriculum of a theological Seminary. Prospective ministers of the Gospel will be greatly aided in their future parish duties if dignified ways and means of publicizing the Gospel are called to their attention in the course on Practical Theology.

Sermon Study For Good Friday, 2 Cor. 5:14-21, Th. Laetsch Apr 1941

Sermon Study For Good Friday, 2 Cor. 5:14-21, Th. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

Over against the calumnies of his opponents and the misunderstandings of his beloved Corinthians, Paul defends in chaps.1-7 of his Second Letter to the Corinthians the sincerity of his purpose and the genuineness and glory of his apostolic calling. As the prophets of the Old Testament had been called mad fellows, 2 Kings 9:11; Jer. 29:26 f.; as Christ had been similarly stigmatized, Mark 3:21,22; John 7:20, so, in order to disparage Paul's person and message, his opponents had charged him with being a madman, out of his senses, a visionary and deceiver. In v.13 Paul had assured his readers …

The Bible - Is It The Word Of God, Or Does It Merely Contain The Word Of God?, Ed. Koehler Jan 1941

The Bible - Is It The Word Of God, Or Does It Merely Contain The Word Of God?, Ed. Koehler

Concordia Theological Monthly

Whether the Bible is the Word of God or whether it merely contains the Word of God has been a matter of controversy ever since higher criticism applied its dissecting-knife to the Sacred Record. While not bold enough to discard the entire Book as a human fabrication, men held that beside some divine truths the Bible contained quite a number of human interpolations and opinions, yea, even myths, fables, errors, and contradictions. Also in our day there are those who will not regard the whole Bible as the authoritative and inerrant Word of God, whose every statement they must accept …

The Internal Relationship, Linguistic And Theological, Between The Gospel Of John And The Epistles Of John, Marvin Kammrath Apr 1940

The Internal Relationship, Linguistic And Theological, Between The Gospel Of John And The Epistles Of John, Marvin Kammrath

Bachelor of Divinity

The intrinsic value of a paper such as the one here presented, lies not so much in the impression made by the finished product as in the profitable textual study which it entails. The task of digging deep into the language and theology of four books of the New Testament has been a pleasant one. In addition to the joy of working with the original Greek of the sacred New Testament, of making careful literal translations and thorough exegetical studies, there has been the added satisfaction of unfolding cumulative doctrinal evidence overwhelming in its depth and extent.

The Northwestern Shoshone Indians, (A) Under Tribal Organization And Government, (B) Under The Eccleastical Administration Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints As Exemplified At The Washakie Colony, Utah, Joshua T. Evans May 1938

The Northwestern Shoshone Indians, (A) Under Tribal Organization And Government, (B) Under The Eccleastical Administration Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints As Exemplified At The Washakie Colony, Utah, Joshua T. Evans

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Northwestern Shoshone Indians is the tribe of Indians that inhabited the territory north of the Great Salt Lake comprising the northern part of Utah and the Southern part of Idaho. The Indians have loose boundary lines, yet we can definitely state that this tribe occupied the territory from the Weber river on the South to the Snake river on the North; from Bear Lake and Bear river on the East to Raft river and Goose creek on the West. Their confines would take in Weber, Rich, Box Elder, Cache, and part of Morgan, counties in Utah; and Bear Lake, …

The Import And Content Of Luther's Exegetical Lectures On The Epistle To The Hebrews, Walter E. Buzin Feb 1938

The Import And Content Of Luther's Exegetical Lectures On The Epistle To The Hebrews, Walter E. Buzin

Concordia Theological Monthly

It has been abundantly proved that, when Luther nailed the famous Ninety-five Theses to the door of the Castle Church In Wittenberg, he had no thought of disrupting the Church. The tenor of the theses shows very clearly that he had in mind only to uphold the honor and the integrity of the Church he loved and to keep his fellow human beings from being defrauded financially as well as spiritually. His theses likewise show that he wanted to be and remain a faithful subject of the Pontiff at Rome. He took for granted that the Pope would heartily disapprove …

The Pastor's Professional Bible-Study, Th. Laetsch Feb 1938

The Pastor's Professional Bible-Study, Th. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

The term ''professional Bible-study" may be taken in a twofold sense, either making Bible-study one's profession or studying the Bible in connection with, preparatory for, in a manner appropriate to, one's profession. In both senses the faithful pastor should be a professional Bible-student. Above all, a pastor is to be able to teach, 1 Tim. 3: 2; 2 Tim. 2: 2, teach, not man's wisdom, but that wisdom of God in a mystery revealed only in Holy Scripture, 1 Cor. 2: 6-15. Hence he cannot be and remain a faithful pastor without making this Book the subject of his life's …

The Pastor A Bible Student, W. Arndt Dec 1937

The Pastor A Bible Student, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

To make an attempt in this journal or anywhere else to create enthusiasm in ministers for a study of the Holy Scriptures would seem to be about as superfluous as urging a professional concert Pianist to keep in practise by frequently playing approved exercises, or a surgeon to continue performing and witnessing operations. Is there a minister who is not convinced that faithful, regular study of the Bible is a necessity for him? Still, human weakness being what it is and hindrances of thorough, consistent Bible-study by the pastor increasing with alarming rapidity, a few words on this subject, introductory …

The Pastor And His Guide, O. A. Geiseman Nov 1937

The Pastor And His Guide, O. A. Geiseman

Concordia Theological Monthly

When God created Adam and Eve, He did not at once provide them with a radio set and a vacuum sweeper, but He did say to them, Subdue the world. The task of complying with that command has taxed human strength, wisdom, and resourcefulness from that day unto this. Employing processes of investigation and experimentation, man has slowly, unevenly perhaps, but nevertheless surely made remarkable progress in his struggle to subject the forces of nature to his will.

The Amazing Mass Of Biblical Manuscripts, R. T. Du Brau Jul 1937

The Amazing Mass Of Biblical Manuscripts, R. T. Du Brau

Concordia Theological Monthly

This year of our Lord, 1937, bids fair to become the beginning of a third great period in the history of the Greek text of our Bible. Later generations of Bible-lovers will no doubt refer to this period of textual criticism as that of decipherment, transcription, and conservative comparison. True, this latter textual activity has been in progress for the last generation, but it becomes apparent with the wealth of material now on hand that only a modest beginning has been made. The century just ended, from 1838 to 1936, has resolved itself into an age of amazing discoveries of …

A Refutation Of Modern Higher Critical Arguments Against The Authenticity Of The Davidic Psalms, W C. Koester May 1936

A Refutation Of Modern Higher Critical Arguments Against The Authenticity Of The Davidic Psalms, W C. Koester

Bachelor of Divinity

Setting out to inspect literary productions, the higher critics seek to ascertain their dates, their authors and their value "as they themselves may yield the evidence." It is our purpose here, however, to deal only with their considerations advanced in opposition to the conservative view, that David is the author of those Psalms ascribed to him in their titles (seventy-three in all), and in favor of the critical view, advocating a late origin in either exilic or post-exilic times. In classifying their arguments we find that there are essentially three modes of attack used against the authenticity of the Davidic …

A Treatment Of The Article Of New Testament Greek, Raymond Pollatz Apr 1936

A Treatment Of The Article Of New Testament Greek, Raymond Pollatz

Bachelor of Divinity

Since the turn of the century the conceptions of New Testament language have undergone a radical change. Until this time "Biblical" Greek was essentially an isolated language. Two extremes had been followed in the appraisal of the New Testament Greek. On the one hand, the Purist insisted on finding parallels for all constructions in classical Greek. This was an impossible task. On the other hand, we had the Hebraist who found Semitic influence where there was none. Two separate groups of evidence have entered to break down these false conceptions. These are the papyri and the inscriptions of the age.

The Scriptural Doctrine Of The Atonement With Special Reference To The False Theories Of Atonement, Arnold V. Kuster Jun 1935

The Scriptural Doctrine Of The Atonement With Special Reference To The False Theories Of Atonement, Arnold V. Kuster

Bachelor of Divinity

It is a well known fact that the Lutheran, that is, the scriptural, doctrine of the atonement is being denied and even ridiculed throughout the theological world. Substitute theories have been set up, about whose banners theologians have rallied and continue to rally. Such is the situation which calls forth this study of the scriptural doctrine of the atonement, with special reference to the false theories of atonement.
