Surreptitious Ingestion Of Oral Anticoagulants, Thomas H. Greidanus, Ellis J. Van Slyck, Raymond W. Monto

Hypoprothrombinemia secondary to surreptitious ingestion of coumarin or indanedione anticoagulants may be a difficult diagnosis for the unsuspecting physician. Four such case reports are presented. The disease should be suspected if the prothrombin time is markedly elevated and the individual is associated with the medical profession or has had previous treatment with oral anticoagulants. The diagnosis is confirmed by finding a deficiency in Factors II (prothrombin), VII, IX, and X and the presence of the coumarin or indanedione anticoagulant in the blood. The immunologic status of 25 uremic patients was studied with a battery of tests evaluating the humoral and cytological aspects of immunity. The individual's humoral immune status was evaluated as follows: quantitation of the three major serum immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA and IgM) expressed in mg/100 ml of serum and compared to established normal clinical standards (±2 SD/mean); qualitation of IgG and IgM evaluated by specific virus antibody titers and antitoxin values associated with IgG and by isoagglutinin tilers of the ABO blood groups associated with IgM. A New Biological Stain For Peripheral Blood And Bone Marrow Smears, A. R. Villanueva

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

A new blood stain has been developed for the demonstration and differentiation of cell types in peripheral blood or marrow smears, parasites in blood, and tissue impression preparations. It is available as a prebuffered powder which is dissolved in 100% reagent methanol. The method of staining is simple and rapid, with no precipitate. Overstaining is not likely to occur. The tinctorial patterns closely resemble some predecessors and, as the stain solution ages the staining quality improves. It is specific, stable, reproducible and resistant to fading.

Serum Hepatitis At Henry Ford Hospital 1958-1967, K. S. Murthy, B. M. Schuman

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

An analysis was done to determine the risk of hepatitis related to transfusions of whole blood or blood fractions. Of 180 cases indexed as serum hepatitis at Henry Ford Hospital, from 1958 to 1967, 148 had been transfused at this hospital. The overall incidence of hepatitis was 1.13 cases per 1,000 units transfused with a mortality rate of 7.4%.

Although several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the transport of hydrophylilc cations across lipoprotein barriers, the nature and identity of the carrier mechanism have not yet been elucidated. The present communication is concerned with a mechanism postulating that monoesterified phosphate on the inositol moiety of phosphatidyl inositol might provide anionic sites that function as cation carriers via a phosphorylation-dephosphorylation cycle, catalyzed in its simplest sequence by phosphatidyl inositol kinase and diphosphoinositide phosphomonoesterase activities. Samples of aqueous humor were obtained from the anterior chamber of patients with uveitis. Bacterial L-forms, or cell wall deficient forms, were recovered from 11 of 19 eyes with unexplained uveitis. These bacterial variants were cultured on newer, highly specialized media and stained with acridine orange. This stain demonstrates fluorescence of nucleic acids under UV microscopy.

A B S TR A C T Prostaglandin E₁ (PGE₁) at a concentration of 1 ng/ml antagonized theophylline, and norepinephrine induced release of glycerol and free fatty acids (FFA) in human fat cell preparations. Insulin at higher doses also inhibited theophylline-stimulated lipolysis. The N₆-2-O^'dibutyryl derivative of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (DCAMP) stimulated lipolysis. Prostaglandin E1 did not significantly inhibit the lipid mobilizing effects of DCAMP. Changes in glycogen phosphorylase activity after treatment with theophylline, norepinephrine, DCAMP, and PGE₁ paralleled those of lipolysis. An antibody chemically and immunologically active against bovine testicular hyaluronidase was produced in rabbits by injecting them with purified hyaluronidase in complete Freund's adjuvant. Nonspecific antibodies, reacting with human and bovine proteins which had little or no hyaluronidase activity, were also detected by the double agar immunodiffusion technique using antiserum against these proteins. After absorption of the antiserum with bovine heart and liver and removal of the precipitation bands against human and bovine tissue proteins, the antiserum inhibited the chemical activity of the purified hyaluronidase and exhibited immunologic activity against the purified hyaluronidase as shown by the agar double immunodiffusion …

Serum immunoglobulin levels are reported in 75 patients with jaundice: 32 with jaundice due to virus hepatitis and 43 with jaundice due to obstruction. The degrees and variations of serum immunoglobulins (Ig), (IgM, IgG and IgA) in virus hepatitis (IH and SH) with jaundice are compared with those found in obstructive jaundice. In 32 of the patients with jaundice from virus hepatitis, serum IgM (100%) and IgG (75%) were elevated above 2 Standard Deviations from the mean values. Neither IgM nor IgG levels were elevated above 2 Standard Deviations from the mean values in 33 of 43 patients (76.7%) with …
