Mitigating Salmonella In Poultry Using Probiotics: Mechanisms, Challenges, And Opportunities, Oluwaseun D. Adeyemi, Samuel N. Nahashon

Food and Animal Sciences Faculty Research

The global poultry industry continues to face significant challenges due to Salmonella infections, which pose severe public health concerns and economic losses. Recently, the reemergence of antimicrobial resistance has led to the restriction of antibiotic use in poultry, especially as growth promoters, thus accelerating the search for sustainable alternatives. Among these, probiotics have gained attention as potential candidates for improving poultry health and mitigating Salmonella colonization in the gut. This review summarizes the key mechanisms through which probiotics exert anti-Salmonella effects, including competitive exclusion, production of antimicrobial substances, reinforcement of the intestinal barrier, and modulation of host immune responses. Commonly …

Faculty Research 2026

The poor clinical outcomes of pediatric high-grade glioma (pHGG) highlight the urgent need for new therapies. Oligodendrocyte lineage transcription factor 2 (OLIG2) is a pro-mitotic transcription factor highly expressed in glioma stem cells and may represent a novel therapeutic target. To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of an OLIG2 inhibitor CT-179 in pHGG, we determined the OLIG2 mRNA expression in 10 patient-derived orthotopic xenograft (PDOX) models. In vitro activities of CT-179 were analyzed in monolayer and neurosphere cells (0–10 µM) with and without radiation (XRT) (0–8 Gy), brain penetration was evaluated in tumor-bearing PDOX mice, and in vivo efficacy was determined …

Passed Down Like Prayer: The Burden And Inheritance Of The Superwoman Schema, Keyishi Shante Peters

Tennessee State University Alumni Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative phenomenological study examined how Black Baby Boomer and Millennial women perceive and internalize the Superwoman Schema (SWS), a cultural expectation emphasizing strength, emotional restraint, and self-sacrifice. Grounded in Black feminist thought, the analysis explored how the SWS is passed down like prayer, quietly inherited, spiritually charged, and embedded in the everyday practices of survival. Four themes emerged: Being Everything to Everybody, Carrying It All Until It Breaks You, We Were Taught Not to Say No, and Learning to Put the Cape Down. Baby Boomers often described the SWS as a necessary legacy forged through historical struggle, while Millennials …

Background

The Zanzibar archipelago has been a pre-elimination region for malaria thanks to rigorous control interventions, but recent surges in malaria cases have been observed. The contribution of non-falciparum species to the current malaria situation is unknown.

Method

This study investigates the epidemiology of falciparum and non-falciparum malaria species in Zanzibar. Leveraging plasma extracted from dried blood spots (DBS) collected during reactive case detection (RCD) activities across Unguja island from May 2022 to January 2023, we measured immunoglobulin G (IgG) responses to Plasmodium MSP1-19kD antigens using a multiplex bead-based immunoassay. Additionally, active infections were detected using species-specific real-time PCR.

Geochemical Fate Of Lead In Contaminated Residential Soils Following Application Of Amendments For Lead Immobilization, Hadeer Saleh, Washington Braida, Zhiming Zhang, Rupali Datta, Dibyendu Sarkar

Michigan Tech Publications

Background: Lead (Pb) persists in urban soils, where its partitioning among geochemical fractions governs mobility, bioavailability, and human health risk. These fractions are strongly controlled by soil physicochemical properties, necessitating site-specific remediation strategies. Methods: This study developed a site-specific Pb immobilization framework linking amendment selection to soil geochemistry and sustainability considerations. Pb-contaminated residential soils from three U.S. cities, San Antonio (alkaline), Baltimore (acidic), and Detroit (near-neutral), were treated with gypsum, biochar + lime, and alum, respectively. Changes in Pb speciation were tracked using sequential extraction over 7, 30, and 90 days. Results: All amendments significantly reduced exchangeable Pb (F1) and …

On Robust Estimation Of Multivariate Location And Scale With Applications, Soumya Chakraborty Feb 2026

On Robust Estimation Of Multivariate Location And Scale With Applications, Soumya Chakraborty

Doctoral Theses

The principal objective of this thesis is, in a nutshell, to provide robust estimators of multivariate location and scale which have reasonable to high model efficiency but avoid high computational complexity so as to be practically useful in real problems. We utilize the minimum density power divergence (DPD) and the related philosophy to invoke robustness. There are some computational issues while minimizing the DPD in different multivariate set-ups. We will work on this problem rigorously and come up with three types of estimation procedures which are explicitly or implicitly related to the minimum DPD methodology, keeping the computational issue in …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Over the last decade or more, our collaborative research has provided noteworthy information on the helminth parasites of reptiles of Arkansas. Because several species still need to be surveyed from the state, some for the first time, there has been a general void of information on their parasites. We therefore examined 10 reptiles, including seven species/subspecies of turtles, as well as three species/subspecies of snakes for helminth parasites. Found were 24 taxa of parasites, including two monogeneans, 14 digeneans, one tapeworm, and seven nematodes. We document several new host and distributional records for these parasites from some reptiles of the …

Owing to their immunoprotective properties, natural killer (NK) cells are critical for the innate immune response to pathogens, as well as a new wave of cancer immunotherapy that harnesses natural cytotoxicity. We sought to study the genetic and epigenetic drivers behind human-specific NK cell receptors, so that we can better understand the underlying cellular function. Here, we present a transcriptomic, proteomic (CITE-seq), and chromatin (single nuclei ATAC-seq) profiling of human peripheral NK cell subsets, which was then compared with genomic databases. Through integrative multi-omics, we demonstrate that CD56bright versus CD56dim NK cell subsets have differential distal regulatory element …

To understand the relative importance of cis and trans effects on regulation, we crossed multi-parent recombinant-inbred lines (RILs) to a common tester and measured allele-specific gene expression in the offspring. Testing the difference of allelic imbalance between two RIL × Tester crosses is a test of cis or trans, depending on the RIL alleles compared. The study design also enables to separation of two sources of trans variation, genetic and environmental, detected via interactions with cis effects. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach in a long-read RNA-seq experiment in female abdominal tissue at two time points in Drosophila melanogaster. …

A Rapidly Progressing Lower Extremity Soft Tissue Sarcoma In An Adolescent Patient, Chenxi Shi, Lydia Espinoza

Student Publications

Soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) are rare malignant tumors of mesenchymal origin with heterogeneous histologic subtypes and variable clinical behavior. Although STSs most commonly arise in the extremities, rapidly progressive sarcomas involving the distal lower extremity in adolescents have not been well documented. We report a case of an STS in a previously healthy adolescent female whose initial presentation was presumed to be a muscle strain. Over a three-month period, her symptoms worsened with progressive enlargement of a calf mass and development of widespread metastatic disease. This case highlights the importance of maintaining suspicion for malignancy in rapidly enlarging soft tissue …

Dysregulated ribosome biogenesis and p53 mutations are known to play oncogenic roles in various cancers, including pancreatic cancer. In this study, we demonstrated the therapeutic potential of BMH-21, a pharmacologic inhibitor of RNA polymerase I, against pancreatic cancer by uncovering a novel molecular mechanism involving RPA194-mediated ubiquitination of mutant p53 without affecting the ubiquitination of wild-type p53. Our key findings are that (i) BMH-21 selectively induces apoptosis and cell growth inhibition of pancreatic cancer cells with no effect on normal human pancreatic ductal epithelial cells; (ii) BMH-21 degrades RPA194; (iii) BMH-21 inhibits recruitment of both RPA194 and RPA135 on rDNA …

Foundation models have emerged as powerful feature extractors in computational pathology. However, they typically omit mechanisms for leveraging the global spatial structure of tissues and the local contextual relationships among diagnostically relevant regions-key elements for understanding the tumor microenvironment. Multiple instance learning (MIL) remains an essential next step following the foundation model, designing a framework to aggregate patch-level features into slide-level predictions. We present EAGLE-Net, a structure-preserving, attention-guided MIL architecture designed to augment prediction and interpretability. EAGLE-Net integrates multi-scale absolute spatial encoding to capture global tissue architecture, a top-K neighborhood-aware loss to focus attention on local microenvironments, and background suppression …

Radiation therapy is integral to the treatment regimens of over 50% of cancer patients. However, it is not biologically targeted to just the tumor, leading to adverse effects in peritumoral normal tissue. Selective uptake of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) by tumors realizes tumor-specific radiosensitization via increased secondary electron release from high atomic number gold atoms. Here, we review AuNP-mediated radiosensitization and outline strategies to optimize tumor-targeted AuNP delivery. Modifying the physicochemical characteristics of AuNPs, including size, shape, charge, and surface chemistry, can increase their ability to evade the reticuloendothelial system (RES) and penetrate the dense tumor stromal architecture, thereby promoting tumor …
