Lice have been intimately associated with man for centuries. Infestations with lice occur today in the United States and many other countries despite great efforts to maintain high standards of public health. Public health agencies are often called upon if infestations include or expose large groups of people, particularly those in public institutions such as schools, jails, hospitals, or homes for the aged.

C-Reactive Protein: Potential Significance Of Quantitation In Patients With Chronic Diseases, Hajime Hayashi, Gerald A. Logrippo

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in 351 patients with certain chronic diseases were assayed by a micro-double immunodiffusion technique developed and used in this hospital. Elevation of CRP values and severity of disease were evident in the following clinical entities: 31 of 54 patients (57%) with liver cirrhosis; 122 of 204 (60%) hepatitis patients; 34 of 52 (65%) patients with gastro-intestinal surgery; 8 of 21 (38%) uremic patients; and all of 20 patients with renal transplantation. There was good correlation between markedly elevated serum CRP values and degree of inflammation and/or physiologic stress during clinical course and recovery.

Gout and pseudogout, two metabolically different diseases, occur rarely in the same individual. A patient is reported who featured calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate and monosodium urate cryslals simultaneously in the synovial fiuid exudate which was removed during an acute arthritic attack of the left knee. The patient represents the seventh such case reported in the literature. The pathogenetic differences of gout and pseudogout are reviewed as they relate to the role of the crystal.

It is apparent in both lay and professional literature that we are living in an age of social crises. Clearly the shortage of resources and the problems of pollution and poverty would be greatly ameliorated if our birth rate were controlled. Despite this, a survey of psychological literature reveals a paucity of articles on birth control. Psychologists largely have their heads in the sand with regard to research to understand factors associated with childbearing. Meanwhile, the birth rate soars on and it is increasingly obvious that something must be done.

Observations On Uric Acid Transport In Man, The Dalmatian And The Non-Dalmatian Dog, Howard Duncan, April S. Curtis

The urinary output of uric acid from the purebred Dalmatian is similar in amount to that in man. Also, this breed of dog has a higher plasma uric acid level than other dogs and, like man, this hyperuricemia is accompanied more frequently with renal and bladder lithiasis. Allopurinol is effective therapy in both man and dog. Study of the fate of uric acid in the Dalmatian shows that the liver does not oxidize the available uric acid completely although it is capable of doing so when liver homogenates are studied. Consequently, the hepatic cellular membrane appears impermeable, or partially so, …

Diagnosis And Treatment Of Gonorrhea, Paul A. Kvale

The various methods for diagnosis of gonorrhea are reviewed. Gram-stained smear of urethral exudate in the mate is appropriate, but for the female emphasis is placed on the use of culture on Thayer-Martin medium. Currently effective modalities of treatment are detailed, pointing out that higher doses of antibiotics are generally required for females with pelvic inflammatory disease than for males with acute gonococcal urethritis. The necessity for follow-up is also discussed.

An Improved Method Of Staining Paraffin-Embedded Bone Marrow Sections, Wanda Pusey, A. R. Villanueva

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Cytological detail is well demonstrated in an improved method of staining aspirated bone marrow sections embedded in paraffin. The tinctorial patterns of the stain resemble some of its predecessors; thus, cell counting and identification involve little difficulty. The method has proven reliable, reproducible and a valuable addition in the diagnosis of bone marrow disorders. It is a useful tool in research problems in which objectives are the study of the bone marrow.

Because of theoretical as well as practical difficulty in the total hip endoprostheses available to orthopaedic surgeons at the present time, an anlysis of the present and potential difficulties reveals that substitution of a roller-bearing for the present slider-bearing prosthesis and the establishment of a larger end-bearing surface on the acetabular side would be of benefit. Thus, the Ring prosthesis was re-designed to satisfy these hopes. A modification of the Ring's approach gives complete acetabular exposure and control of the prosthetic insertion. The immunochemical procedure used in this hospital for serum immunoglobulins (Igs) has been modified to increase sensitivity (5-to-20-fold) so that minute quantities of immunoglobulins can now be measured directly in unconcentrated body fluids. Normal spinal fluid Ig levels (±2 S.D. from normal means) were found to be: 0.01-0.21 mg/100 ml for IgA; 0.5-2.50 mg/100 for IgG: and no detectable quantities for IgM. Normal (pooled) salivary Ig levels were found to be 0.01-2.25 mg/100 ml for IgA: trace quandties to 1.85 mg/100 ml for IgG: and no detectable quantities for IgM. Growth hormone (GH) synthesis and release is controlled by hypothalamic GH releasing factor. Thyroid hormones, androgens and estrogens in physiologic concentrations enhance GH secretion but a controlling role for glucagon and vasopressin in GH release is not established. Under stress, ACTH directly facilitates GH release while the similar action of the catecholamines is mediated by the a-adrenergic receptors. Though physiologic doses of glucorticoids and progestins do not affect GH liberation, prolonged administration of medroxyprogesterone acetate or of glucocorticoids in high dosage will decrease blood levels or blunt Gti responsiveness. Growth hormone (GH) is a major hormone of the anterior pituitary gland. Once established, its secretion continues throughout life. GH was first recognized in 1866 as a factor controlling growth. More recently, it has been demonstrated as a vital regulator of fat, carboyhdrate and protein metabolism. In fact, GH influence on the intermediary metabolism is the major mechanism by which growth and development are regulated. Numerous hormonal and nonhormonal factors have been shown to modify the basic pattern of GH synthesis and secretion. In this article we have reviewed some of these nonhormonal factors.
