Prolonging Kidney Graft Survival With Concanavalin A: Effects Of Temperature, Perfusate Composition, Ph, And Different Manufacturing Lots, Luis H. Toledo-Pereyra, Richard L. Simmons

This study analyzes the effect of temperature, perfusate composition, pH, and variable manufacturing lots in prolonging kidney allograft survival with Concanavalin A (Con A). Cold temperature (4°C), crystalloid composition of the perfusates, and neutral or mildly alkaline pH were important factors in the effect of Con A on prolonging allograft survival. Also, different lots of Con A from the same manufacturer produced variable results in prolonging survival. Thus, multiple factors should be considered if Con A is to be used to prolong kidney allograft survival.

Refractory Hypercalcemia In Sarcoidosis: Exacerbation By Thiazide Diuretics, Differentiation From Primary Hyperparathyroidism, And Possible Role Of Prolactin, A. M. Parfitt

Hypercalcemia in a patient with sarcoidosis was made worse by a thiazide diuretic initially given to control hypercalciuria alone. The hypercalcemia was unusually resistant to corticosteroid treatment during the summer even after the thiazide diuretic had been discontinued. Lack of response to corticosteroid together with decreased tubular reabsorption of phosphate and increased tubular reabsorption of calcium suggested associated primary hyperparathyroidism, but PTH was undetectable by immunoassay, and nephrogenous cyclic AMP excretion was zero. Amenorrhea, galactorrhea and hyperprolactinemia were found to be due to a pituitary tumor which was removed. The experience with this patient suggests that: 1) exacerbation of hypercalcemia …

A number of patients with and without uveitis are used to show that this study of aqueous microbiology suggests the following hypotheses: 1. Routine techniques currently used in most microbiology laboratories overlook classical and variant bacteria which might be isolated from clinical specimens with improved microbiological techniques. 2. Bacterial forms may be present in other ocular tissue when not present in the aqueous. 3. Polymicrobial infections probably occur rather frequently, especially in chronic or subacute inflammatory states. 4. Alterations in various host factors may subject some persons to a greater incidence of inflammatory episodes including uveitis. 5. Antibiotics used in …

This pilot study was developed to teach people with mental retardation about their own sexuality, appropriate community behaviors, and to develop within them a basic sense of responsibility for their own actions. Problems in social/sexual behaviors have been consistently quoted as reasons for high recidivism rates, as well as difficulties in community living, vocational placement, and other generalized stereotypes about mental retardation. Often the public remains uninformed about, does not recognize, and/or feels that sexual rights for people with any mental differences should not exist. In October, 1969, the Highway Salvage Section of the Arizona State Museum conducted emergency salvage excavations in conjunction with the construction of the Tucson-Nogales Highway. Ten cremations were recovered from a backhoe trench which had been placed within the city limits of Nogales, Arizona. Analysis of the cremations indicated cultural contact between the Trincheras culture of Sonora, Mexico, and the Hohokam culture of the Santa Cruz River Valley in southern Arizona.

Aqueous microbiological and cytological studies were performed on 134 anterior chamber taps done on 118 patients both with and without uveitis. Cell wall defective bacterial forms (CWDF) were recovered from about 40% of these aqueous specimens and classical bacteria were recovered from 12%. A statistically significant difference could not be found between the incidence of bacterial cell wall defective forms in the various anatomical types of uveitis. There were hints from this work that the presence of CWDF In the aqueous was more frequent in younger patients with uveitis, early in the uveitis attack, if there were multiple foci of …

The white-faced ibis (Plegadis chihi) which nested in northern Utah was assessed as a species with a relatively low reproductive potential. Ibises normally laid either three or four eggs in a clutch and did not renest persistently, nor with good success, if initial nesting attempts failed. Evidence indicated that the birds did not breed until at least 2 years old. Competition for food, exposure to severe weather, and predation were conspicuous sources of nestling mortality. White-faced ibises usually fed in irrigated agricultural areas, where they came into direct contact with insecticides, such as DDT which was used routinely …

Over a one-year period beginning in April, 1946, nine transthoracic vagotomies were done at the Henry Ford Hospital. Three of the patients had had a partial gastrectomy previously and the operation was done for recurrent bleeding from marginal ulcers. Thirty years later, an attempt was made to ascertain the present condition of these patients. Long term follow-ups were possible on six patients and follow-ups of one, six and 14 years on the others. All nine patients had immediate relief of ulcer pain and cessation of bleeding if present. No subsequent drainage operation was required for the six patients with primary …

Kidneys were preserved by continuous pulsatile perfusion and their metabolic rate monitored by O2 consumption. Experiments were carried out to determine if dialyzing the perfusate to supply metabolic substrates would aid in kidney preservation. A control group was compared against two experimental groups at 25°C. Average preservation time before fall off of oxygen consumption differed for each group: control - 8 hours, dialysis with amino acids - 6 hours, dialysis with amino acids and cofactors - 11 hours. Results indicated that, if suitable concentrations of metabolic substrates and cofactors were used, the preserved kidneys maintained higher levels of O2 consumption …

This paper introduces the use of the Weibull distribution function for the analysis of small samples of clinical data. It is compared with the use of the conventional analysis of variance in determining the results of a study comparing the use of gold salts and a placebo in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Although the samples were small, 14 control patients and 13 who were treated, analysis of variance determined several significant differences between the two groups. Productivity Of The Roll-Streak Method To Perform Anaerobic Bacteriology In The Routine Clinical Laboratory, Thomas R. Neblett

Data presented are derived from one year of performing routine clinical anaerobic bacteriology by the roll-streak tube method. 826 specimens from 1508 (54.8%) contained anaerobes. 162 specimens were polymicrobic (19.6%) and contained 528 strains of a total of 1051 isolated (50.2 %). 479 blood specimens contained 525 strains of anaerobes. Propionibacterium, considered a contaminant, occurred 209/210 times in blood as the sole isolate. Bacteroides occurred alone or polymicrobically 308 times and comprised 54.7% of the blood isolates and 32.5% of the total anaerobic genera isolated. Clostridium, Peptococcus and Fusobacterium were the next most frequently occurring anaerobes. The roll-streak method is …

The relationship between the number of persons per room in the home and the relative occurrence of stress-related morbidities of hospitalized patients is investigated. The social factors of age, social class, and level of social support also are examined as they relate to both density and morbidity type occurrence. The population under study is composed of all Kaiser-Permanente Medical Care Program members twenty years of age and older, discharged from Bess Kaiser Hospital during 1974, and whose diagnosed morbidity was included in specific morbidity categories. A 6-week study was made in the summer of 1971 as an initial effort to determine the extent of pollution that the three sewage disposal plants in Jessamine County, Kentucky, are contributing to its streams. With the rapid population increase in Lexington and nearby municipalities, this study should furnish a basis of comparison for future investigations. Eighteen collecting stations were established in riffle areas of Hickman and Jessamine Creeks, and coliform bacteria, macro-invertebrate populations, fish populations and chemical water quality of each riffle area were studied.

Basic principles of radiation biology and radiation tolerance are reviewed. The Implications for radiation therapy of newer staging techniques in carcinoma of the prostate such as exploratory laparotomy, lymphangiography, and bone marrow acid prosphatase are discussed. A technique for treating the prostate and para-aortic lymph nodes in continuity is presented. Complications and results of therapy are discussed.

Amikacin was evaluated in vitro against S aureus and a variety of gram negative bacilli. In concentrations of 12.5 μg/ml or less, it suppressed the growth of all organisms except 15% of Proteus mirabilis. Peak serum levels in patients, following a 7.5 mg/kg IM dose, averaged 21 μg/ml at one hour. Most of the drug appeared in the urine during the first six hours after administration. Of six patients receiving an adequate course of treatment, all but one were cured. Treatment in that patient also failed with a subsequent course of gentamicin and carbenicillin and he was cured only by …

Computer-generated depth-dose data was obtained for the region of overlap of the internal mammary and supraclavicular portals utilized in post-operative radiation therapy for carcinoma of the breast. A phantom arrangement was created and measurements were obtained and compared with computer-generated depth doses for this arrangement. The actual measured and computer-generated values agreed to within 3%. On the patients measured at the center of the overlap region, the dose was found to vary from 3323 rets to 2571 rets over a depth range of 2-6 cm. Synovial fluid from a case of pyarthrosis was cultured for fungi, mycobacteria, aerobes and anaerobes with negative results. A Cell Wall Deficient (CWD) form was isolated in numerous cultures which showed the physico-chemical reactions characteristic of wall deficient M. tuberculosis.

The study was designed to determine the hour when temperature peaks occur in adult hospitalized females, and to find if factors such as age and natural or surgical menopause with replacement therapy affect the thermal circadian cycle. Previous studies indicated that the temperature peak occurs in afternoon or early evening, but there were no investigations to determine if aging, sex, or menopause affects the temperature cycle.

The sample included 62 female patients, 29 between 21 and 62 years of age, and 33 between 65 and 90 years. Each subject admitted to the study was screened against fifteen qualifying criteria. Some …
