A review oi the literature on the hyperventilation syndrome reveals a variety of treatment approaches and a virtual absence of controlled studies of this common problem. Attempts to treat the condition by changing the respiratory pattern through mechanical means can be traced back to the first century A.D. The "paper bag method" of treatment has many psychological drawbacks and is often unsuccessful. Several avenues of drug treatment have been explored: acidifiers, minor tranquilizers, antidepressants, and stimulants. Reports of success with insight-oriented intensive psychotherapy are scarce. Traumatic Fat Embolism: Recent Clinical Experience In Combined Arterial Injury And Long Bone Fracture, John F. Lee, Roger F. Smith, Joseph P. Elliott Jr.

Fat embolization is a frequent accompaniment of long bone fracture; however, this phenomenon only occasionally leads to the clinically recognized traumatic fat embolism syndrome. Three recent cases are presented of fat embolization following long bone fractures and associated with penetrating arterial injury. Consequences illustrated ranged from asymptomatic fat globules in the urine, through serious pulmonary insufficiency, to central nervous system damage with death. Treatment should be directed at effective mechanical ventilatory support to avoid hypoxemia.

Significant increase in the useful lifetime of the implantable cardiac pacemaker has been made possible by the development of a radioisotope power source. This paper reports experience with two models, the AEC-ARCO Nu-5 (fixed rate) and the Medtronic Model 9000 (ventricular inhibited demand). Five of the former models were implanted in 1973, and six of the latter more recently. Both types of units have functioned well.

The Relationship Of The Cold Nodule To Carcinoma Of The Thyroid, Douglas M. Evans

Fifty-two cases with histologically proven carcinoma of the thyroid were studied. With some variation as to the expected incidence of the several cell types of tumor, possibly due to the small size of this series, the distribution of these cases encompassed all histologic types. Fifty-three (53%) percent of the cases where pre-operative I131 scans were recorded showed a positive, or "cold" scan. Fifty-five (55%) percent of all lesions showed extension of disease beyond the confines of the thyroid gland. This experience indicates that, although thyroid scintiscans provide useful information to be correlated with other data, there are distinct limitations to …

A descriptive-comparative survey using content analysis of medical records has been done to determine the frequency with which emotional disorders are identified by medical personnel in the population hospitalized in small general hospitals in north-central Nebraska.

A systematic, random sample of medical records was taken from two hospitals arbitrarily included in the study on the basis of bed capacity and distance from mental health facilities.

Each medical record that was reviewed has been placed in a category based on whether an emotional disorder was identified in it by the medical personnel, or whether it contained recorded behaviors that could indicate …

This paper, accompanied by the discussions and the preceding introduction, was delivered May 9, 1974 as part of an anniversary celebration commemorating a half century of existence for the psychiatric unit at Henry Ford Hospital. Established in 1924 by the late Thomas J. Heldt, M.D., as a division of neuropsychiatry in the department of medicine, the unit is generally believed to be the first to be incorporated into a general hospital anywhere. It was - and is - conducted without physical restraints of any kind, without isolation of patients, and without segregation of men and women.

For optimal growth and development during the teens, there needs to be sufficient intake of food to meet the nutritional requirements. Pregnancy during that time increases the nutritional needs. Studies have shown that teenage girls generally have poor eating habits, not meeting the nutritional requirements.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether special nutrition education classes would improve eating habits of a group of pregnant teenagers. A simple screening method, in which a bacterial mutant deficient in its ability to repair DNA, was used to detect genetic damage from a widely-used fungicide. The finding strengthens the suspicion that it may be a potent human carcinogen. The unique role of the physician in eliciting a history of exposure from a patient with cancer is emphasized in the case report.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the nutritive value of ogi, which is the national weaning food in Nigeria, and to supplement it with indigenous foods that are easily produced in Nigeria, available in the local market, locally used, and within the economic capacity of the people. The protein content of corn and ogi was determined by the Kjeldahl method and the amino acid content was determined by ionexchange chromatography. The quality of the foods was evaluated by the rat growth method and the protein efficiency ratio (PER).

Efficacy Of Betaprone With Ultraviolet Irradiation On Hepatitis B Antigen In Human Plasma Pools (A Retrospective Study), Gerald A. Logrippo, Hajime Hayashi

In a retrospective study, hepatitis B antigen (HB Ag) was found in 14 lots of human plasma pools (16-20 liters each) that had been treated by the combined Betaprone (BPL) with ultraviolet (UV) irradiation procedure. No evidence of clinical hepatitis was found during a six-month follow-up after 185.2 liters of HB Ag positive plasma were Infused into 257 patients. Since HB Ag positive blood products treated by BPL with UV produced no clinical hepatitis, it is evident that our treatment is efficacious against hepatitis virus agents.

Tobramycin, a new aminoglycoside antibiotic, was shown to be effective in vitroagainst Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter, Proteus mirabilis, indole-positive Proteus, and Eshcherichia coli. It was shown to produce serum and urine concentrations similar to gentamicin when administered intramuscularly. Preliminary animal studies showed this agent to have nephrotoxic and ototoxic effects similar to gentamicin. In our studies, tobramycin was well tolerated and produced only two transient elevations in serum creatinine and no abnormalities in audiograms and vestibular function tests. It was effective in 10 of 12 susceptible infections, including 2 of 4 with Pseudomonas endocarditis. Tobramycin compared favorably with gentamicin …

The Henry Ford Hospital with its research partner, The Edsel B. Ford Institute for Medical Research, was the first private medical center in the State of Michigan to purchase a scanning electron microscope and to begin to apply it, a year ago, to the study of medical and biological problems in both the animal and the human. This article briefly describes how the instrument works and shows some samples of micrographs produced.

Proteolytic activity of Streptococcus cremoris HP, P₂ and AM₂; Streptococcus lactis-C₂, ML₈ and a commercial mixed culture was determined in skimmilk and whey by measuring the increase in Absorbency at 274.5 nm of a pH 4.6 soluble filtrate, following incubation in a 2.5% casein solution. Proteolytic activity, rate of acid production and growth rate decreased in order of C₂, HP, mixed culture, AM₂, ML₈ and P₂ at a regulated pH (6.1 - 6.2) and 32 C. The effects of a mucoid - psyllium hydrocolloid - and an anion exchange polymercholestryamine - on the total cholesterol, total phospholipid, total bile salt, cholate, chenodeoxycholate, and deoxycholate concentrations of hepatic bile were determined in six post-cholecystectomy patients. Bile was obtained by drainage through an indwelling T-tube, which was clamped except during bile collection. Psyllium hydrocolloid treatment (12 gm/day) for 6 to 29 days had little or no effect on the cholesterol or phospholipid concentration of hepatic bile, but increased the total bile salt pool by gradually increasing the concentration of deoxycholate.
