Constructive Memory For Bizarre And Sensible Sentences, Paula T. Hertel, H. C. Ellis
Constructive Memory For Bizarre And Sensible Sentences, Paula T. Hertel, H. C. Ellis
Psychology Faculty Research
Sensible, interrelated sentences were presented with or without bizarre sentences that could be transformed to fit the context of the sensible sentences. Two experiments examined subjects' ability to recognize or recall both types of sentences, either immediately or after 2 weeks. Bizarre sentences were frequently recognized at immediate testing; they were generally unavailable at delayed recognition and were never recalled verbatim. In addition, results indicated that transformations of bizarre sentences were stored in memory but were not well incorporated within the structure for the sensible material. These findings are consistent with a constructive approach to memory. Finally, the results suggest …
The Effects Of Anticipated Evaluation On Individual Brainstorming Performance, Barbara Kane Maginn
The Effects Of Anticipated Evaluation On Individual Brainstorming Performance, Barbara Kane Maginn
Psychology ETDs
Experimental investigations of the relative effectiveness of group versus individual brainstorming procedures have consistently reported the finding of individual brainstorming superiority. Several hypotheses concerning the nature of the inhibitory factor or factors operating in the group situation have been postulated. One which has been mentioned frequently involves postulation of the presence of anticipated evaluation in brainstorming groups. That is, it has been hypothesized that group members may believe that other members will evaluate critically ideas which they produce. As a result, freewheeling production of ideas may be suppressed in the group context. The present study manipulated different conditions of anticipated …

The Effect Of Background Noise On Children's Selective Listening Behavior, Cathryn A. Chartier
The Effect Of Background Noise On Children's Selective Listening Behavior, Cathryn A. Chartier
Dissertations and Theses
This study investigated the effect of distracting linguistic background noise on children's ability to perform three-part commands. A total of twelve first grade subjects, six "normal" and six reading delayed, were individually administered a series of twenty, three-part commands. Each child performed once in quiet and once in a noise environment, and the performances in those two conditions were compared.
Symmetry Versus Asymmetry In Paired-Associate Learning: A Test Of The Dual Coding Theory, Jerry Manheimer
Symmetry Versus Asymmetry In Paired-Associate Learning: A Test Of The Dual Coding Theory, Jerry Manheimer
Student Work
The dual coding theory of imagery (Paivio, 1975) holds that there are two independent coding processes: Imaginal processes and verbal processes. Imaginal processes, in effect, present information ’’all at once" to the organism. Verbal processes, according to the dual coding theory, are characterized by a sequential mode of organization. Sequentially organized information is processed temporally by the organism, with meaning contingent upon the order of processing. The proposed thesis seeks to test the validity of Paivio's dual coding theory of imagery through the paired-associate learning paradigm.
Linguistic Surface Structure In Family Interaction, Thomas D. Macroy
Linguistic Surface Structure In Family Interaction, Thomas D. Macroy
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this dissertation was to determine the usefulness of the linguistic processes of Distortion, Deletion, Generalization, and Semantic Ill-Formedness as constructs which differentiate the verbal communication of families who express dissatisfaction with their current intrafamilial relationships from families expressing satisfaction with their current relationships. Specifically, it was hypothesized that dissatisfied families would use these linguistic structures to a greater extent in their interaction than would satisfied families.
Thirty-one family triads (father, mother, and child) were obtained by asking families randomly selected from the local high school student directory to participate. The families were given a Revealed Differences questionnaire …

The Effect Of Various Cognitive Strategies In The Control Of Public Speaking Anxiety, G. Rex Walker
The Effect Of Various Cognitive Strategies In The Control Of Public Speaking Anxiety, G. Rex Walker
Master's Theses
An experiment was designed to apply the cognitive strategy paradigm of Jaremko and Patteson to a classroom speech anxiety situation. Forty-eight introductory speech students volunteered to be tested on physiological, behavioral, and self-report measures of anxiety during two of their regular classroom speeches. Subjects were divided into groups based upon which cognitive strategy they were asked to implement: rationalization, reversal of affect, misattribution, misattribution and rationalization, a placebo control and a no treatment control.
Results indicated reductions in anxiety across trials, but these were not attributable to treatment. These findings are discussed in terms of the application of laboratory paradigms …
Modes Of Representation, The Epistemic Subject And Developmental Word Association Phenomena, Ellen M. Gerschitz
Modes Of Representation, The Epistemic Subject And Developmental Word Association Phenomena, Ellen M. Gerschitz
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study was devised to investigate the developmental syntagmaticparadigmatic word association shift. In syntagmatic associations the stimulus and associative response are of different grammatical form classes and appear to be grammatically continuous, as response may follow stimulus in an utterance (e.g. cat-meows). These are the predominant responses of children before the ages of six to eight. Older children and adults shift to making paradigmatic associations in which stimulus and response are from the same form class and may be substituted for one another in an utterance (e.g. cat-dog). This shift was explained in terms of underlying symbolic mediational processes and …

The Image And The Unconscious, Nancy C. Panagiotou, Anees A. Sheikh
Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
Verbal language has long been the most widely used source of data for clinical inference; recently, however, an increasing number of therapists have turned to images for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. This paper focusses upon the use of mental imagery in analytically oriented therapies. The first segment presents a brief discussion of some important psycholinguistic questions that bear upon the use of images in psychotherapy. The second part discusses the observations of spontaneous images by analytical therapists and shows the relation of these images to linguistic-rational cognition and to unconscious organization. The third section brings out the unique function …
The Relationship Of Verbal Abilities To Cognitive Complexity, Margaret R. Mullins
The Relationship Of Verbal Abilities To Cognitive Complexity, Margaret R. Mullins
Student Work
A view of the person as an individual striving to anticipate, understand, and control his environment was put forth by Kelly (1955) in his Psychology of Personal Constructs, Kelly states that the person looks at the world through "patterns or templates which he creates and then attempts to fit over the realities of which the world is composed" (p. 9). These templates or patterns are termed constructs, and result from the person’s ability to distinguish differences and similarities in the world about him and generalize them to other instances. Constructs are used to predict events and to assess the validity …

The Study Of The Differential Effects Of Visual And Auditory Presentation On Logical Reasoning, Jacob Lauterstein Driesen
The Study Of The Differential Effects Of Visual And Auditory Presentation On Logical Reasoning, Jacob Lauterstein Driesen
Dissertations and Theses
A fundamental task in reasoning is to form some internal representation of the premises that allows the relations between them to be determined. Whether this process is visual or auditory is the subject of a long-standing controversy.
This controversy seems to have reached a stalemate. Another approach is to determine where in the brain reasoning is done. A way of doing this involves looking at differences in the processing and storage of visual and auditory information within the brain. Brooks used this approach in his experiments. His results suggested that a subject who receives spatial information by of the ear …
Albert Bandura And Ellen G. White: A Comparative Study Of Their Concepts Of Behavior Modification Through Modeling, Miriam S. Tumangday
Albert Bandura And Ellen G. White: A Comparative Study Of Their Concepts Of Behavior Modification Through Modeling, Miriam S. Tumangday
Dissertations
Problem. One of the major concerns in education today is the improvement of behavior. Over the years various strategies have been proposed to modify human conduct. A careful review of these theories shows many similarities and divergences. Albert Bandura and Ellen G. White, two proponents from different eras and with widely disparate cultural and intellectual heritage, have strongly recommended modeling or example as the major factor in shaping human behavior. The present study sought to determine what, if any, similarities or differences exist in their modeling concepts.
Procedure. This investigation is a descriptive analytical study concerned with concepts …

Most of the current research in the area of television advertising to children deal entirely with white populations. This exclusion of black subjects exists in spite of an abundance of research in education, sociology and psychology which suggests differences in the socialization of black and white children. The present article reviews major studies of television and children and black versus white child development. The authors conclude with several suggestions for further research.

Development Of The God Concept In Children: An Exploratory Study, Dennis Feeley
Development Of The God Concept In Children: An Exploratory Study, Dennis Feeley
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
A study was designed to explore the developmental relationship between early childhood concepts of parent and more adult concepts of God. It attempted to identify the age at which absolute attributes such as omnipotence and ubiquity are taken away from parents and assigned to God. Based on both the theories of Freud and Piaget it was predicted that the transition will occur between the ages of four and eight. Forty children were administered an interview questionnaire and two short stories all of which depicted an attribute or characteristic which is traditionally viewed as being associated with God. Both techniques were …
The Effects Of Age And Socio-Economic Status On The Diagnosis And Educational Treatment Of Mildly Handicapping Conditions Of School Children, John W. Kelsey
The Effects Of Age And Socio-Economic Status On The Diagnosis And Educational Treatment Of Mildly Handicapping Conditions Of School Children, John W. Kelsey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Biasing effects in labeling and recommendations for educational services when factors of socio-economic status and age are manipulated were studied using 50 certified school psychologists in Utah. Subjects received case report information about IQ, behavior and achievement which described a school child in need of services within one of four conditions, Age 7 Socioeconomic status (SES) High, Age 7 SES Low, Age 13 SES High, and Age 13 SES Low. Other potentially biasing variables such as ethnic background, and sex were held constant. No evidence of bias could be found when dependent measures of labeling, recommendations for educational services, and …
The Effect Of Reinforcers On The Verbal Behavior Of Headstart Children, Deloris Floyd
The Effect Of Reinforcers On The Verbal Behavior Of Headstart Children, Deloris Floyd
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study attempted to assess the effect of a speech contingency reinforcement, administered by an interacting adult, to increase the number of word units uttered during test administration. More specifically, the experiment attempted to see if lower class children when given a reinforcer would take more time in giving elaborated and scorable responses on specific items, thereby raising their score on those items. Their performance was compared to lower class children who were not given the reinforcer. Fifty children from the Warren County 1973 summer Headstart program were used as subjects. The treatment conditions included a control group given no …

A Comparison Of Low And Middle Socio-Economic Status Blacks On Two Measures Of Intelligence, Anthony Young
A Comparison Of Low And Middle Socio-Economic Status Blacks On Two Measures Of Intelligence, Anthony Young
Masters Theses
The testing of persons with highly dissimilar cultural backrounds has received increasing attention since mid-century. In America, the practical problems of cross-cultural testing has been chiefly associated with subcultures or minority cultures within the dominate culture. Havinghurst (1951), in citing cultural differences which may affect intelligence performance named social class among the major types of culture in the U.S. A review of the literature revealed that research is close to unanimous in showing that there are significant differences in intelligence performance of children and youth from different socio-economic backrounds. These findings revealed that children of higher socio-economic status (SES) levels …
