A Comparison Of Oral & Written Verbal Expressions Of Creative Thinking Using The Prose Quantification System, Renee Lane
A Comparison Of Oral & Written Verbal Expressions Of Creative Thinking Using The Prose Quantification System, Renee Lane
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this study was to compare oral and written expressions of creative thinking which took the form of prose, e.g. stories. The Prose Quantification System (PQS) was the instrument of comparison. The PQS is an instrument developed to predict teachers' ratings of the creative quality of written prose. The study investigated the following: (a) interjudge agreement and intrajudge stability for oral and written stories, (b) Teacher Ratings of Story Creativity (TRSC) of oral and written stories, (c) alternate mode (i.e., oral vs. written) equivalence and (d) criterion validity of the PQS.
PQS story-starters (unfinished opening lines to a …
The Relationship Between Individual Differences In Imaginal Ability, Christian Imaginal Frequency, And Christian Spirituality, Michael R. Bressen
The Relationship Between Individual Differences In Imaginal Ability, Christian Imaginal Frequency, And Christian Spirituality, Michael R. Bressen
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
The relationship between the constructs of imaginal ability (vividness and control), Christian imaginal frequency, and Christian spirituality (well-being, maturity, and experience) was investigated. Eighty randomly sampled students from a private Bible college participated in the study. The measures used were the Sheehan (1967) shortened version of the Betts (1909) Questionnaire of Mental Imagery, the Gordon (1949) Test of Visual Imagery Control, updated by Richardson (1969), Ellison and Paloutzian's (Ellison, 1983) Spiritual Well-being Scale, Ellison's (Ellison, Rashid, Patla, Calica & Haberman, 1984) Spiritual Maturity Index, Hood's (1975) Mysticism Scale, and the Christian Use of Imagery Inventory that was specially designed for …

Development Of A Screening Device For Western Conservative Baptist Seminary Using Mmpi Clinical, Research And Subscales, Demographics, Sentence Completion And Seminary Attrition Scale, J. Ross Neder
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
The purpose of this study was to develop a method by which to screen prospective students for the possibility of future adjustment difficulties with seminary life. The final goal for this information is to identify students who would benefit from extra support and guidance. A random sample of 55 male M. Div. students from Western were given the MMPI, Sentence Completion, Seminary Attrition Scale, Demographics and a new scale developed by the author, the Seminary Socialization Scale (SSS) in the spring quarter of 1984. The 20 question SSS correlated in the expected direction with 44 pathology measures on the MMPI …
Cerebral Hemispheric Mechanisms In The Retrieval Of Ambiguous Word Meanings, Roland Curt Burgess
Cerebral Hemispheric Mechanisms In The Retrieval Of Ambiguous Word Meanings, Roland Curt Burgess
Student Work
Targets related to ambiguous primes were projected to the left and right visual fields in a lexical priming experiment with stimulus onset asynchronies (SOA) of 35ms and 750ms. Left hemisphere results were similar to earlier results with central projection (Simpson & Burgess, JEP:HPP, 1985). Facilitation across both SOAs for the more frequent meaning and a decrease in facilitation for the less frequent meaning at the longer SOA. In contrast, right hemisphere results indicated a decay of facilitation for the more frequent meaning at the longer SOA, while activation for the subordinate meaning increased. Results suggest that while automatic processing occurs …

Sex Differences In The Recognition Of Infant Facial Expressions Of Emotion: The Primary Caretaker Hypothesis, Raymond B. Hames, Wayne A. Babchuk
Sex Differences In The Recognition Of Infant Facial Expressions Of Emotion: The Primary Caretaker Hypothesis, Raymond B. Hames, Wayne A. Babchuk
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Although much research has been devoted to studying sex differences In functioning (e.g., Maccoby and Jacklin 1974), most efforts have been directed toward documenting or elucidating the proximate causes of sex differences. Few attempts have been made, however, to explain the ultimate causes of these differences or the selective pressures that have led to the development or psychological differences between males and females [for exception see Symons (1979) and Daly and Wilson (1983)]. Toward this end of blending psychology with evolutionary theory we develop what we call the " primary caretaker hypothesis," which predicts that the sex that through evolutionary …

The Cult Of Empiricism In Psychology, And Beyond, Stephen Toulmin, David E. Leary
The Cult Of Empiricism In Psychology, And Beyond, Stephen Toulmin, David E. Leary
Psychology Faculty Publications
At some stage in it's development, any field of intellectual discussion or scientific speculation may reach a point at which it begins to generate large numbers of "empirical" questions, that is, questions whose answers must refer to carefully documented observations, or even to controlled experiments. In physics, this happened most strikingly in the course of the seventeenth century; in biology, the comparable stage was not reached until around 1770, rising to its peak in the course of the nineteenth century (Toulmin, 1972; Toulmin & Goodfield, 1962); whereas in psychology, it has become customary-though a trifle arbitrary-to argue that this happened …
Effects Of Stimulus Duration On Processing Lateralized Faces, Joseph B. Hellige
Effects Of Stimulus Duration On Processing Lateralized Faces, Joseph B. Hellige
Psychological Science Faculty Works
Observers indicated whether a single probe face presented to the left or right visual field was contained in a positive set of five male faces. In one task the distractor (i.e., negative) stimuli were also male faces, and in another task the distractor stimuli were female faces. For both tasks, reducing stimulus duration from 200 msec to 20 msec increased the percentage of errors, but for neither the percentage of errors nor the reaction time was there any stimulus duration × visual field interaction. In conjunction with earlier experiments using these same tasks, the results indicate that reducing stimulus duration …
Individual Differences In Lateralization Of Cognitive Processes: Type I And Type Ii Processors, Walter Berry Branch
Individual Differences In Lateralization Of Cognitive Processes: Type I And Type Ii Processors, Walter Berry Branch
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
Recent research indicates that the two hemispheres of the human brain serve different functions when processing visual information. Specifically the left hemisphere, for most individuals, is specialized for an analytic or sequential type of processing and the right hemisphere is specialized for a holistic or gestalt type of processing. However this dichotomy is not always found, and it is hypothesized that individual subject differences may partially account for the somewhat inconsistent results in the research literature. The present study attempts to examine the effect of one individual difference dimension upon process lateralization . Subjects were classified into two types, Type …
A Methodology For The Study Of Children's Environmental Knowledge In Other Cultures, Cindi Katz
A Methodology For The Study Of Children's Environmental Knowledge In Other Cultures, Cindi Katz
Publications and Research
This paper presents a methodology which I used to study the content and acquisition of children's environmental knowledge as central to the social reproduction of a rural agricultural economy in the Sudan. My approach was forged drawing on methods of geography, linguistics and anthropology to provide information on (1) how children learn to interact productively with their environment, (2) the nature of their interactions and (3) their knowledge of environmental processes and resources. In this paper I will describe first the methodology adopted including participant observation, ethnosemantic interviews, child-led walks, environmental modeling and "geo-dramas". I will then discuss its use …
A Program To Teach Multiple Verbal Relations Involving A Small Number Of Response Forms, Kimberly Lou Richter
A Program To Teach Multiple Verbal Relations Involving A Small Number Of Response Forms, Kimberly Lou Richter
Masters Theses
As a consequence of reviewing the results of non-behavioral and behavioral approaches to language training for the language deficient, further development of an alternative approach seemed warranted. This study attempted to develop a procedure for training a functional verbal repertoire involving a new language system which consisted of originally meaningless words and symbols. Young "normal" children participated as a first step in developing this procedure. Two preschoolers were taught a few verbal responses, each controlled by several different variables. A new verbal response was then taught under the control of a few variables. Transfer of the new verbal responses under …
The Training Of A Few Response Forms Under Multiple Controlling Variables, Mary-Ann Wiermanski
The Training Of A Few Response Forms Under Multiple Controlling Variables, Mary-Ann Wiermanski
Masters Theses
This study investigated the acquisition of a few response forms under different controlling variables using both a topography based language (TB) (i.e., signing) and a stimulus selection based language (SSB) (i.e., touching symbols) with three language deficient developmentally disabled individuals. The subjects were taught to name, to ask for, and to touch keys that opened boxes that contained some form of reinforcement. Most of the keys' names were trained across more than one set of controlling variables per session. Before training began for a given key under a new condition, a transfer test was conducted, investigating the possibility of stimulus …
Developmental Sentence Scoring: A Comparative Study Conducted In Portland, Oregon, Kathryn Marie Mccluskey
Developmental Sentence Scoring: A Comparative Study Conducted In Portland, Oregon, Kathryn Marie Mccluskey
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this investigation was to replicate the study conducted by Lee and Canter (1971) and Lee (1974a) to determine if a significant difference among the scores in the two studies existed due to geographical location, and to initiate the establishment of norms for the Portland, Oregon geographical area. Forty children, selected on the basis of chronological age (4.0 to 4.11 years), normal receptive vocabulary skills, normal hearing, and a monolingual background, participated as subjects. A language sample of fifty utterances was elicited from each child and analyzed according to the Developmental Sentence Scoring (DSS) procedure.

An Interactional/Social Psychological Approach To Defiance And Therapeutic Paradox, Glenn Thomas Gould
An Interactional/Social Psychological Approach To Defiance And Therapeutic Paradox, Glenn Thomas Gould
Theses and Dissertations
This study tested the general hypothesis that a client's compliance or defiance of a therapeutic directive could be accurately predicted by manipulating the variables of incongruence and dependency within the client-counselor relationship. An attempt to control the relationship variables was made by using a no-choice, paradoxical directive to increase levels of relationship incongruence. The manipulation of the client's perception of their counselor's level of experience and expertness was aimed at controlling the dependency variables. The hypothesis that clients would report improvement of their symptom, following the delivery of a paradoxical directive, was also investigated.
The subjects of the study were …
Effects Of Classroom Setting On Self-Esteem In Learning Disabled Students, Drema G. Moody
Effects Of Classroom Setting On Self-Esteem In Learning Disabled Students, Drema G. Moody
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates the self-esteem of learning disabled students required to attend learning disabilities classes. Subjects were 35 7th- through 9th-grade, male and female learning disabled (LD) students. Nineteen of the subjects attended at least one resource LD class while the other 16 subjects attended mainstream classes. These groups were matched on intelligence quotients (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised) and reading comprehension standard scores (Peabody Individual Achievement Test) so that no significant differences between the groups, on these measures, existed. The Tennessee Self-Concept Scale (Fitts, 1965) was administered to all subjects, along with the closing question, "Does attendance in learning …
Ability To Discriminate And Pronounce Foreign Language Phonemes As A Function Of Age, Maria J. Correa
Ability To Discriminate And Pronounce Foreign Language Phonemes As A Function Of Age, Maria J. Correa
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Fifty native English speakers (ages: 3, 9, 11 and adults) were asked to discriminate and pronounce Spanish words. The Wepman Auditory Discrimination Test was administered to the subjects to assess their discrimination abilities in their native language. A training session using English pairs of words showed that five-year-olds improved in their discrimination abilities after training but three-year-olds did not. Pronunciation was scored by two native Spanish speakers. Analyses revealed that older subjects pronounced the Spanish words significantly better than did younger subjects. Similar results were obtained for the analyses of Spanish phoneme pronunciation. Moreover, analyses of discrimination abilities on the …

Shadowing Interference In A Dichotic Listening Task With Categorized And Uncategorized Word Lists, David Coleman
Shadowing Interference In A Dichotic Listening Task With Categorized And Uncategorized Word Lists, David Coleman
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this thesis was twofold: to investigate the effects of categorized versus uncategorized material on selective attention and to test predictions derived from Filter Theory (Broadbent, 1958), Response Selection Theory (Deutsch and Deutsch, 1963), and Attenuation Theory (Treisman, 1969). Subjects performed a dichotic-listening task in which they shadowed a list of words presented to one ear (i.e., relevant message) while trying to ignore a simultaneously presented list of words on the other ear (i.e., irrelevant message). Lists were 16 words in length and consisted of either categorized words (C) or uncategorized words (U) presented at a rate of …
The Correlation Between Expressive Language Delay In Children And Their Motor Abilities, Gail G. Cunningham
The Correlation Between Expressive Language Delay In Children And Their Motor Abilities, Gail G. Cunningham
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of the present study was to determine the correlation between expressive language delay in children and their gross and fine motor skills. Twenty children five years through six years, eleven months with a diagnosed expressive language delay, were selected to participate in the study. Each was screened on the basis of normal hearing, receptive vocabulary skills, motor functioning, and an expressive language delay of one year or more. After screening procedures, each child was administered the Preschool Language Scale-PLS (Zimmerman, et al., 1969) and the short form of the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency-BOMP (Bruininks, 1978). …
