Experiences Of Latinx Immigrant Parents Of Children With Developmental Disabilities In The Iep Process, Claudia Montoya, Carly Gilson, Valeria Yllades Dec 2022

Experiences Of Latinx Immigrant Parents Of Children With Developmental Disabilities In The Iep Process, Claudia Montoya, Carly Gilson, Valeria Yllades

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

Given the growing proportion of students receiving special education services who are culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD), there is a critical need to understand the experiences of Latinx immigrant parents of children with disabilities. This qualitative study sought to understand the perspectives of nine Latinx immigrant parents of children with developmental disabilities regarding their child's individualized education program (IEP). We conducted semi-structured interviews and analyzed the data using a general inductive approach and constant comparison analysis. Seven themes emerged: (a) parents' insecurity of knowledge, (b) difficult terminology , (c) confusion with the IEP process, (d) discrimination or misconceptions, (e) language …

An Investigation Of Lab-Based Research Procedural Fidelity: The Relationship Between Experimenter Infant-Directed Speech, Temperament And Language Proficiency, Tess A. Simpson Dec 2022

An Investigation Of Lab-Based Research Procedural Fidelity: The Relationship Between Experimenter Infant-Directed Speech, Temperament And Language Proficiency, Tess A. Simpson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether developmental researchers were influenced in the laboratory by the characteristics of children who participate in their research. I hypothesized that experimenters, as social partners, would adapt their speaking and other behaviors to the child’s perceived temperamental profile and language proficiency. I specifically focused on whether experimenters would adhere to the experimental laboratory procedure of two elicited imitation tasks, Feed Bear and Make a Rattle, in an archival dataset. Participants included 61 primarily white 15-month-olds. Coders transcribed infant directed speech (IDS) and analyzed transcriptions for total words, words per sentence, and …

The Cultic Lifecycle: A Thematic Analysis Of Fulfillment And Fear In Cult Membership, Shaelen Grant Dec 2022

The Cultic Lifecycle: A Thematic Analysis Of Fulfillment And Fear In Cult Membership, Shaelen Grant

Student Theses

Prior research on susceptibility to cult recruitment has focused predominately on psychopathological risk factors, such as a prior personality disorder diagnosis and psychiatric and addictive disorders (Feldman & Johnson, 1995; Rousselet et al., 2017). While such studies contribute valuable information, they also inadvertently pathologize cult members. Furthermore, this focus has led to the overlooking of a more crucial question: what basic human desires does cult membership fulfill that cult leaders and recruiters exploit, to recruit and keep members in cults? To address this dearth, research team members interviewed 52 former cult members (N=52) from a variety of groups (e.g., Christian-based, …

A Syndemic Perspective On Anti-Asian Racism And Asian American Mental Health During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Rebecca Mcgarity-Palmer Nov 2022

A Syndemic Perspective On Anti-Asian Racism And Asian American Mental Health During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Rebecca Mcgarity-Palmer

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Asian Americans have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, experiencing COVID-related anti-Asian racism as well as exacerbated pandemic-related stressors, such as increased negative mental health symptoms and economic challenges, due to existing structural inequities. Asian Americans are a diverse group made up of various ethnic and cultural groups with differential impacts from the pandemic. Examining differences within Asian Americans is therefore important to further understand the impacts of health inequities, economic challenges, and racism. Using a large, national dataset, I conducted three studies that examine Asian Americans’ experiences of anti-Asian racism, negative mental health symptoms, and economic challenges within …

Organizational Involvement Type And First-Generation College Student Persistence: A Survival Analysis With Time-Varying Covariates, Jordan Reed Nov 2022

Organizational Involvement Type And First-Generation College Student Persistence: A Survival Analysis With Time-Varying Covariates, Jordan Reed

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Social integration into the university is the most critical factor in predicting persistence for students, including first-generation college students. Yet social integration takes many forms. Researchers theorize that academic-oriented and marginalized-identity focused organizations have uniquely positive relationships with persistence for students generally. Yet other theorists consider organizational involvement to be an insufficient means of integration and persistence at a student’s institution. This dissertation compares these organization types and others to understand their relationships with first-generation students’ degree persistence. This analysis was conducted with a sample of 304 students from three institutions. Additionally, while longitudinal methods are inherent to persistence studies …

Does Working Memory Predict Preference To Use Inherent Explanations In Scientific Observations? A Bayesian Item Response Theory Approach, Sepideh Namvarrad Nov 2022

Does Working Memory Predict Preference To Use Inherent Explanations In Scientific Observations? A Bayesian Item Response Theory Approach, Sepideh Namvarrad

Theses - ALL

Understanding the cognitive processes that help people generate explanations is one of the fundamental questions in cognitive science and philosophy. In this study, we try to examine the extent to which working memory capacity can predict peoples’ preference for scientific explanations under uncertainty. Specifically, we distinguish between possible explanations in terms of their focus on inherent vs. extrinsic entities associated with an observation. According to past findings, inherent vs. extrinsic properties of a phenomenon are different in terms of the ease of accessibility for cognitive processes. The results of this research indicate a significant association between people’s tendencies to choose …

Linguistic Competence And Bicultural Identity: Mutually (Re)Enforcing Or Compensatory Mechanisms For Acculturation?, Łukasz Kmiotek

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The article describes a cross-cultural study comparing bicultural identity and bilingualism of first-generation Poles and high school students in the Rhône Alpes Region (France), high school students in Brussels (Belgium) as well as Polish university students of French language and culture in Poland. The study results portray the contrast between Polish students and three other groups acculturating abroad so that French identity appears stronger than Polish among the university students, and Polish identity stronger than French among the migrants. Secondly, acculturative context (home vs host country) is a moderator between Polish-French bilingualism and bicultural identity. Results are discussed in the …

Interpretation Of Grammatical Gender Among English Monolingual Speakers, Diego De Gregorio Nov 2022

Interpretation Of Grammatical Gender Among English Monolingual Speakers, Diego De Gregorio

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

This research project aimed to discover how English monolingual speakers interpret the idea of grammatical gender, and if they have an innate bias toward associating common English nouns to the masculine gender. My hypothesis was that participants would assign a masculine grammatical gender to words at a greater than chance due to an existent internalized genderism/sexism within the participants. To gather data, a Qualtrics survey was designed to test participants. Said survey was limited to people who only speak English and contained 10 different common nouns. After the presentation of each noun, participants were given two options: masculine or feminine. …

Adjustment Of Refugees In Greece As A Social Identity Process: A Longitudinal Study, Angelos Panagiotopoulos, Irene Giovanetti, Vassilis Pavlopoulos Nov 2022

Adjustment Of Refugees In Greece As A Social Identity Process: A Longitudinal Study, Angelos Panagiotopoulos, Irene Giovanetti, Vassilis Pavlopoulos

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Many refugees moving into Greece and other European countries often struggle to adjust to their new life. Over and above other factors, social isolation seems to be a major contributor in their poor adjustment outcomes, yet the underlying psychological mechanisms of their links are not well understood. Based on the Social Identity Model of Identity Change, we conceptualized refugees’ adjustment as a major life transition that depends on (i) the maintenance of existing pre-migratory group memberships (social identity continuity pathway), (ii) the development of new post-migratory social identities (social identity gain pathway), and (iii) the perceived compatibility between pre- and …

A Cross Cultural Perspective Of Adherence For Racial/Ethnic Minority Women With Hiv, Living In The United States, Lunthita M. Duthely, Olga Villar-Loubet, Sneha Akurati, Alex P. Sanchez Covarrubias Nov 2022

A Cross Cultural Perspective Of Adherence For Racial/Ethnic Minority Women With Hiv, Living In The United States, Lunthita M. Duthely, Olga Villar-Loubet, Sneha Akurati, Alex P. Sanchez Covarrubias

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

HIV persists as a global public health tragedy, as more than 36 million lives have been lost to HIV/AIDS. A diagnosis of HIV can be treated as a chronic disease, for those who adhere to their medication regimens and other health recommendations. However, for racial/ethnic minorities living in the United States, many of whom face a multitude of barriers, adherence to medications and medical appointments can be a challenge. For racial/ethnic minority women, specifically, gender roles, HIV stigma, racism, inconsistent access to healthcare, financial and food insecurity are just a few of the barriers they experience, which may interfere with …

The Proximal Zone Of Intercultural Development (Pzid), Rachid Oulahal

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

This article presents results from a comparative analysis of intercultural experiences between French and Singaporean participants. A set of questions was proposed online in order to identify temporalities of an intercultural experience (early and late interculturation) as well as the level of this experience (intrapsychic, intersubjective and intergroup interculturation). Our sample consists of 246 participants (144 in France and 102 in Singapore). France and Singapore were chosen as research fields because of their difference in terms of cultural difference management: a universalist cultural model for France and a pluralist cultural model for Singapore.

A quantitative analysis allows us to identify …

How Collective Childcare Arrangements Are Sustained In Rural China During Socioeconomic Transformation, Xue Jiang Nov 2022

How Collective Childcare Arrangements Are Sustained In Rural China During Socioeconomic Transformation, Xue Jiang

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The ecological theory of cultural change suggests that socioeconomic development enhances individualism and weakens collectivism. Yet, collectivism in terms of childcare arrangements seems to persist in rapidly transforming China. It is possible that Confucian ideals and rural to urban migration promoted kin-based cooperation and enhanced collectivism. To explore such possibilities, forty-five caregivers of two generations from an ethnic village located in the Southwest of China were invited to share their childcare arrangements, priorities, and histories. Iterative thematic analyses revealed that improved life quality allowed caregivers the time and resources to attend to children’s personal well-being, whilst socioeconomic potentials and limitations …

More Than Yes And No: Predicting The Magnitude Of Non-Invariance Between Countries From Systematic Features, Johannes A. Karl, Ronald Fischer Nov 2022

More Than Yes And No: Predicting The Magnitude Of Non-Invariance Between Countries From Systematic Features, Johannes A. Karl, Ronald Fischer

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Measurement Invariance has long been the cornerstone of cross-cultural comparisons. Nevertheless, over time a research tradition has developed in which invariance tests are applied with the stated end goal of finding invariance between measures and an implicit view that non-invariance is a barrier to cross-cultural research. In the current paper we aim to challenge this view and urge researchers to consider non-invariance critically not as barrier, but as opportunity for cross-cultural research. Specifically, we show how invariance effect sizes of items can be used to understand psychometric distances between countries and formulate novel hypotheses on cultural differences. Using a previously …

The Influence Of Language On Thematic Apperception Test Assessment Of Defenses In International Spanish-Speaking College Students, Ilenia Perez-Palen Nov 2022

The Influence Of Language On Thematic Apperception Test Assessment Of Defenses In International Spanish-Speaking College Students, Ilenia Perez-Palen

Theses and Dissertations

Cultural influences, including the use of language, have been shown to affect personality development and are also likely to impact personality assessment results. The influence of language is particularly relevant in story-telling measures such as the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT; Morgan & Murray, 1935). The purpose of this study was to analyze TAT narratives delivered in English and Spanish to assess the application of defense mechanisms based on the Defense Mechanism Manual (DMM; Cramer, 1991) among Hispanic international students. No study to date has provided insight into Hispanic individuals’ use of language with the TAT, specifically on scores for the …

Cognitive Effort Avoidance In Veterans With Suicide Attempt Histories, James M. Bjork, Chelsea S. Rooney, Lisa K. Straub, David M. N. Garavito, Andrew Westbrook Nov 2022

Cognitive Effort Avoidance In Veterans With Suicide Attempt Histories, James M. Bjork, Chelsea S. Rooney, Lisa K. Straub, David M. N. Garavito, Andrew Westbrook

Articles

Suicide attempts (SA) are increasing in the United States, especially in veterans. Discovering individual cognitive features of the subset of suicide ideators who attempt suicide is critical. Cognitive theories attribute SA to facile schema-based negative interpretations of environmental events. Over-general autobiographical memory and facile solutions in problem solving tasks in SA survivors suggest that aversion to expending cognitive effort may be a neurobehavioral marker of SA risk. In veterans receiving care for mood disorder, we compared cognitive effort discounting and evidence-gathering in a beads task between veterans with (SAHx+; n = 26) versus without (SAHx-; n = 22) a history …

The Effect Of Experiential Avoidance And Committed Action On The Relationship Between Anxiety And Quality Of Life In Chronically Ill And Healthy Students, Rufaida Mohammed N Alkhanji

Theses

Chronic illness and anxiety are two factors that have been shown to negatively impact quality of life. In order to better understand the impact of chronic illness on quality of life, researchers have been interested in studying the effects of experiential avoidance and committed action. This thesis aims to examine the roles of experiential avoidance and committed action as potential mediators in the relationship between anxiety and quality of life. It also aims to compare the occurrence of the studied relationships in students with and without chronic illness. 547 participants from two Arab universities completed self-report measures assessing their levels …

Applying Positive Psychology’S Subjective Well-Being To Online Interactions, Nicole Delellis, Dominique Kelly, Liu Yifan, Alex Mayhew, Yimin Chen, Victoria Rubin, Sarah Cornwell Oct 2022

Applying Positive Psychology’S Subjective Well-Being To Online Interactions, Nicole Delellis, Dominique Kelly, Liu Yifan, Alex Mayhew, Yimin Chen, Victoria Rubin, Sarah Cornwell

Data and Test Instruments

This paper outlines the complexity of the psychological construct of individuals' subjective well-being (SWB) and argues for the importance of examining behaviours and linguistic expression of individuals online social interactions in relation to self-reported SWB. This paper calls for a systematic review of the psychology research which examines SWB and its association with various character strengths, personality traits, and behaviours. While the Big Five personality traits (OCEAN) have an underlying neuropsychological basis and are considered as universal dimensions of personality along which humans differ one from another, minimal research has attempted to evaluate the relationship between personality traits, SWB, and …

Understanding Self-Compassion Within Narrative Identity: The Struggles Of Japanese Students With Measuring Up, Anton Sevilla-Liu Oct 2022

Understanding Self-Compassion Within Narrative Identity: The Struggles Of Japanese Students With Measuring Up, Anton Sevilla-Liu

The Qualitative Report

The psychology of self-compassion is growing in importance for understanding well-being and helping people in therapeutic and educational settings. However, present research may be limited by a narrow focus on nomothetic self-reports like the Self-Compassion Scale. This article supplements that qualitatively, looking at self-compassion in life stories. It is guided by the questions, “How do students experience the struggle between self-compassion and its deficit? And how is this experience manifest in their narrative identity?” This study examined three Japanese university students who submitted their narrative self-reflections, including stories of the high point, low point, turning point, and recurring pattern in …

Trauma In The American Asylum Process: Experiences Of Immigrant Families Under The Migrant Protection Protocols, Alfonso Mercado, Amanda Venta, Frances Morales, Amanda Palomin, Luz M. Garcini, Michelle Silva, Melanie M. Domenech Rodriguez

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

Objective:

Latinx asylum-seeking families report posttraumatic distress that is 161–204% higher than in non-immigrants, with adverse consequences for health and well-being. Recent U.S. policies have further embedded trauma in the asylum-seeking process by forcing families to remain in Mexico, enduring dire living conditions in tent encampments near the border while awaiting processing. These families are now entering the United States in large numbers. This article sheds light on their recent experiences and mental health needs, using a mixed methods-grounded theory design, presenting quantitative and qualitative data to describe the experiences of six asylum-seeking families who waited for 1–2 years in …

Psychometric Properties Of The Dyadic Coping Inventory (Dci), Amorita Christella Anggamsari, Fitri Andriani Oct 2022

Psychometric Properties Of The Dyadic Coping Inventory (Dci), Amorita Christella Anggamsari, Fitri Andriani

International Conference on Assessment and Learning (ICAL)

A survey conducted by The Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics (Badan Pusat Statistik/BPS Indonesia) last year has found that the divorce rate in Indonesia had increased up to 53,50% compared to the data in 2020, and more than half of the divorce cases happened because of “unsolved conflicts between couples”. Out of various studies on marital or romantic relationships done internationally, it suggests that dyadic coping could be the protective factor in the relationship between stress and the couples’ well-being. According to a meta-analysis study held in 2015 along with systematic literature reviews published in 2019 and 2022 regarding the …

A Mixed Methodological Examination Of Older Adults’ Psychological Reactance Toward Caregiving Messages From Their Adult Children, Hannah Ball, Keith Weber, Alan K. Goodboy, Christine E. Kunkle, Christa L. Lilly, Scott A. Myers Oct 2022

A Mixed Methodological Examination Of Older Adults’ Psychological Reactance Toward Caregiving Messages From Their Adult Children, Hannah Ball, Keith Weber, Alan K. Goodboy, Christine E. Kunkle, Christa L. Lilly, Scott A. Myers

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

This study extends psychological reactance theory (PRT) to family caregiving by exploring autonomy-threatening messages adult child caregivers use to gain compliance from older adult parents. Results of focus groups and interviews with older adult care recipients (Study One) and caregivers (Study Two) corroborated three types of autonomy-threatening messages, which were used to test PRT (Study Three). Older adults (N = 281) were randomly assigned a caregiving message and answered reactance-related survey questions. Results supported serial mediation: relative to an autonomy-supporting message, two types of autonomy-threatening messages (i.e., offering directives, expressing doubt) triggered greater freedom threat, which amplified reactance. In …

Surveying The Stigma: How The Plhiv Stigma Index Acts As A Validated Framework To Measure Healthcare Discrimination And How It Can Be Adapted To Quantify Mental Health Stigma, Keeley Lariviere Oct 2022

Surveying The Stigma: How The Plhiv Stigma Index Acts As A Validated Framework To Measure Healthcare Discrimination And How It Can Be Adapted To Quantify Mental Health Stigma, Keeley Lariviere

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The PLHIV Stigma Index is an ongoing, international study conducted by and for people living with HIV to measure the stigmatization that people living with HIV experience. As a model that has been proven successful in translating to targeted advocacy campaigns, this paper theorizes on how this Stigma Index could be broadened to capture other aspects of healthcare discrimination. With a growing demand for mental health support and a critically underdeveloped mental healthcare framework, understanding the stigma and discrimination that exist for people living with depression is a good place to start. Using mixed methods analysis from existing literature and …
