A Comparison Of The Effects Of Biofeedback And Meditation Treatment On Essential Hypertension, Thomas Lee Molatore Mar 1979

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Biofeedback And Meditation Treatment On Essential Hypertension, Thomas Lee Molatore

Dissertations and Theses

The repeated-measures experimental design utilized in the present study permitted a controlled comparison of the clinical efficacy of meditation treatment (MT), biofeedback treatment (BT), and pharmacological control (PC) conditions in the reduction of seven dependent variables: (1) within clinic (W-C) systolic blood pressure (SBP), (2) W-C diastolic blood pressure (DBP), (3) outside-clinic (O-C) SEP, (4) O-C DBP, (5) within-session (W-S) SEP, (6) W-S DBP, and (7) antihypertensive medication requirements. Twenty-four medicated subjects with medically .verified essential hypertension were matched by rank-order on sex, age, and mean baseline levels of SBP and DBP, and randomly assigned to MT, BT, or PC …

Masculinity-Femininity As Related To Performance On The Wais M-F Index, Christine Apodaca Muehlenweg Mar 1979

Masculinity-Femininity As Related To Performance On The Wais M-F Index, Christine Apodaca Muehlenweg

Psychology ETDs

A great deal of past research has focused on the differences between males and females within our society. In particular, cognitive differences have been studied extensively. Males have been found to perform significantly better than do females on tasks involving spatial, numerical, and mechanical abilities, whereas females are often found to perform better than do males on tasks involving verbal abilities and social relations. A large number of researchers have attempted, with varying degrees of success, to relate differential performance in these areas to differences in masculine versus feminine orientation. The present study attempts to relate masculinity-femininity to differential performance …

Assessment Of Long-Term Effects Of Early Social Isolation: Effects Of Continuous Social Contact, Robert George Frank Mar 1979

Assessment Of Long-Term Effects Of Early Social Isolation: Effects Of Continuous Social Contact, Robert George Frank

Psychology ETDs

The long-term effects of early social isolation in rhesus monkeys have been assumed to be highly similar to those found in young, subadult isolation reared monkeys. Typical methodologies involved the observation of social behavior during brief "encounter" tests. Recent evidence suggests that this procedure may well have obscured important developmental effects. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the social behavior repetoires of fully adult, differentially reared, rhesus monkeys in brief encounter and continuous social contact environmental situations. In a previous study, six monkeys reared for the first 9 months of life in total social isolation, and six …

A Content Analysis Of The Portrayal Of The Emotionally Disturbed In Books Popular With Adolescents, Judith A. Heusinkveld Jan 1979

A Content Analysis Of The Portrayal Of The Emotionally Disturbed In Books Popular With Adolescents, Judith A. Heusinkveld

Graduate Research Papers

The major purposes of this research were to analyze the portrayal of emotionally disturbed characters in books which adolescents are reading and to attempt to determine if this portrayal was realistic and balanced in terms of the entire group of books. A panel of experts was used to obtain a sample of ten books. The portrayals of twelve characters from these ten books were analyzed using an inventory of twelve elements which were derived from traditional stereotypes of the emotionally disturbed. The results of this analysis suggested that, for the most part, a realistic and generally balanced portrayal of emotionally …

The Extent Of Visual Form Integration, Mark Thomas Kinnucan Jan 1979

The Extent Of Visual Form Integration, Mark Thomas Kinnucan

Psychology ETDs

The two major theories of masking that have been introduced are integration theory and interruption theory. According to integration theory, visual masking occurs when the target and the mask form an uninterpretable montage. In its simplest form, interruption theory argues that the visual representation of the mask replaces that of the target. The weight of evidence against this form of the theory suggests that a more limited version is more viable. Some evidence has been found for the disruption of integration, which has been called discontinuity detection.

The Relationship Of Lateral Eye Movements To Field-Dependence-Independence And Verbal And Performance Skills, Linda J. Stennett-Mason Jan 1979

The Relationship Of Lateral Eye Movements To Field-Dependence-Independence And Verbal And Performance Skills, Linda J. Stennett-Mason

Masters Theses

Lateral eye movements and handedness as indexes of hemisphere asymmetry were compared to field-dependence-independence, as measured by Rod-and-Frame Test errors, and to Wechsler Verbal and Performance IQs. Consistent with previous research, the hypotheses predicted that persons with inconsistent lateral eye movements (ambilaterality) would have greater Rod-and-Frame errors (field-dependence) and lower Wechsler Verbal and Performance IQs.

Subjects were 41 male undergraduates who were grouped according to their lateral eye movements in response to 20 reflective questions consisting of ten verbal (left-hemisphere) and ten spatial (right-hemisphere) questions. The response scoring resulted in 12 subjects with 70% or more lateral eye movements to …

Locus Of Control Modification As A Function Of Situational Control And Performance Feedback, Robert Bailey Allin Jr. Jan 1979

Locus Of Control Modification As A Function Of Situational Control And Performance Feedback, Robert Bailey Allin Jr.

Master's Theses

The present investigation explored the effects of personal control (skill instruction), no personal control (chance instruction), "success," and "failure" as independent variables in a task situation which might influence a change in subjects control orientations. 70 college subjects were randomly assigned to one of six experimental groups and a control group, and were tested for their locus of control orientations on the Rotter I-E scale both before and after participation in an original task situation and answering additional rating questions. Results indicate that significant interactive effects existed between locus of control orientation and successful task performance in task situations with …

A Comparative Study Of Computer-Assisted Instruction Versus Classroom Training Of Naval Technicians Of Varying Aptitude Levels, Daniel J. Dwyer Jan 1979

A Comparative Study Of Computer-Assisted Instruction Versus Classroom Training Of Naval Technicians Of Varying Aptitude Levels, Daniel J. Dwyer

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Any discussion of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) cannot proceed very far without first examining the issue of programmed instruction (PI). CAI is a relatively recent development in the area of education and training, whereas PI enjoys a somewhat longer history. Nonetheless, PI lies at the very heart of CAI and forms the base on which CAI exists. CAI then, may be viewed as a mode or type of PI. B. F. Skinner's work in the 1940's with the principles of operant conditioning laid the groundwork for the concept of PI (Garner, 1966). Operant conditioning is a type of conditioning whereby an …

Emg Biofeedback As A Generalized Relaxation Technique, David Cunningham Jan 1979

Emg Biofeedback As A Generalized Relaxation Technique, David Cunningham

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Ten college students serving as volunteer subjects were randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group received EMG biofeedback training using feedback from the frontalis muscle only, and the other group received EMG biofeedback training using feedback from several muscle sites. It was hypothesized that subjects who were given EMG biofeedback relaxation training sequentially from several muscle sites would be able to lower EMG levels at these sites to a significantly greater degree than subjects who received EMG biofeedback relaxation training using feedback from the frontalis muscle only. Both groups were given a pre-training baseline session, nine training sessions, …

Theory And Practice Of Integrated Psychology, Marjorie L. Rand Jan 1979

Theory And Practice Of Integrated Psychology, Marjorie L. Rand

Theses

Marjorie L. Rand’s Theory and Practice of Integrated Psychotherapy explores a holistic approach to therapy that unifies the body, mind, emotions, and spirit. Drawing from Gestalt therapy, Reichian therapy, movement therapy, breath awareness, and meditation, Rand presents a flexible and adaptive therapeutic model that prioritizes self-awareness and personal growth.

The thesis challenges the traditional medical and psychological models, which often treat the mind and body as separate entities. Instead, Rand argues for an integrative approach where energy flows freely, reducing psychological and physical distress. She discusses the role of energy healing, the chakra system, and bodywork as essential components of …

The Measurement Of Self-Preoccupation, Steven W. Noles Jan 1979

The Measurement Of Self-Preoccupation, Steven W. Noles

Honors Theses

In recent years, there has been an increasing amount of interest in research on the extent and manner in which a person views him/herself in various settings. Some refer to this as self-preoccupation (Sarason, 1975, 1978; Wine, 1971), while others call it self-awareness, a state (Duval and Wicklund, 1972) or self-consciousness, a trait, (Buss and Scheier, 1976). It has been hypothesized that human consciousness is bidirectional; that is, it can be focused inward to the self or outward to the external environment (Bandura, 1977). There is some research and theory that suggests that the focus of this attention, influences the …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Visual Short Term Memory And Speechreading In Hearing Impaired Geriatrics, Catherine Hollevoet

Dissertations and Theses

The relationship between visual short term memory (as measured by the Memory for Designs Test) and speechreading ability (as measured by the Barley Speechreading Test) was investigated in a sample of twenty-seven hearing impaired geriatrics. Correlation analysis verified a statistically significant relationship between Memory for Designs Test scores and Barley Speechreading Test scores. Partial correlation revealed the relationship between speechreading scores and short term memory scores was rot influenced significantly by variance in chronological age or speech discrimination ability. Memory for Designs Test scores were shown to be accurate predictors of scores achieved on the Barley Speechreading Test.

The Relationship Of Maternal Childrearing Practices To Prosocial Behavior And Resistance To Temptation In Preschool Children, Jennifer Anne Deck Jennings Jan 1979

The Relationship Of Maternal Childrearing Practices To Prosocial Behavior And Resistance To Temptation In Preschool Children, Jennifer Anne Deck Jennings

Dissertations and Theses

Preschool children's prosocial behavior and resistance to temptation were examined in relation to maternal childbearing practices. Forty-seven children and their mothers participated in the study. At a play session at the child's day care center, each child was given opportunities to behave prosocially, i.e., to help, share, teach, or exhibit sympathy, and to resist temptation, i.e., refrain from playing with an attractive but forbidden toy. Mothers of these children were individually interviewed and given a questionnaire developed for this study.

An Examination Of Intellectual Functioning, School Achievement, And Personality Characteristics Of Male Juvenile Delinquents, Robert A. Rymer Jan 1979

An Examination Of Intellectual Functioning, School Achievement, And Personality Characteristics Of Male Juvenile Delinquents, Robert A. Rymer

Theses and Dissertations

Research in the area of juvenile delinquency has reported personality and background differences between delinquents who have committed certain types of offenses (Randolph, l96l; Mizushima and DeVos, 1967). The major purpose of this study was to examine the academic characteristics of certain classifications of delinquent offenders. Specifically, the incidences of three school-related problems and absence of any of these problems were compared for certain classifications of offenders. The comparisons that were made were group versus individual offenses, person versus property offenses, and actual aggressors versus threatened aggressors. A second aspect of the study involved a comparative investigation of the personality …

Reaction To Social Pressure From Adults Versus Peers Among Mexican, Mexican-American, And Anglo-American Rural Children, Ana Maria C. Donini

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this project was to investigate whether there was a significant difference in the adherence to conventional morality and the reaction to social pressure from adults versus peers among Mexican, Mexican-American, and Anglo-American children. The instrument used was the Moral Dilemmas Test (MDT) developed by Bronfenbrenner, Devereux, Suci, and Rodgers, which measures the reported readiness of children to engage in morally disapproved behavior and their reaction to social pressure exerted by adults and peers. The subjects were asked to respond to a series of conflict situations under three experimental conditions of confidentiality, scrutiny by parents, and scrutiny by …

Mother And Infant At Play: Reciprocity In Gazing Behavior, Goldie Alfasi-Siffert Jan 1979

Mother And Infant At Play: Reciprocity In Gazing Behavior, Goldie Alfasi-Siffert

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Twenty mothers and their 3-month-old male infants were studied in an attempt to isolate and describe some of the motivational components that contribute to infant gaze. Infants were videotaped in two conditions: playing with mother and playing with a female stranger. The videotapes were then analyzed on a second-by-second basis with respect to infant gaze and a variety of maternal/stranger behaviors. Results show that infants spend more time gazing at the stranger than at mother and that looks at the stranger are of much longer duration. In addition, high levels of infant gaze tend to be associated with facial and …

Intelligence And Nonintelligence Factors Contributing To Scores On The Rorschach Prognostic Rating Scale, Anneke P. Hathaway Dec 1978

Intelligence And Nonintelligence Factors Contributing To Scores On The Rorschach Prognostic Rating Scale, Anneke P. Hathaway

Dissertations and Theses

Correlation between the RPRS total and WAIS FSIQ showed that approximately 43% of the variance in the RPRS total can be accounted for by the variance in the FSIQ. Verbal IQ is not significantly higher correlated with the RPRS total than the Performance IQ (p < .10). Factor analysis of the 6 RPRS subscores resulted in 2 factors. Subsequent factor analysis of the 6 RPRS subscores plus FSIQ and the factor analysis of the 6 RPRS subscores plus PIQ and VIQ showed the first factor to be an intelligence factor accounting for 85% of the common variance. The RPRS variables FL, FM, M and Sh loaded on this factor. The second factor was a nonintelligence factor accounting for 15% of the common variance. Small m is clearly the main determinant of this factor followed by Sh. In addition, the results of 2 exploratory factor analyses are discussed. The first exploratory factor analysis involved 23 variables, namely the 6 RPRS subscores, RPRS total, the 11 WAIS subscales, FSIQ, VIQ, PIQ, VIS and OABD. The second exploratory analysis involved 17 variables, namely the 6 RPRS subscores and the 11 WAIS subscales.

The Effect Of Multiple Electroconvulsive Shocks Upon Rotational Activity In Rats, Thomas Lee Hall Dec 1978

The Effect Of Multiple Electroconvulsive Shocks Upon Rotational Activity In Rats, Thomas Lee Hall

Psychology ETDs

Multiple ECS treatments were administered to rats in order to assess the effects of electroshock upon rotational behavior. Since CA systems have a demonstrated role in the determination of rotational activity, alterations in behavioral asymmetry would suggest underlying changes in the intrinsic asymmetry of CA projections. If ECS, in turn, were to alter CA function, then one would expect ECS to also alter rotational asymmetry. In order to test this hypothesis, animals were given ECS daily for eight consecutive days. Measures of amphetamine-induced rotational activity were obtained from each animal prior to the first shock treatment and forty-eight hours following …

The Effects Of Anticipated Evaluation On Individual Brainstorming Performance, Barbara Kane Maginn Dec 1978

The Effects Of Anticipated Evaluation On Individual Brainstorming Performance, Barbara Kane Maginn

Psychology ETDs

Experimental investigations of the relative effectiveness of group versus individual brainstorming procedures have consistently reported the finding of individual brainstorming superiority. Several hypotheses concerning the nature of the inhibitory factor or factors operating in the group situation have been postulated. One which has been mentioned frequently involves postulation of the presence of anticipated evaluation in brainstorming groups. That is, it has been hypothesized that group members may believe that other members will evaluate critically ideas which they produce. As a result, freewheeling production of ideas may be suppressed in the group context. The present study manipulated different conditions of anticipated …

Parental Perception Of The Neonate, Liza Ann Webb Dec 1978

Parental Perception Of The Neonate, Liza Ann Webb

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine maternal and paternal perceptions of the neonate. The Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory was used to measure perception.

Thirty couples who delivered normal, healthy, first-born infants at a Naval Hospital in San Diego volunteered for the study. Consent forms were signed during the hospital stay and the Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory was administered to both parents in the homes when the infants were one month old.

Statistical analysis of data showed that mothers and fathers did rate their one-month-old infants as above the average infant using the Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory. The range …
