Effects Of Labels On Recognition Memory For Ambiguous Visual Forms, Marvin Charles Mccallum
Effects Of Labels On Recognition Memory For Ambiguous Visual Forms, Marvin Charles Mccallum
Psychology ETDs
Memory for visual forms can be assessed in two separate ways. The most common approach is to assess the degree to which a form is accurately remembered. A less common approach is to assess the type and degree of change in form memory. The present experiment investigated the role of a single suggestive label in affecting both accuracy and qualitative change of recognition memory for ambiguous visual forms. Each of 240 subjects was briefly shown a single ambiguous form which represented the geometrical average of the anatomical characteristics of the two animal forms used to construct it. Just prior to …
The Influence Of Alexander Bain And Herbert Spencer Upon William James, David D. Nelson
The Influence Of Alexander Bain And Herbert Spencer Upon William James, David D. Nelson
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates the influence of Alexander Bain (1818-1903) and Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) upon William James (1842-1910). James is generally considered to be the foremost American psychologist and the one who "introduced" experimental psychology to the United States. James had become familiar with the psychological writings of Bain and Spencer early in his career, and he used Spencer's The Principles of Psychology and later Bain's The Senses and the Intellect and The Emotions and the Will as textbooks for his course in psychology at Harvard. Bain was foremost English psychologist at that time, and Spencer was widely known as a …
The Effects Of Alcohol And Expectancy On Fantasy And Aggression In Male Social Drinkers, Michael R. Rodriguez
The Effects Of Alcohol And Expectancy On Fantasy And Aggression In Male Social Drinkers, Michael R. Rodriguez
Psychology ETDs
Research has indicated a complex relationship between alcohol and aggression involving personality as well as situational variables. Recently it has been found that expectancy of receiving alcohol has a more potent effect (on many behavioral measures including aggression) than does actual receipt of alcohol. In addition, alcohol has been found to increase power fantasies in males, leading many researchers to associate power fantasies with powerful actions such as aggression. The present study examined the effects of alcohol and expectancy upon aggression and power fantasies in male social drinkers. In the first phase of the study, 30 male college students over …
Use Of A Modified Instruction Set For The Mmpi With Heroin Addicts, Michael A. Glazer
Use Of A Modified Instruction Set For The Mmpi With Heroin Addicts, Michael A. Glazer
Psychology ETDs
The study proposes that experiences caused by direct drug action and the unusual pressures of obtaining the illegal drug heroin greatly affect heroin addict MMPI responding. These drug-related experiences confound MMPI profile data by introducing a variable not related to personality dynamics or personality traits. An associated confounding variable is the amount of time between cessation of heroin use and the administration of the MMPI. The longer this time period the less the effect of drug-related experiences upon MMPI responding, as the heroin addicts forget some of their drug-related experiences and respond as appropriate to their present life experiences. The …
Effects Of Cognition Training On Locus Of Control (Lc), Weight Reduction, And Problem Solving Ability, Lisa Buckmaster
Effects Of Cognition Training On Locus Of Control (Lc), Weight Reduction, And Problem Solving Ability, Lisa Buckmaster
Dissertations and Theses
Weight control is an area of research which continues to generate attention in an endeavor to find the most effective and long lasting weight loss methods. In the realm of the behavioral modification of weight control, emphasis has been given to the impact of external stimuli on eating behavior. Less well researched are internal stimuli, that is, cognitive events, feelings, and thoughts which influence eating habits. The literature on obesity has yet to empirically differentiate the effects of the cognitive and external factors on weight control. A cognitive restructuring approach to weight reduction was hypothesized to be the more effective …

Psychological Androgyny & Gender Attribution To Hypothetical Persons, Deanna Mader
Psychological Androgyny & Gender Attribution To Hypothetical Persons, Deanna Mader
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Previous research concerning sex-role stereotyping, psychological androgyny, and mental health as it relates both to sex-role stereotyping and androgyny was reviewed. The literature indicated the need for a reevaluation of mental health standards with regard to sex-role stereotypes. The present study attempted to approach this need by examining the relationship between psychological androgyny and attitudes toward sex-role stereotyping. It was hypothesized that androgynous individuals would be more likely than other individuals to state that a hypothetical person possessing a specific set of traits could be either male or female. IL was anticipated that this would be true regardless of the …
Invasions Of Personal Space: A Field Experiment, Lisa Demian
Invasions Of Personal Space: A Field Experiment, Lisa Demian
Dissertations and Theses
The present study examined the relationship between invasions of personal space and measures of glancing, blocking, leaning, head-shoulder orientation, movement away from the invader, and flight latency. These behaviors have been described in previous studies as occurring in response to spatial invasions, and the equilibrium model proposed to account for their occurrence. Hypotheses consistent with this model were tested in a 2 x 2 x 3 design which varied sex of invader, sex of subject and distance of subject from invader (1 foot, 2 feet, or 5 feet). None of the predicted relationships obtained, although females blocked more frequently than …
Comparison Of The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test And The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale In School Age Children, Stephen Skiles
Comparison Of The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test And The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale In School Age Children, Stephen Skiles
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The correlate relationships and directionality and magnitude of mean differences between MAs and IQs of the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and Revised Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale (both 1960 and 1972 norms) were investigated in a sample of 225 school age children. It was found that MAs of two instruments were more highly correlated than the IQs. For the total sample, no significant differences were found between mean MAs of the two instruments. The correlation between PPVT and the 1960 Revised Stanford-Binet IQs and the correlation between PPVT and 1972 Revised Stanford-Binet IQs were found to be identical. The PPVT was found …

Cerebral Lateralization And Cognitive Function, C. Mark Borgstrom
Cerebral Lateralization And Cognitive Function, C. Mark Borgstrom
Student Work
Eighty-seven undergraduate students were given the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory, two dichotic listening tasks, and a paired-associate task to assess the relationship between visuo-spatial/verbal abilities and cerebral lateralization. It was hypothesized that well lateralized subjects, as measured by the handedness inventory and dichotic listening tasks, would score higher in the visual imagery condition of the pairedassociate task than less well lateralized subjects * and would score about the same as the less well lateralized subjects on the verbal mediation condition. According to the Levy-Sperry hypothesis the less well lateralized subjects should have experienced difficulty using visual imagery mneumonics on the paired-associate …
The Relationship Of Prior Ability And Family Characteristics To School Attendance And School Achievement In Rural Guatemala, Marc Irwin, Patrice L. Engle, Charles Yarbrough, Robert E. Klein, John Townsend
The Relationship Of Prior Ability And Family Characteristics To School Attendance And School Achievement In Rural Guatemala, Marc Irwin, Patrice L. Engle, Charles Yarbrough, Robert E. Klein, John Townsend
Psychology and Child Development
Data from a longitudinal study in progress were used to investigate the relationships between intellectual ability prior to schooling opportunities and characteristics of family and home environment, and elementary school attendance and performance in 3 rural Guatemalan communities. Pre-school- ing mental test performances, family SES level, and indices of parental values concerning education were all associated with attending or not attending school. Length of school attendance was predicted by pre-schooling mental test scores for girls and by family SES level and parental values for boys. Age at first enrollment was predicted by both pre-schooling mental test scores and family SES …
The Emotional Responses Of Psychopaths And Non-Psychopaths To Contradictory Communications, William Eugene Foote
The Emotional Responses Of Psychopaths And Non-Psychopaths To Contradictory Communications, William Eugene Foote
Psychology ETDs
Psychopaths have frequently been characterized as having little concern for the feelings and welfare of others. This characteristic has often served as a diagnostic criterion for the group and consequently has received little direct experimental study on its own right. The purpose of this study was to examine affective arousal related to social stimuli in a group of 20 psychopaths and 20 non-psychopaths selected from the patient population of a large west-coast maximum security hospital. The social stimuli were 10 tape-recorded "letters" which the patients were told to imagine were from a "girl friend." These tapes contained contradictory messages similar …
Effects Of Constant And Varied Input Orders On Transfer Of Recall And Output Consistency, Gerald A. Clausen
Effects Of Constant And Varied Input Orders On Transfer Of Recall And Output Consistency, Gerald A. Clausen
Psychology ETDs
A transfer design was utilized to test differential predictions, derived from a one-process contiguity model and a two-process organizational model, concerning what is learned in the free recall situation under conditions of constant input order, in which the serial order of the list items remains the same for each presentation, and varied input order, in which the order is rescrambled for each presentation. Half of the subjects received constant input during training and half varied. In the test phase, half of the subjects in each of these two groups continued under the same condition received during training, while the other …
Material-Specific Processes In Tactile Short-Term Memory, Christina Anne Meyers
Material-Specific Processes In Tactile Short-Term Memory, Christina Anne Meyers
Dissertations and Theses
Studies concerning tactile short-term memory (short-term memory or the sense of touch) have often been contradictory. Some of these studies support the existence of modality-specific tactile memory, a separate, independent storage system for tactile information. Other studies do not support such a system. Further, confusion has arisen regarding the tactile test materials, since many of them use common shapes which are easily labeled verbally. It is hypothesized that information which can be labeled is stored in material-specific verbal memory in the left hemisphere, while patterned or spatial information is stored in material-specific nonverbal memory in the right hemisphere.

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Personality Characteristics Of Social Work Students And Choice Of Social Work Practice Area, Linda A. Yegge, Francie E. Buktenica
An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Personality Characteristics Of Social Work Students And Choice Of Social Work Practice Area, Linda A. Yegge, Francie E. Buktenica
Dissertations and Theses
Due to curiosity about the "individual" vs. "social" intervention argument in the profession of social work, the authors of this study attempted to answer the question, “Do personality characteristics of Social Work Graduate Students influence their choice of social work practice?" Our hypothesis was that Introverts would be more inclined to focus on the individual in social work practice as opposed to Extraverts who would see societal change as a more pressing practice issue. Although our study identified no correlation between Introversion and Extraversion and social work practice orientation, there were some suggestions for further study. There appeared to be …
A Descriptive Study Of The Relationship Between Age And Problems Expressed By Women Seeking Out-Patient Mental Health Services, Linda M. Rodgers, Joyce Carey
A Descriptive Study Of The Relationship Between Age And Problems Expressed By Women Seeking Out-Patient Mental Health Services, Linda M. Rodgers, Joyce Carey
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to provide a descriptive analysis of the problems presented by a specific group of women seeking out-patient mental health treatment and to relate these problems to the ontogenetic (age-related) developmental issues presented in a study of the literature. The researcher's involvement in this area developed from interest in current literature on adult development, and a personal commitment to life-long growth and acceptance of the inherent changes. In order to investigate whether developmental issues exist for this group of women, and if so to describe them, two distinct age groups--the decades of the 20's and …

The Effect Of Background Noise On Children's Selective Listening Behavior, Cathryn A. Chartier
Dissertations and Theses
This study investigated the effect of distracting linguistic background noise on children's ability to perform three-part commands. A total of twelve first grade subjects, six "normal" and six reading delayed, were individually administered a series of twenty, three-part commands. Each child performed once in quiet and once in a noise environment, and the performances in those two conditions were compared.
Effects Of Cognitive Complexity, Stress, And Cognitive Style On Pauses In Spontaneous Speech, Daniel B. Matthews
Effects Of Cognitive Complexity, Stress, And Cognitive Style On Pauses In Spontaneous Speech, Daniel B. Matthews
Psychology ETDs
Changes in the location, duration, and frequency of pauses in spontaneous speech were studied as a function of two levels of cognitive complexity, two of situational stress, and three levels of a dimension of the subjects' cognitive style (scanning). Since pauses reflect the location in a sentence where cognitive activity takes place, their variation in numbers and length allow inferences about underlying speech production processes. Subjects were classified into three groups based on the extensiveness of perceptual scanning, a personality characteristic hypothesized to be related to speech production processes. Scanning style was evaluated by means of factor scores derived from …
A Comparison Between A Clinical Sample Of Parents And Non-Parents, As Reflected By Their Scores On The Mmpi, Thomas Kearney, Casey Wegner
A Comparison Between A Clinical Sample Of Parents And Non-Parents, As Reflected By Their Scores On The Mmpi, Thomas Kearney, Casey Wegner
Dissertations and Theses
The area of childlessness, particularly voluntary childlessness, has been virtually ignored by most researchers. Pohlman claims to have been unable to find research which supports the popular idea that intentionally childless husbands and wives tend to be emotionally disturbed. However, he does note that he was able to find numerous statements from medical and social science publications which in various ways imply that the deliberately childless are usually maladjusted.
Symmetry Versus Asymmetry In Paired-Associate Learning: A Test Of The Dual Coding Theory, Jerry Manheimer
Symmetry Versus Asymmetry In Paired-Associate Learning: A Test Of The Dual Coding Theory, Jerry Manheimer
Student Work
The dual coding theory of imagery (Paivio, 1975) holds that there are two independent coding processes: Imaginal processes and verbal processes. Imaginal processes, in effect, present information ’’all at once" to the organism. Verbal processes, according to the dual coding theory, are characterized by a sequential mode of organization. Sequentially organized information is processed temporally by the organism, with meaning contingent upon the order of processing. The proposed thesis seeks to test the validity of Paivio's dual coding theory of imagery through the paired-associate learning paradigm.
Selective Attention In Hyperactive Children Responsive To Methylphenidate, James Robert Allender
Selective Attention In Hyperactive Children Responsive To Methylphenidate, James Robert Allender
Psychology ETDs
Electrophysiological measures of cortical activity have indicated that hyperactive children who show a positive response to methylphenidate may have a deficit in inhibitory innervation. It has been suggested that this deficit may occur in the sensory and motor systems and result in two major symptoms of hyperactivity, poor attention and excessive motor activity. In this experiment sensory inhibition was evaluated for hyperactive and normal subjects using a shadowing task with various types of distractors. It was hypothesized that if attentional deficits of hyperactive subjects were due to their inability to inhibit irrelevant sensory input, then shadowing performance for the hyperactive …
Foreperiod Effects In Simple Reaction Time: A Variable Criterion Theory Analysis, John Mark Schnizlein
Foreperiod Effects In Simple Reaction Time: A Variable Criterion Theory Analysis, John Mark Schnizlein
Psychology ETDs
A model of foreperiod effects in simple reaction time, based on Variable Criterion Theory, was proposed. In this model foreperiod varied within session affects the mean of the distribution of the response criterion in accord with the changing conditional probability of imperative signal occurrence. Increases in between-session foreperiod are hypothesized to increase the variability of the criterion because of errors in time estimation. These assumed criterion effects predict the existing empirical foreperiod effects if the growth of sensory strength is a negatively accelerated function of time. The results of Experiment 1 indicate that the mean of the criterion decreases with …
