The role of the Rangeland Management Branch is to promote the sustained economic use of the rangeland resource. It provides research and extension services to the pastoral industry, provides advice on the condition of the range resource to Government and provides technical information on rangelands to other rangeland managers. A principal objective to be met in fulfilling that role is the development and promotion of economically efficient place systems that conserve the rangeland resource. At the inaugural Pastoral Soil Conservation Districts Conference in Meekatharra in May 1987, pastoralist delegates emphasized the importance of achieving that objective within the various soil …
Woody Plants Under Stress, Deborah B. Hill, William M. Fountain
Woody Plants Under Stress, Deborah B. Hill, William M. Fountain
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
When people see their woody plants (shrubs and trees) decline, they often want a "magical" treatment to make them lush, green and healthy again. But no magic exists. This publication should help you understand some common causes of woody plant stress, how stress leads to decline and what measures, if any, can make the tree healthy again. Remember, however, that all trees and shrubs like every living organism, will eventually die.
Patterns Of Sulfur Deposition In The Wood Of Pinus Echinatia Mill. From The Cumberland Plateau In Kentucky, Darrell Ray
Patterns Of Sulfur Deposition In The Wood Of Pinus Echinatia Mill. From The Cumberland Plateau In Kentucky, Darrell Ray
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Air pollution and acid precipitation have long had an influence on plant and animal life. In this study, the level of sulfur in the stem tissue of Pinus echinata Mill. was measured in trees from various sites along the western edge of the Cumberland Plateau to determine the presence and pattern of sulfur deposition in this species. Overall, a 40.28% increase in sulfur levels was observed from four sites along the plateau with levels increasing from 0.072 mgS/gdwt in the 1962-66 growth increment to 0.101 mg in the 1982-86 increment. According to a computer generated analysis of variance, the differences …

Quarantine Disinfestation A Bibliography With Relevance To Ornamental Plant Material, Kevin Seaton, Daryl Joyce
Quarantine Disinfestation A Bibliography With Relevance To Ornamental Plant Material, Kevin Seaton, Daryl Joyce
Biosecurity published reports
This bibliography has been compiled as part of a programme to develop new and improved techniques for the insect disinfestation of export cut-flowers and cut-foliage. The objective of the programme is to identify the most effective disinfestation treatments. Suitable treatments should kill insects in the flowers without directly injuring the flowers or reducing their postharvest life.
The bibliography presents references relating to the disinfestation of ornamental material (i.e. cut-flowers, cut-foliage, and potted plants). However, it also includes references on disinfestation of fruit, vegetables, and stored grain where this information has some relevance to the disinfestation of ornamental materials. The bibliography …

Factors Affecting Recovery From Defoliation During Drought In Two Aridland Tussock Grasses, Carlos Alberto Busso
Factors Affecting Recovery From Defoliation During Drought In Two Aridland Tussock Grasses, Carlos Alberto Busso
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The importance of several factors in limiting recovery from defoliation was investigated in field-grown plants of Agropyron desertorum and Agropyron spicatum exposed to drought , natural or irrigated conditions. Leaf extension rate, components of leaf area production, number of metabolically active axillary buds and carbohydrate availability were examined on the same plants immediately after defoliation and/or in the following spring from 1984 until 1986.
The diurnal course of leaf growth did not relate to turgor pressure in the expanded portion of leaf laminae. Rather growth was apparently associated with air temperature. Leaf extension rate was lower under drought than under …
Occurrence Of Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizae In Degraded Rangelands And Physiological Responses Of Six Agropyron Cultivars To Infection, Di Jian Jun
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Physiological and morphological responses of six Agropyron cultivars to vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) inoculation were measured in the greenhouse. These included diploid, tetraploid, and hexaploid cultivars. Plants had up to 94% infection after three months. The two diploid cultivars (A. cristatum (Fairway) and A. puberulum) had the fastest rate of infection. With VAM infection the two diploid cultivars were significantly reduced in rood biomass and had lower water use efficiency than without infection. Phosphorus concentration of mycorrhizal plants was significantly higher in shoots of four or the six cultivars. Carbon dioxide gas exchange rate, transpiration rate, stomatal resistance …
Decomposition Of Roots In The Great Dismal Swamp, Edward G. Tupacz
Decomposition Of Roots In The Great Dismal Swamp, Edward G. Tupacz
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The decomposition rates of roots to a depth of 40 cm were estimated by two methods in four plant communities in the periodically flooded Great Dismal Swamp. Modified litter bags and a core method were simultaneously employed on three flooded sites and an unflooded mixed hardwood site. Reciprocal samples (litter from each of the other sites) were placed on each site to examine the effects of litter composition.
For the litter bags, the cedar and maple - gum sites displayed the lowest mean decay rate. However, reciprocal samples showed that roots from the cedar and mixed hardwood sites decayed the …

Blister Beetles In Alfalfa, C. M. Christensen, Lee H. Townsend
Blister Beetles In Alfalfa, C. M. Christensen, Lee H. Townsend
Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference
Blister beetles are Iong cylindrical beetles that may be black, gray, yellow and brown striped, black with gray margins on the wing covers or black with a red head. These insects are usually found feeding in clusters on alfalfa. They can cause severe sickness and sometimes death when livestock especially horses eat the live or dead beetles. They are usually not found in alfalfa in mid-July and early August which translates to the third or fourth cutting. Blister beetles (black ones, gray margined ones, and yellow striped ones) were collected in very noticeable numbers in several central Kentucky alfalfa fields …
Perspectives On Process In Plant Virology, Myron K. Brakke
Perspectives On Process In Plant Virology, Myron K. Brakke
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The editors asked that I write a chapter on landmarks in plant virology, a topic that has been covered by several authors, for example by Henderson Smith (89), Bawden (9), Holmes (51), Markham (62), Harrison (44), Black (12), and Matthews (64). In 1 938, the first of these authors, Henderson Smith (89), divided his presidential address to the Society for Applied Biology between the control of plant-virus diseases and the nature of plant viruses. Progress since then has been much more rapid in the latter than in the former area. Henderson Smith could easily understand today's literature on losses, control, …
Flora And Vegetation Of The Meadow River Wetlands, Greenbrier County, West Virginia, Alan Edward Brant
Flora And Vegetation Of The Meadow River Wetlands, Greenbrier County, West Virginia, Alan Edward Brant
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The Meadow River wetlands comprise the second largest wetland complex within the state of West Virginia, containing approximately 3131 acres (1392 ha) of swamp and wet meadow (Evans et al. 1982). Plant collecting within this complex as determined by available literature and herbarium specimens has been limited in the past and apparently dealt only with the wetlands near the head of Otter Creek. Grafton et al. (1982) conducted walk-through surveys in conjunction with a statewide wetland survey and the West Virginia Department of Highways performed a rather detailed vegetation analysis in the same area as part of an environmental impact …

The Bog Forest Community At Cranberry Glades, West Virginia, Amy Casdorph Kokesh
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
An investigation of the Bog Forest Community of the Cranberry Glades Botanical Area and Cranberry Wilderness/ Monongahela National Forest, West Virginia, revealed a dominance of mixed conifers and northern hardwoods. The composition of the forest was determined through vegetational analysis of the forest strata using the list-count quadrat method. Tsuqa canadensis, Betula alleqhaniensis, Prunus serotina, and Picea rubens were dominant while eight additional species in the arboreal stratum were found to be tolerant subordinates. Rhododendron maximum dominated the understory/shrub stratum forming thickets along the interior boundary of the bog forest. The herbaceous stratum was characterized by species generally affiliated with …

The Use Of Permeability, Conductivity, Conductance And Resistance In The Description Of Water Movement In Soils And Plants, H Borg
Resource management technical reports
Permeability, conductivity, conductance and resistance are important parameters in the description of water movement in soils and plants. These terms are related, but not synonymous. Permeability is only a function of the flow pathgeometry of the medium, while conductivity also depends on the fluid involved. Conductance, in addition, takes the size of the medium into account. Resistance is simply the inverse ofconductance. By applying the definition of resistance, it isshown that Darcy's law and Ohm's law are equivalent. Conductance and resistance relate volume flow rate to a potential difference, but to relate volume flux (volume flowrate per unit area) to …

An Inventory And Condition Survey Of Rangelands In The Ashburton River Catchment, Western Australia, A A. Mitchell, A L. Payne, W F. Holman
Technical Bulletins
The inventory and condition survey of rangelands in the Ashburton River catchment, undertaken by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA) between 1976 and 1978, describes and maps the natural resources of the region’s pastoral leasehold land. This survey report provides a baseline record of the existence and condition of the natural area’s resources, to assist with the planning and implementation of land management practices. The report identified and described the condition of soils, landforms, vegetation, habitat, ecosystems, and declared plants and animals. It also assessed the impact of pastoralism and made land management recommendations. The area surveyed …
Rosaceous Chamaebatiaria-Like Foliage From The Paleogene Of Western North America, Jack A. Wolfe, Wesley Wehr
Rosaceous Chamaebatiaria-Like Foliage From The Paleogene Of Western North America, Jack A. Wolfe, Wesley Wehr
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Chamaebatiaria and Chamaebatia, two characteristic genera of the Californian floristic province, are traditionally placed in different subfamilies of Rosaceae , Spiraeoideae and Rosoideae, respectively. Analysis of the foliar and reproductive characters of the extant species of these genera indicates that the two genera could be closely related and the assignment of Chamaebatia to Rosoideae invalid. Fossil leaves of lineages of both genera occur in the Paleogene montane floras of the Rocky Mountain region and provide evidence that the two lineages diverged from a common ancestor in the Eocene. The common ancestor probably was adapted to sunny habitats in mesic coniferous …
