Hurley Stage II or III hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) may necessitate surgical excision of diseased skin and subcutaneous fat for symptom control and disease management. These excisions result in open wounds in topographically challenging regions and typically cannot be primarily closed. This study evaluates the use of a synthetic electrospun fiber matrix (SEFM) as a post-resection regeneration template to accelerate re-granulation and improve subsequent skin graft incorporation. This prospective pilot study enrolled Hurley Stage II or III patients undergoing surgical resection of HS lesions. SEFM was applied to the resulting wounds in conjunction with negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT). Patients were …

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of arthritis that causes inflammation in the joints and ligaments of the spine. The current study aimed to determine the level of serum interleukin-33 (IL-33), soluble stromelysin-2 (sST2) interleukin, and HLA-B27 typing among Iraqi AS patients. The whole blood samples of the patients were collected from medical hospitals in Baghdad city. The ELISA technique was used to measure the serum levels of IL-33 and sST2, and the HLA-B27 typing was performed by sequence-specific primer PCR (SSP-PCR). The patients were divided into patients newly diagnosed with the disease and patients receiving biological treatment (etanercept) in …

Mathematical modeling with the help of numerical coding of graphs has been used in different fields of science, especially in chemistry for the studies of molecular structures. A special type of graph invariant called the topological index is the collection of data on algebraic graphs and provides a mathematical way to understand chemical structural features. In chemical graph theory, the topological index is a type of molecular descriptor calculated based on the graph of chemical compounds. Topological indices help us collect information about algebraic graphs and give us a mathematical approach to understand the properties of algebraic structures. With the …

The Hippo pathway controls organ development, homeostasis, and regeneration primarily by modulating YAP/TEAD-mediated gene expression. Although emerging studies report Hippo-YAP dysfunction after viral infection, it is largely unknown in the context of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Here, we analyzed RNA sequencing data from human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CMs) and SARS-CoV-2-infected human lung samples, and observed a decrease in YAP target gene expression. In screening SARS-CoV-2 nonstructural proteins, we found that nonstructural protein 13 (NSP13), a conserved coronavirus helicase, inhibits YAP transcriptional activity independent of the upstream Hippo kinases LATS1/2. Consistently, introducing NSP13 into mouse cardiomyocytes suppresses …

Occupational health equity scholarship has been growing over the past decade, including social-structural determinants of health research that centres the voices and experiences of historically marginalised communities. In our commentary, we focus on the intersection of work-related and non-work-related factors and how they impact the health of workers, their families and their communities through community-engaged research. Case studies include the implementation of mobile clinics that are developed alongside communities, community organising to examine and reduce health disparities among racially segregated workers, the development of research instruments and measures to study racism and discrimination, and a focus on how the distribution …

Adenylosuccinate lyase deficiency (ADSLd) is a rare autosomal recessive purine metabolism disorder with several clinical manifestations. While toxic substrate accumulation is a known hallmark, no additional molecular mechanisms have been established. Here, we show that ADSLd is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, including increased fragmentation, impaired respiration, and reduced ATP production. The severity of mitochondrial impairment correlates with ADSLd pathology, especially in mitochondria-dependent tissues. We also identify defects in mitochondrial dynamics and transport linked to ERK2 and AKT suppression. Notably, overexpressing constitutively active ERK2 or supplementing purine intermediates partially rescues the mitochondrial phenotype. These findings suggest an alternative disease mechanism and …

Upon antigenic stimulation, CD4+T cells undergo clonal expansion elevating their bioenergetic demands and utilization of nutrients like glucose and glutamine. The nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a well-known regulator of oxidative stress, but its involvement in modulating the metabolism of CD4+T cells remains unexplored. We report that Nrf2 protein levels are temporally regulated in activated CD4+T cells, with elevated expression during early activation followed by a decline. T cell-specific constitutive activation of Nrf2, by deletion of its negative regulator Keap1, enhances early activation and interleukin-2 (IL-2) expression, upregulates T cell receptor (TCR) signaling, and increases activation-driven expansion of …

TDP43 is an RNA/DNA-binding protein increasingly recognized for its role in neurodegenerative conditions, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). As characterized by its aberrant nuclear export and cytoplasmic aggregation, TDP43 proteinopathy is a hallmark feature in over 95% of ALS/FTD cases, leading to detrimental cytosolic aggregates and a reduction in nuclear functionality in neurons. Building on our prior work linking TDP43 proteinopathy to the accumulation of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) in neurons, the present investigation uncovers a novel regulatory relationship between TDP43 and DNA mismatch repair (MMR) gene expression. Here, we show that TDP43 depletion or overexpression …

Murine and human immune systems differ significantly, particularly within the myeloid lineage. Humanized mice, generated by transplanting human hematopoietic stem, progenitor cells into genetically modified mice, are invaluable to study human immune development and function in vivo. However, a major limitation of current models is suboptimal myelopoiesis, particularly lack of functional human neutrophils, hampering the modeling of human immune responses and chronic diseases. Here, we describe a humanized mouse model, named MaGIC for genes replaced, in the

Infections with nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) are on the rise. Here, we investigated an uncommon NTM infection, by M. haemophilum (Mh, n = 4), from a shared geographic location in the United States. All patients had underlying immunosuppressive conditions or treatments. We identified that all these individuals had a nonsynonymous mutation in GATA2 gene, which was absent in healthy controls (HCs, n = 4) from the same geographic area (Missouri, USA). Whole blood from these individuals had attenuated cytokine responses to Mh stimulation for IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, MIP-1α and MIP-1β, but not to phytohemagglutinin (PHA) or another NTM, M. abscessus. Impaired …

Sources, Distribution And Ecological Risk Assessment Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon In Sediment Of Tigris River, Iraq, Shahad R. Zaki, Maysoon Hassan Meshjel, Abdul Hameed M.J. Al-Obaidy
Baghdad Science Journal
Sediment samples were collected from five sites at Tigris River from Baghdad to Wasit Governorates River from December 2021 to November 2022. Sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in these sediment samples were analyzed. The results show that the total PAH concentrations ranged from 957.37 to 1805.05 μg/kg dry weight (dw) with mean values of 1368.034 μg/kg. Furthermore, the high molecular weight compounds (four, five, and six rings) of PAH in the analyzed sediment samples suggest that combustion sources such as fuel, gasoline, and vehicle emissions are the primary sources of PAHs in the environment. The sediment quality guidelines …

A Numerical Approach To Time-Space Fractional Stochastic Diffusion Equation, Archana Mourya, Kalyanrao Takale, Shrikisan Gaikwad
Baghdad Science Journal
The primary objective of this paper is to propose a Crank-Nicolson scheme tailored to analyze a time-space fractional stochastic diffusion equation subject to additive noise. Using the Caputo definition for time fractional derivatives and the shifted Grunwald-Letnikov definition for space fractional derivatives, a fractional order Crank-Nicolson finite difference scheme is devised to obtain a numerical solution. Considerable attention has been paid to examining the stability and convergence properties of this fractional order Crank-Nicolson method. To validate the effectiveness of the developed method, a comprehensive investigation using a test problem is conducted to assess its accuracy. The study harnesses the power …

The present robot planning methods pay no attention to the impact of the robot's size and the space it occupies in the environment on path planning. This paper presents a centralized hybrid method to plan optimal paths for multiple robotic long vehicles (RLVs) competing with each other to reach one common goal, taking into account the space that must be available to the RLV at each step to avoid narrow spaces that are too small to pass through. The environment analysis for each RLV is improved by assigning constant weight to the obstacles and calculating two new parameters: safety (SF) …

We reflect on our experience using a faith community to host a civil rights film screening and discussion series. Hosting civil rights education events in a religious setting was a challenge due to the lack of integration in many faith communities, and the limited resources of the congregation. The short-term results include increased awareness of the history of civil rights struggles, which led to greater understanding of current events for members of the congregation.

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
Experiential-learning theory suggests that students acquire knowledge through hands-on learning environments, and aspiring journalists need a setting where they can experience science—its process(es) as well as how to report empirical findings. Researchers used pre/post questionnaires, field notebook evaluation, and focus group analysis as methods to assess an interdisciplinary, experiential course that combined science and media undergraduates. Results revealed students valued procedural over fact-based knowledge. Students also indicated increased perceived confidence—even when they answered questions incorrectly.

Planet Earth is experiencing profound and irreversible transformations caused by the ongoing climate crisis. Simultaneously, technological advancements often create a misleading belief that these complex issues can be solved through with simple tech-fixes. However, to address the root causes of unsustainability, a radical shift in mindset is necessary. It is essential to challenge anthropocentric Euromodern narratives based on binary categories (nature-culture, humans-nonhumans), which have historically perpetuated detachment from the environment. Instead, a more relational understanding of reality is needed - one that positions humans and nonhumans within a more-than-human web of life. This shift necessitates the development of new design …

This letter is a call to those interested in the future of design and design education, and open to challenging the dominant materialist/physicalist paradigm. With advancements in quantum science, plasma physics, and wave mechanics, new understandings and models have arisen that offer professional and academic opportunities. Design, especially of physical, three-dimensional artifacts, sees objects as essentially vehicles for valuable subjective experience. What are the implications of acknowledging that all matter is actually congealed energy, and that all people are composed of, surrounded by, and affected by frequencies? How might designers better understand and address positive resonances and negative dissonances within …

This article explores the current state of industrial design in relation to future manufacturing technologies and paradigms. To date, no empirical research has been conducted that specifically examines the role of practising industrial designers in relation to their understanding and preparedness for technologies and systems as part of the next manufacturing revolution—Industry 4.0. As industrial design historically emerged in response to mass production, its continued relevance depends on how the profession evolves alongside technological transformation. We argue that changes in current production influence the development of the design profession and therefore its education. Although new technologies and systems are being …

This research advocates for a shift towards inclusive teaching practices in industrial design education. Neurodivergent industrial design students and recent graduates were leveraged as experts in their lived experiences to promote inclusivity. This study investigates what recommendations the neurodivergent participants could co-design toward inclusive teaching practices. Seven participants (graduate design students) from a North American institution were asked to share their background, comment on the state of industrial design education, and articulate what an inclusive version could be in the future through interviews and co-design workshops. Thematic analysis revealed 6 themes: (1) Interest: engaging in projects that interested them, (2) …
