Effect Of Perennial Ryegrass Cultivars On The Fatty Acid Composition In Milk Of Stall-Fed Cows, Anjo Elgersma, H. J. Smit, G. Ellen, S. Tamminga Apr 2023

Effect Of Perennial Ryegrass Cultivars On The Fatty Acid Composition In Milk Of Stall-Fed Cows, Anjo Elgersma, H. J. Smit, G. Ellen, S. Tamminga

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Herbage provides bulk feed for ruminants and plant lipids, especially C18:3, are a major source of benefical fatty acids (FA) in milk. There are very few direct comparisons allowing a precise evaluation of the effects of the basal forage diet on milk FA composition. Grass quality differences can affect rumen metabolism and there could be opportunities to change the composition of ruminant products through choice of grass cultivar. To test this hypothesis, six cultivars were fed to dairy cows in a stall-feeding trial with fresh grass to evaluate the effect of grass cultivar on rumen VFA and milk FA composition …

Antioxidative Activities Of Alfalfa And Timothy Varieties, J. K. Lee, H. S. Park, J. G. Kim, B. H. Paek, J. H. Fike Apr 2023

Antioxidative Activities Of Alfalfa And Timothy Varieties, J. K. Lee, H. S. Park, J. G. Kim, B. H. Paek, J. H. Fike

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The term "functional foods" is often used as a generic description for the beneficial effects of ingested foods that go beyond their traditional nutritive value (Bauman et al., 2001). Milk and dairy products are important dietary sources of nutrients, providing energy, high quality protein, and a variety of vitamins and minerals. Recent research has focused on altering the fat and protein content of milk and other dairy products in order to improve their nutrient content to more aptly reflect current dietary recommendations and trends. As a result, additional focus is being given to designing foods that have beneficial effects …

Forage Yield And Nutritive Value Of 30 Cultivars Of Maize For Silage In The Highland Valleys Of Central Mexico, G. Tovar, J. L. Arellano, M. E. Sosa, C. Sánchez, H. P. Pérez, E. Vera, U. M. Vera, J. I. Vázquez Apr 2023

Forage Yield And Nutritive Value Of 30 Cultivars Of Maize For Silage In The Highland Valleys Of Central Mexico, G. Tovar, J. L. Arellano, M. E. Sosa, C. Sánchez, H. P. Pérez, E. Vera, U. M. Vera, J. I. Vázquez

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In Mexico, the selection of maize cultivars for forage has mainly been based on dry matter (DM) yields, not considering nutritional quality as an important evaluation parameter. The objective of this study was to assess forage yield and nutritive value of Highland and Subtropical maize cultivars for silage in the Highland Valleys of Central México.

Industrialization Of Tall Wheatgrass For Construction Of “Coastal Grass Belt”, Hongwei Li, Qi Zheng, Jianlin Wang, Hongyong Sun, Kexin Zhang, Hongman Fang, Xuerong Xing, Weicai Yang, Xiaofeng Cao, Xiaojing Liu, Haichun Jing, Kang Chong, Zhensheng Li Apr 2023

Industrialization Of Tall Wheatgrass For Construction Of “Coastal Grass Belt”, Hongwei Li, Qi Zheng, Jianlin Wang, Hongyong Sun, Kexin Zhang, Hongman Fang, Xuerong Xing, Weicai Yang, Xiaofeng Cao, Xiaojing Liu, Haichun Jing, Kang Chong, Zhensheng Li

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Tall wheatgrass (Elytrigia elongata) is a perennial cool-season bunchgrass with high productivity and tolerance to salt and alkali, waterlogging, and drought. Since first introduced into China in 1950s, tall wheatgrass has long been used as a wild parent for distant hybridization with wheat (Triticum aestivum). During 1980s─1990s, a few tall wheatgrass varieties were introduced to China as forage grass, nonetheless, currently they are still not widely cultivated and no variety was certificated. In 2020, Zhensheng Li put forward a proposal to construct “Coastal Grass Belt” on saline and alkaline soils in the Circum-Bohai sea region, which provides an opportunity for …

Hybrids Between Meadow And Smooth Bromegrass: A New Forage Crop For Canada, B. E. Coulman, Y. S. N. Ferdinandez

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss.) has been an important hay grass in the agricultural regions of western Canada for approximately 50 years. Meadow bromegrass (B. riparius Rehm.) has become the most important pasture species in this region over the last 15 years. It is possible to produce hybrids between these species, which could lead to the development of a type of bromegrass which would be useful for both hay and pasture purposes.

The Seasonal Nutritional Value Of Kikuyu Oversown With Ryegrass And Clover, Robin Meeske, Philip R. Botha, Hennie A. Snyman

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

To overcome the seasonality and relatively low forage quality of kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum), annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum spp.), perennial white (Trifolium repens) and red clover (Trifolium pratense) can be incorporated into an existing kikuyu stand to improve pasture quality and spring production. The aim of this study was to determine the quality of kikuyu (K), kikuyu oversown with annual ryegrass (KR), kikuyu oversown with a mixture of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and perennial white and red clover (KRC) and kikuyu oversown with a mixture of white and red clover (KC), in …

Liveweight Gain Of Lambs Grazing Six Short-Term Ryegrass Cultivars, W. W. Nichol, M. G. Norriss Apr 2023

Liveweight Gain Of Lambs Grazing Six Short-Term Ryegrass Cultivars, W. W. Nichol, M. G. Norriss

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Increasing dry matter (DM) production per ha is a key goal in ryegrass (Lolium) breeding programmes (Easton et al., 2002), based on the assumption that increased DM yield will in turn increase profitability per ha, through an increase in animal productivity. However, the performance of animals grazing pasture can also be modified by the quality of the forage on offer, and the presence of toxins within the pasture. The objective of this study was to compare the liveweight gain per hectare of lambs grazing six short-term ryegrasses, which had been selected for various combinations of improved DM …

Year-Round Grazing Of Beef Cows On Pangolagrass (Digitaria Decumbens Cv.Transvala) Pasture In Southern Area Of Japan, Yuji Nakanishi, Kiyoshi Hirano, A. Shouji Apr 2023

Year-Round Grazing Of Beef Cows On Pangolagrass (Digitaria Decumbens Cv.Transvala) Pasture In Southern Area Of Japan, Yuji Nakanishi, Kiyoshi Hirano, A. Shouji

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The southern area of Japan (Okinawa) has a sub-tropical climate. In this area beef calf production is now based on year-round grazing on giant stargrass (Cynodon aethiopicus Clayton & Haylan). However, the numbers of beef cows in this area are increasing rapidly and a grass with higher productivity than giant stargrass is required. The objective of this experiment was to examine the possibility of using pangolagrass (Digitaria decumbens cv. Transvala) pasture in this area.

Economic Comparison Of Pasture Based Lamb Production Systems In Southern Australia, A. J. Kennedy, A. N. Thompson Apr 2023

Economic Comparison Of Pasture Based Lamb Production Systems In Southern Australia, A. J. Kennedy, A. N. Thompson

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Lamb production enterprises in southern Australia utilise a pasture base as their primary nutrition source due to its low cost. Holmes Sackett & Associates (2003) identified that increasing total lamb weight per hectare by increasing ewe stocking rate, animal genetic potential and weaning percentage can increase enterprise profitability. The limitation of these enterprises is the seasonal and geographic variations impeding pasture production and quality. The 'MoreLamb Quality Pasture' project is demonstrating the benefits of mixing high performing grass, legume and herb species to extend the pasture-growing season and increase pasture quality. Key economic indicators of three pasture systems and commercial …

Sustainability Of Beef, Dairy And Goat Production With Batiki Grass (Ischaemum Aristatum Var. Indicum) In The Dry Season In Samoa, E. M. Aregheore Apr 2023

Sustainability Of Beef, Dairy And Goat Production With Batiki Grass (Ischaemum Aristatum Var. Indicum) In The Dry Season In Samoa, E. M. Aregheore

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Batiki grass (Ischaemum aristatum var. indicum) was introduced to Samoa from Fiji in the early 1970s to complement other existing natural or unimproved grasses and is now the most common propagated pasture grass in Samoa. The contrast between the wet and the dry seasons has a great impact on the nutritive value of batiki grass. Aregheore (2002) observed reduced growth rate, poor body condition score and low performance in steer calves and goats offered batiki as the sole diet during the dry season. This paper reports on the sustainability of beef, dairy and goat production with batiki grass …

Goose Meat Production Responses To Grass Based Diets, P. Gyüre, G. Nagy, S. Mihók

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Goose meat and feather production are important elements of farming in Hungary. There were no available data on grass intake by geese or the production potential of grass in goose farming, therefore, we conducted a series of experiments between 2000 and 2003 on goose production responses to grass-based diets.

Weight Gain Of Nellore X Red Angus, Holstein X Zebu, And Nellore Steers Supplemented On Brachiaria Brizantha Cv. Marandú Pasture, R. A. Reis, D. Freitas, F. L. Fregadolli, L. M. A. Bertipaglia, T. T. Berchielli, K. T. De Resende, D. S. Ferreira, A. G. Caselli

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Supplementation is a very efficient approach for improving animal performance and gain/ha in grazing systems in tropical conditions. However, care needs to be taken to avoid substitution effects (Moore et al., 1999). Results may also depend on animal genetics and the availability and nutritional value of forage. This trial aimed to evaluate different levels of supplementation using steers from different genetic groups on palisade grass (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandú) pasture during the rainy season.

West African Dwarf Goat Response To Supplementary Feeding In Cameroon, E. Tedonkeng Pamo, B. Boukila, F. Tendonkeng, J. R. Kana Apr 2023

West African Dwarf Goat Response To Supplementary Feeding In Cameroon, E. Tedonkeng Pamo, B. Boukila, F. Tendonkeng, J. R. Kana

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The production of the West African Dwarf goat (WADG) in Cameroon is very low, because of lack of proper nutrition. Nitrogen content is generally very low and fibre content is high, both in the grass and the crop residues which form the basis of their diet particularly during the dry season. Supplementation of these roughages is a promising way of alleviating nutrient deficiencies. Different types of supplementary feeding have been advocated to boost goat production (Leng, 2003), of which supplementary feeding with leguminous tree leaves is of high merit. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of supplementary …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Urea molasses multi-nutrient block (UMMB) has been widely used as a feed supplement to balance nutrition of ruminants fed low-quality forage-based diets in tropical and sub-tropical areas. This study was carried out to determine the effects of UMMB in reducing liveweight loss of both yak cows and calves grazing on low-quality pastures during winter on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, China.

New Advance In Forage Production And Dairy Industry In China, Zhiqiang Q. Li, J. G. Han Apr 2023

New Advance In Forage Production And Dairy Industry In China, Zhiqiang Q. Li, J. G. Han

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

There were 6.9 million dairy cows in China in 2002 with milk yield of 13 million t. These values were 21.4 and 26.7% higher respectively than in 2001. Milk yield per cow was 1891 kg, 4.4 % higher than in the previous year, but still one third lower than the world average. Milk fat and protein contents were about 3.2 and 3.0 % respectively, a little below the world average. Milk consumption was 10.9 kg per person, much lower than the world average (97.6 kg) So, although great changes have taken place in dairy breeding, forage production and disease control, …

A Comparison Of A Full Time Grazing And A Partial Storage Feeding System, For Dairy Cows, C. P. Ferris, D. C. Patterson Apr 2023

A Comparison Of A Full Time Grazing And A Partial Storage Feeding System, For Dairy Cows, C. P. Ferris, D. C. Patterson

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Partial storage feeding has been adopted by a number of Northern Ireland dairy farmers in recent years. This is due in part to increasing cow numbers, and as such, insufficient pasture close to the milking parlour to permit full time grazing. Partial storage feeding may also have environmental benefits, as well as reducing labour requirements associated with 'droving' and pasture management. In view of this, a study was undertaken to examine animal performance with either a full-time grazing, or a partial storage feeding regime.

Effect Of Time Spent On Pasture On Milk Production And Quality In Latxa Dairy Sheep, A. Garcia-Rodriguez, N. Mandaluniz, L. M. Oregui Apr 2023

Effect Of Time Spent On Pasture On Milk Production And Quality In Latxa Dairy Sheep, A. Garcia-Rodriguez, N. Mandaluniz, L. M. Oregui

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Dairy sheep production systems in the Basque country are pasture based. Forage resources are managed by shepherds who match herbage, forage and supplement availability with production requirements. This is achieved through a part-time grazing system, where ewes spend 3 to 7 hours grazing. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of restricted access to pasture on milk production and quality.

Animal Unit Of Sheep (Zel Breed) Grazing In Mazandaran Grasslands In Iran, Hossein Arzani, Reza Erfanzadeh, S. Farazmand

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Animal unit equivalents (AUEs), provide a means of summarising grazing capacity, calculating stocking rates and other stocking variables (Scarnecchia, 1990). Animal units (AU) are often defined in relation to the dominant animal type in an area In Iran there are 27 sheep breeds which are classified into three main body size classes, namely: small, medium and large. The objective of this experiment was to define animal units, animal and forage requirements for sheep grazing in Mozandaran grasslands.

The approach and the present system are outlined in this paper.

Constraints On Dairy Cattle Production From Locally Available Forages In Bangladesh, M. A. S. Khan Apr 2023

Constraints On Dairy Cattle Production From Locally Available Forages In Bangladesh, M. A. S. Khan

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The productivity of milk producing animals in Bangladesh is low because of low individual yield and poor fertility. The reasons for the low productivity are complex but, in order of priority, appear to be (a) the imbalanced nature of the nutrients that arise from the digestion of the forage resources, (b) the incidence of disease/parasitism, and (c) the often harsh climatic circumstances. Thus, the purpose of this study was to find out the practical constraints on dairy cattle production from locally available forages under small holding village conditions of Bangladesh.

Yield And Quality Parameters Of An Interspecific Hybrid Pennisetum Purpureum Schum. (Elephant-Grass) X Pennisetum Glaucum (L.) R. Br. Stuntz (Pearl Millet), J. A. Usberti Jr., R. Usberti, P. B. Alcantara, V. B. G. Alcantara, R. A. Possenti, M. A. C. Lucena

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Elephant-grass is a tropical forage grass used either as a supplement fodder or for direct grazing. It usually shows regular nutritive value (6-13% crude protein, CP, and 55-60% forage digestibility) (Alcantara et al., 1981). Most of the available cultivars produce no viable seeds. On the other hand, pearl millet has high seed yielding potential along with high quality forage (>15% CP and 70% forage digestibility). However, it shows poor forage production, low field persistence under grazing and low regrowth potential after cutting or grazing. During the 90's, an interspecific hybrid between the two species was developed, trying to …

Breeding A Psyllid-Resistant Interspecific Hybrid Leucaena For Beef Cattle Production In Northern Australia, Scott A. Dalzell, F. Lemos De Moraes, G. Solis Pasos Apr 2023

Breeding A Psyllid-Resistant Interspecific Hybrid Leucaena For Beef Cattle Production In Northern Australia, Scott A. Dalzell, F. Lemos De Moraes, G. Solis Pasos

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Production of the valuable fodder tree legume Leucaena leucocephala (leucaena) is limited to the subhumid (600-800 mm annual rainfall) areas of northern Australia by the psyllid insect pest Heteropsylla cubana. Defoliation caused by severe psyllid infestations can suppress forage yields of commercial leucaena varieties by 50-80%. Susceptibility to psyllid damage is a major impediment to grazier adoption of leucaena pastures in the more humid tropical areas of Australia. A comprehensive international agronomic evaluation of the entire Leucaena genus (Mullen et al., 2003) revealed that the artificial interspecific F1 hybrid of L. pallida x L. leucocephala ssp. glabrata …

New Pigeon Pea (Cajanus Cajan) Hybrids With Desirable Forage Traits, P. B. Alcantara, J. A. Usberti Jr., C. A. Colombo, V. B. G. Alcantara, R. Usberti, M. A. C. Lucena, M. Harris Apr 2023

New Pigeon Pea (Cajanus Cajan) Hybrids With Desirable Forage Traits, P. B. Alcantara, J. A. Usberti Jr., C. A. Colombo, V. B. G. Alcantara, R. Usberti, M. A. C. Lucena, M. Harris

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Pigeon pea is a tropical forage legume usually sown in mixed pastures with tropical forage grasses. Most of the available cultivars shows erect and tall plants with poor tillering potential, breakable thick stems, low leaf/stem ratios (fresh/dry matter) and low persistence under animal grazing. It shows a high dry matter production, due to low leaf/stem ratios (Barnes & Addo, 1997). Pigeon pea shows good crude protein levels/dry matter (ranging from 14-23%) and regular in vitro digestibility indexes (52-58%) (Karachi & Matata, 1996); animal consumption is affected by high tannin levels of young leaves. Being a self-pollinated species, the variability for …

Quantifying The Variation In Protein Content In White Clover (Trifolium Repens L.), A. H. Marshall, E. Sizer, A. Kingston-Smith, A. Williams, M. T. Abberton Apr 2023

Quantifying The Variation In Protein Content In White Clover (Trifolium Repens L.), A. H. Marshall, E. Sizer, A. Kingston-Smith, A. Williams, M. T. Abberton

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

White clover (Trifolium repens L.) is the main legume in temperate pastures. It has relatively low levels of water-soluble carbohydrate but produces forage of high quality with a high crude protein (CP) content and dry-matter digestibility (Beever, 1993). Some studies have suggested that the forage quality of white clover can be problematic because its high CP content may contribute to inefficient use of nitrogen in the rumen and exacerbate diffuse pollution via excreta (Waghorn & Caradus, 1994). The development of white clover germplasm with lower CP content would potentially benefit forage production and grassland management. A study was carried …

Factor Analysis Of Components Of Yield And Quality Traits In Lucerne (Medicago Sativa), A. A. Jafari, A. Ghamari Zare Apr 2023

Factor Analysis Of Components Of Yield And Quality Traits In Lucerne (Medicago Sativa), A. A. Jafari, A. Ghamari Zare

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Lucerne (Medicago sativa) originated from Iran and is one of the most important forage species in this country. The improvement in yield and quality traits are important objectives in breeding programmes. Smith et al. (1997) indicated that in the context of dairy production ranked digestibility was the most important criterion whilst high crude protein and low fibre content were of moderate priority. This study sought to determine the dependence relationships between yield, morphological and quality traits in 64 genotypes.

Genetic And Molecular Characterization Of Temperate And Tropical Forage Maize Inbred Lines, B. Alarcón-Zúñiga, E. Valadez-Moctezuma, T. Cervantes-Martinez, T. Cervantes-Santana, M. Mendoza‐Rodriguez Apr 2023

Genetic And Molecular Characterization Of Temperate And Tropical Forage Maize Inbred Lines, B. Alarcón-Zúñiga, E. Valadez-Moctezuma, T. Cervantes-Martinez, T. Cervantes-Santana, M. Mendoza‐Rodriguez

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Livestock feeding in the Central highland of Mexico is based on harvest, grazing and annual forage conservation, with forage maize being the most important silage crop (Alarcón, 1995). Even though forage maize is extensively bred in Europe, USA and Asia since the 1900’s, this started in Mexico only in the 1960’s, and little is known about genetic diversity in both agronomic and nutritive value traits. Our breeding program goals are to analyze combining ability of biomass and quality predictors and to study the genetic relationship of inbred lines between lowland tropical and temperate races from Mesa Central, by genetic and …

An Agronomic Evaluation Of Grazing Maize Combined With Companion Crops For Sheep In Northwestern Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, C. S. Dannhauser, E. A. Van Zyl Apr 2023

An Agronomic Evaluation Of Grazing Maize Combined With Companion Crops For Sheep In Northwestern Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, C. S. Dannhauser, E. A. Van Zyl

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Northwestern KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), in South Africa, is well known for its sheep production from natural rangeland in summer (October to May). During winter however, the nutritional value of the rangeland cannot maintain young growing sheep or pregnant and lactating ewes. With this in mind Lyle (1991) suggested the use of planted pastures for the winter. Crichton, Gertenbach & Henning (1998) and Esterhuizen & Niemand (1989) suggested maize crop residues for both cattle and sheep during winter, whereas Moore (1997) evaluated grazing maize (not harvested) for this purpose. He found that the protein content of the crop was inadequate and for …

Effect Of Pre-Planting Seed Treatment Options On Dormancy Breaking And Germination Of Ziziphus Mucronata, Abubeker Hassen, N. F. G. Rethman, Willem A. Van Niekerk Apr 2023

Effect Of Pre-Planting Seed Treatment Options On Dormancy Breaking And Germination Of Ziziphus Mucronata, Abubeker Hassen, N. F. G. Rethman, Willem A. Van Niekerk

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Ziziphus mucronata (Buffalo thorn) is a multipurpose tree, widely adapted to a range of ecological conditions and tolerant of extreme climatic conditions, including frost and drought (Venter & Venter, 1996). It is a valuable fodder tree for livestock and game animals, especially in the drier parts of Africa (Rothauge et al. 2003). Similar to many other leguminous species, establishment is constrained by low and erratic germination of the seed, which has been attributed mainly to the physical barrier of the stony endocarp and dormancy associated with seed coat impermeability. This experiment aimed to compare the suitability of various seed treatment …

The Productivity Of Coastal Meadows In Finland, R. Nevalainen, A. Huuskonen, S. Jaakola, J. Kiljala, E. Joki-Tokola Apr 2023

The Productivity Of Coastal Meadows In Finland, R. Nevalainen, A. Huuskonen, S. Jaakola, J. Kiljala, E. Joki-Tokola

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The coastal meadows of Finland have gained a new interest as a summer pasture for cattle. These habitats have great historical, aesthetic and biological value (Pessa & Anttila, 2000). Typical features of the coastal meadows are the varying vegetation zones and wet, sometimes waterlogged, soils. The meadows are important nesting and feeding habitats for many water birds. When grazing ceases, reeds, trees and shrubs take over and the area loses its openness. Lately the amount of grasslands and pastures has drastically declined all over Europe. In Finland, the area of semi-natural biotopes has decreased to 1% of what it had …

Grazing Animal Production Systems And Grazing Land Characteristics In A Semi-Arid Region Of Greece, I. Hadjigeorgiou, G. Economou, D. Lolis, N. Moustakas, G. Zervas

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Rough grazing in Greece cover about 40% of the total land area, is publicly owned and managed extensively (Hadjigeorgiou et al., 2002). The Prefecture of Larisa is in the centre of Greece, and has 212,000 ha of rough grazing land, with a variable topography ranging from sea level up to 3,000 m a.s.l. This area is utilized by a total population of 135,000 LU (mainly sheep, goats and some suckler cows), which consumes annually an appreciable fraction of their total nutrient requirements from rough grazing.
