Online Deception Detection Using Bdi Agents, Richard Alan Merritts
Online Deception Detection Using Bdi Agents, Richard Alan Merritts
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
This research has two facets within separate research areas. The research area of Belief, Desire and Intention (BDI) agent capability development was extended. Deception detection research has been advanced with the development of automation using BDI agents. BDI agents performed tasks automatically and autonomously. This study used these characteristics to automate deception detection with limited intervention of human users. This was a useful research area resulting in a capability general enough to have practical application by private individuals, investigators, organizations and others. The need for this research is grounded in the fact that humans are not very effective at detecting …

Super-Aptamer Bio-Imprinted Hydrogels : An Investigation Into The Optimization And Characterization Of Cross-Linked Polymeric Materials Displaying Macromolecular Amplified Responses, Nicholas Alexander Gariano
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
It is becoming more important to detect ultra-low concentrations of analytes for biomedical, environmental, and national security applications. Equally important is that new methods should be easy to use, inexpensive, portable, and if possible allow detection using the naked eye. Detection of low concentrations of analytes generally cannot be achieved directly, but requires signal amplification by catalysts, macromolecules, metal surfaces or supramolecular aggregates. The rapidly progressing field of macromolecular signal amplification has been advanced using conjugated polymers, chirality in polymers, solvating polymers and polymerization/depolymerization strategies. The use of molecularly imprinted polymers is ideal for creation of novel sensors to meet …
Multireference Tdoa-Based Source Localization, Hamid Torbati Fard, Mahmoud Atashbar, Yaser Norouzi, Farrokh Hojjat Kashani
Multireference Tdoa-Based Source Localization, Hamid Torbati Fard, Mahmoud Atashbar, Yaser Norouzi, Farrokh Hojjat Kashani
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Time difference of arrival (TDOA)-based methods usually achieve the most accurate source localization in passive systems. In these methods, one of the sensors is assigned as the reference and the TDOA of the others with respect to the reference is measured. The source location is estimated by processing these TDOAs. In this paper, a multireference maximum likelihood (ML)-Taylor algorithm is proposed in order to decrease the source localization error of the TDOA methods. In the proposed algorithm, TDOAs are measured assuming 2 different reference sensors, and then the ML objective function of this multireference TDOA algorithm is derived and solved …
Utilizing Cyber Espionage To Combat Terrorism, Gary Adkins
Utilizing Cyber Espionage To Combat Terrorism, Gary Adkins
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The world has effectively exited the Industrial Age and is firmly planted in the Information Age. Global communication at the speed of light has been a great asset to both businesses and private citizens. However, there is a dark side to the age we live in, where terrorist groups are able to communicate, plan, fund, recruit, and spread their message to the world. The relative anonymity the internet provides hinders law enforcement and security agencies in not only locating would-be terrorists but also in disrupting their operations. The internet is a loosely knit group of computers and routers and is …

Developing A Sustainable Ecotourism Foundation In Indonesian National Parks Using Cross-Cultural Adaptation And Communication Framing, Adriana Salas
Developing A Sustainable Ecotourism Foundation In Indonesian National Parks Using Cross-Cultural Adaptation And Communication Framing, Adriana Salas
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Previous research on ecotourism in Southeast Asia has focused on its positive and negative effects for conservation. However, the focus in this particular study is to look at what it takes to run a successful ecotourism site in four diverse areas in Indonesia using communication elements like cross-cultural adaptation and communication framing. Communication should be used as a baseline for a successful site and should be used as the most useful tool to address issues and challenges in ecotourism project development.
A successful ecotourism site must carefully look at how their ideas and programs are framed. Ecotourism must also create …
Two Fundamental Building Blocks To Provide Quick Reaction Capabilities For The Department Of Defense, Daniel Alan Uppenkamp
Two Fundamental Building Blocks To Provide Quick Reaction Capabilities For The Department Of Defense, Daniel Alan Uppenkamp
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
The Department of Defense (DoD) has a need for long-term development efforts in conjunction with short-term development efforts. Ideally, Quick Reaction Capabilities (QRC) would be able to make use of the same processes that are used for Acquisition Programs (AP) with a few modifications to accommodate the accelerated schedule. Unfortunately, APs have a more fundamental problem with both the development process and the development framework. In August of 2007, the agile development process and modular, open source framework discussed in this thesis were two key factors that enabled the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to successfully deploy AngelFire in support …
Detection Of Microorganisms Using Maldi And Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry, Juaneka Monet Hayes
Detection Of Microorganisms Using Maldi And Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry, Juaneka Monet Hayes
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Matrix-assisted laser ablation desorption ionization MALDI and ion mobility (IM) MALDI mass spectrometry (MS) were used for the detection and identification of microorganisms. MALDI MS is an analytical tool that separates ions by their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) and is routinely used for bioanalysis because of its sensitivity, selectivity, general applicability, and tolerance to impurities. Ion mobility is a gas phase technique that separates ions based on their charge and collision cross-section. In this research, MALDI-TOF MS and MALDI-IM-TOF MS analysis were conducted in parallel to assess the effectiveness of MALDI-IM-TOF MS for microorganism identification. Whole cell bacteria Escherichia coli strain …
Developing An Explanatory Model For The Process Of Online Radicalisation And Terrorism, Robyn Torok
Developing An Explanatory Model For The Process Of Online Radicalisation And Terrorism, Robyn Torok
Research outputs 2013
While the use of the internet and social media as a tool for extremists and terrorists has been well documented, understanding the mechanisms at work has been much more elusive. This paper begins with a grounded theory approach guided by a new theoretical approach to power that utilizes both terrorism cases and extremist social media groups to develop an explanatory model of radicalization. Preliminary hypotheses are developed, explored and refined in order to develop a comprehensive model which is then presented. This model utilizes and applies concepts from social theorist Michel Foucault, including the use of discourse and networked power …

A Flexible Rule-Based Framework For Pilot Performance Analysis In Air Combat Simulation Systems, Ömer Faruk Arar, Kürşat Ayan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Air combat simulation systems (ACSSs) are developed to train fighter pilots (trainees) in a virtual combat environment. In general, an ACSS consists of the following stages: planning the scenario, training, flight analysis, and performance evaluation. In this paper, the details of the framework, which is developed to analyze and evaluate the performance of the trainees, is introduced. First, the evaluation criteria for the pilot performance are defined. Next, a dynamic pilot performance evaluation system is developed that can be controlled and modified by experienced instructor pilots (instructors/trainers) to define the performance criteria details using predefined evaluation parameters. The evaluation of …
Amplifying Conjugated Polymers For Fluorescent Chemosensing, Deepa Pangeni
Amplifying Conjugated Polymers For Fluorescent Chemosensing, Deepa Pangeni
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Chemo- and biosensors based on fluorescent conjugated polymers benefit from greater detection sensitivity due to amplification of the electronic perturbations produced by analyte binding. This amplification stems from the exciton-transporting properties of conjugated polymers. In the conventional sensor design paradigm, excitons migrate from the bulk of the polymer to the analyte binding sites which can be either fluorescence quenching sites (turn-off sensors) or lower energy fluorophores (turn-on sensors). In this dissertation, we proposed an alternative design paradigm when analyte binding creates a higher energy gap site in the polymer backbone. In the case of isolated polymer chains in dilute solution, …
Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar Signal Processing For Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Operating Shallow Water, Patricia E. Giardina
Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar Signal Processing For Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Operating Shallow Water, Patricia E. Giardina
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The goal of the research was to develop best practices for image signal processing method for InSAS systems for bathymetric height determination. Improvements over existing techniques comes from the fusion of Chirp-Scaling a phase preserving beamforming techniques to form a SAS image, an interferometric Vernier method to unwrap the phase; and confirming the direction of arrival with the MUltiple SIgnal Channel (MUSIC) estimation technique. The fusion of Chirp-Scaling, Vernier, and MUSIC lead to the stability in the bathymetric height measurement, and improvements in resolution. This method is computationally faster, and used less memory then existing techniques.
A Lexicographic Product Cancellation Property For Digraphs, Kendall Manion
A Lexicographic Product Cancellation Property For Digraphs, Kendall Manion
Theses and Dissertations
There are four prominent product graphs in graph theory: Cartesian, strong, direct, and lexicographic. Of these four product graphs, the lexicographic product graph is the least studied. Lexicographic products are not commutative but still have some interesting properties. This paper begins with basic definitions of graph theory, including the definition of a graph, that are needed to understand theorems and proofs that come later. The paper then discusses the lexicographic product of digraphs, denoted $G \circ H$, for some digraphs $G$ and $H$. The paper concludes by proving a cancellation property for the lexicographic product of digraphs $G$, $H$, $A$, …

The growth in the use of computers in all aspects of our lives has continued to increase to the point where desktop, laptop, netbook or tablet computers are now almost essential in the way that we communicate and work. As a result of this, and the fact that these devices have a limited lifespan, enormous numbers of computers are being disposed of at the end of their useful life by individuals or/and organisations. As the cost of computing has reduced, the level of ‘consumerisation’ has increased together with the requirement for mobility. This has led to an increasing use of …

Cyberterrorism: Addressing The Challenges For Establishing An International Legal Framework, Krishna Prasad
Australian Counter Terrorism Conference
The increase of international cyberterrorism in recent years has resulted in computer-based criminal activities that generate worldwide fear, destruction and disruption. National laws and policies that address cyberterrorism are mainly limited to developed nations and are not cohesive in managing 21st century cyberterrorism. Given the absence of an international legal framework to address cyberterrorism, authorities and governments around the world face extreme challenges in finding and prosecuting those responsible for cyberterrorism. This article argues for the need for a cohesive international legal framework; highlights key elements to establish an effective international legal framework; and identifies existing international treaties and cross-border …

Digital forensics procedures should be developed to obtain digital evidence with regard to legal requirements such as admissibility, authenticity, completeness, reliability and believability. On the other hand, Trojan banking malware incident has grown significantly and creates a great threat to online banking users globally. This type of malware is known to use anti-forensic technique to avoid forensic detection. Moreover, there are numerous works and researches that impose the drawbacks on post-mortem forensics approach in dealing with evidence that only resided on non-persistence memory or non-volatile memory. There are works that reveal the disadvantage of live-response approach on incident response that …
The Regulation Of Space And Cyberspace: One Coin, Two Sides, Brett Biddington
The Regulation Of Space And Cyberspace: One Coin, Two Sides, Brett Biddington
Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference
In the 1960s, during some very tense days in the Cold War the United States of America (USA) and the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics (USSR) brokered a deal in the United Nations for a treaty regime to govern human activities in outer space. This regime has served well enough for almost 50 years. In recent years, however, fears of space weaponisation, the proliferation of space debris in the Low Earth Orbits (LEO) and increasing demands on the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) have led to demands for regulatory reform. Some nations now consider space to be the fourth domain of modern …
Exterminating The Cyber Flea: Irregular Warfare Lessons For Cyber Defence, Ben Whitham
Exterminating The Cyber Flea: Irregular Warfare Lessons For Cyber Defence, Ben Whitham
Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference
Traditional approaches to tactical Computer Network Defence (CND), drawn from the lessons and doctrine of conventional warfare, are based on a team of deployed security professionals countering the adversary’s cyber forces. The concept of the adversary in cyberspace does not fit neatly into the conventional military paradigms. Rather than fighting an identifiable foe, cyber adversaries are clandestine, indistinguishable from legitimate users or external services, operate across state boundaries, and from safe havens that provide sanctuary from prosecution. The defender also faces imbalances with rules of engagement and a severe disparity between the cost of delivering the defence and the attackers …
Creating A Counter-Insurgency Plan: Elements Required Based Upon A Comparative Analysis Of Research Findings, William J. Bailey
Creating A Counter-Insurgency Plan: Elements Required Based Upon A Comparative Analysis Of Research Findings, William J. Bailey
Australian Security and Intelligence Conference
The development of a counter-insurgency doctrine is an evolutionary process: no two insurgencies are the same. However, certain fundamental principals remain consistent and these can be applied to meet the required circumstances. The creation of an overarching plan encompassing a combination of military, political and social actions under the strong control of a single authority is central. Therefore, understanding the basics allows for the development of a tactical strategy based upon a structured plan. Compiling the ‘Plan’ should be based upon the lessons learnt from the past. To this end, the methodology used is supported by a literature review and …
The Emergence Of Boko Haram: An Analysis Of Terrorist Characteristics, Peter L. Lacey
The Emergence Of Boko Haram: An Analysis Of Terrorist Characteristics, Peter L. Lacey
Australian Counter Terrorism Conference
Boko Haram (BH) is a Nigerian extremist group which emerged only in the last decade, but has rapidly established a reputation for violence. This paper reviews the development and behaviour of BH in recent years, concluding that the group’s activities meet the definition of terrorism as systematic use of fear-evoking violence against civilians to achieve political goals. This characterisation is justified in terms of four definitional elements of terrorism, and further supported by comparison of BH with contemporary terrorist groups such as Abu Sayyaf Group and Caucasus Emirate, which espouse an ostensibly similar ideology. BH should not be mistaken for …
Applying Feature Selection To Reduce Variability In Keystroke Dynamics Data For Authentication Systems, Mark Abernethy, Shri Rai
Applying Feature Selection To Reduce Variability In Keystroke Dynamics Data For Authentication Systems, Mark Abernethy, Shri Rai
Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference
Authentication systems enable the verification of claimed identity. Password-based authentication systems are ubiquitous even though such systems are amenable to numerous attack vectors and are therefore responsible for a large number of security breaches. Biometrics has been increasingly researched and used as an alternative to password-based systems. There are a number of alternative biometric characteristics that can be used for authentication purposes, each with different positive and negative implementation factors. Achieving a successful authentication performance requires effective data processing. This study investigated the use of keystroke dynamics for authentication purposes. A feature selection process, based on normality statistics, was applied …

The Tallinn Manual will be released in February 2013 and makes a significant step towards defining the concepts of cyber warfare. The early draft of the manual is available and the expert working party have interpreted the existing international agreements, instruments and conventions and applied them to the field of cyber warfare. The manual makes a number of interpretations on the legal position of civilians and other parties. The manual makes it clear that the existing conventions are applicable and that civilian / religious and medical systems should be viewed as non-combatants in a cyber conflict. In the kinetic warfare …
Fate And Reactivity Of Natural And Manufactured Nanoparticles In Soil/Water Environments, Allison Vandevoort
Fate And Reactivity Of Natural And Manufactured Nanoparticles In Soil/Water Environments, Allison Vandevoort
All Dissertations
Nanoparticles (NPs), < 100 nm in diameter, make up the smallest component of solid material. This small size often causes increased reactivity in soil/water environments, which is true for both natural NPs, such as very fine clay particles, and for manufactured nanoparticles, such as silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). As the importance of these particles is more widely recognized, and as manufactured nanoparticles, especially AgNPs, are increasing in production, it is essential to consider their effect on terrestrial and aquatic environments. The studies presented in this dissertation show that both the physicochemical characteristics of the NPs (e.g., particle size, surface coating, elemental composition), as well as soil-water interfacial chemistry (e.g., ionic strength, ligand concentration, pH), are instrumental in predicting environmental fate and reactivity.
Ligand type and concentration were especially important in NP reactivity and bioavailability. Using the hard/soft acid/base concept, the effect of phosphate ligand (hard base) on Fe/Al (hard acid) oxyhydroxide natural NPs was investigated in Chapters 2 and 3. Adding phosphate to soil NPs and reference nano-minerals (Fe-(oxyhydr)oxides and kaolinite) caused coagulation or dispersion, changing the particle size of the NPs, as well as affecting the amount of phosphate in its bioavailable (i.e., dissolved) form. A review of the literature in Chapters 1 and 3 revealed that changes in the soil conditions, and therefore, soil colloids/NPs (e.g., increasing organic …

Hardware-Software Co-Design, Acceleration And Prototyping Of Control Algorithms On Reconfigurable Platforms, Desta Kumsa Edosa
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Differential equations play a significant role in many disciplines of science and engineering. Solving and implementing Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) and partial Differential Equations (PDEs) effectively are very essential as most complex dynamic systems are modeled based on these equations. High Performance Computing (HPC) methodologies are required to compute and implement complex and data intensive applications modeled by differential equations at higher speed. There are, however, some challenges and limitations in implementing dynamic system, modeled by non-linear ordinary differential equations, on digital hardware. Modeling an integrator involves data approximation which results in accuracy error if data values are not considered …

Potentially Polluting Marine Sites Geodb: An S-100 Geospatial Database As An Effective Contribution To The Protection Of The Marine Environment, Giuseppe Masetti, Brian R. Calder, Lee Alexander
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Potentially Polluting Marine Sites (PPMS) are objects on, or areas of, the seabed that may release pollution in the future. A rationale for, and design of, a geospatial database to inventory and manipu-late PPMS is presented. Built as an S-100 Product Specification, it is specified through human-readable UML diagrams and implemented through machine-readable GML files, and includes auxiliary information such as pollution-control resources and potentially vulnerable sites in order to support analyses of the core data. The design and some aspects of implementation are presented, along with metadata requirements and structure, and a perspective on potential uses of the database.

Infrared Cloaking, Stealth, And The Second Law Of Thermodynamics, D. P. Sheehan
Infrared Cloaking, Stealth, And The Second Law Of Thermodynamics, D. P. Sheehan
Physics and Biophysics: Faculty Scholarship
Infrared signature management (IRSM) has been a primary aeronautical concern for over 50 years. Most strategies and technologies are limited by the second law of thermodynamics. In this article, IRSM is considered in light of theoretical developments over the last 15 years that have put the absolute status of the second law into doubt and that might open the door to a new class of broadband IR stealth and cloaking techniques. Following a brief overview of IRSM and its current thermodynamic limitations, theoretical and experimental challenges to the second law are reviewed. One proposal is treated in detail: a high …
