In April 1952, the National Park Service was requested by Representative E. Y. Berry of South Dakota, to consider the possibility of giving national recognition to Wounded Knee Battlefield, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation of South Dakota. Limited Date on the battlefield was presented on April 22 to the Advisory Board on National Parks, Historic Sites, Buildings, and Monuments. The Board asked that a field investigation and report be made by the Service to secure more comprehensive data. It is used chiefly to improve creep strength in steels, although a significant percentage enters into the manufacture of cemented carbide tool bits. Therefore, in this age of mechanized warfare, quality and quantity of defense production depend greatly on tungsten.

Since the advent of the Manhattan Project, more attention is being focused on fluorine compounds. Most of the inorganic fluorides are well known and are being used daily in industry. However, the realm of organic fluorides has not been investi­gated much up until recently, mainly because of the lack of safe and efficient fluorination reactions. Only within the last twenty-five years have reliable, indirect methods of fluorination been developed.

It may not be immediately, it may not be for a generation, it may not be for fifty or more years, and it may be very soon. This is a study of the historical background and the settlement of Baxter Springs, which is located in the southeastern corner of Kansas, one mile from the Oklahoma line and six miles from the Missouri line. It was one of the first settlements in Cherokee County and the first frontier town near the southern boundary line of Kansas.

The town was named tor John L. Baxter who settled upon the present town site in 1849.

During the civil war, a military post for the Union Army was maintained at Baxter Springs. The principal engagement of the war, in this section …
