The Nebraska State Geological Survey is primarily concerned with the stratigraphic classification of the Tertiary lithologic units in this state. The purpose of this thesis is to study the subsurface stratigraphy of the state of Montana from information acquired from well logs, composite logs, and measured sections. Underground stratigraphy is important for the intelligent prospecting for oil, gas, or water. A knowledge of the strata beneath us can be gathered only by measurements of numerous outcrops or by deep drilling with careful sampling or logging of the formations passed through.

In the oil and fat industry the iodine value is one of the most important criteria in testing for the purity of the substance at hand. According to the amount of iodine absorbed fats are classified as drying, semi-drying, and non-drying oils. If the respective oil possesses and iodine value lying between 130 and 200, it is considered a drying oil; between 95 and 130, a semi-drying oil, and between 1 and 95, a non-drying oil.

Spectra are generally classified as emission or absorption spectra. Whenever a source is radiating, it is producing an emission spectrum. If the source is solid, such as the filament of f lamp, the spectrum is generally continuous, that is there is no interruption on the contlnum of wavelengths. The primary purpose of this paper is to present specific data as a means of explaining the sedimentation conditions at the time of deposition of the Oriskany Sandstone. The data were obtained through the use of laboratory methods upon specimens taken from several outcrops in the vicinity of Monterey, Virginia (see Darton's U.S.G.S. folio No. 51). In addition to the presentation of objective results, the author has attempted to make tentative interpretations of them, based primarily upon textural and shape analysis of the sediment. The history and development of the Nebraska State Museum since 1891 have been summarized in a preliminary manner up to 1925 in the first number of Volume I of the Bulletin of the Nebraska State Museum.1 Since 1927, the collections of the Nebraska State Museum, The University of Nebraska, have been housed in a new building, Morrill Hall, on the city campus of The University of Nebraska. Summary

The Friedel-Crafts reaction has been used in the preparation of thiophene ketones, some of which were hitherto unknown. Certain limitations of the reaction have been noted.

The mercuration of thiophene ketones has been systematically investigated for the first time. Many new halogen derivatives of benzothienone have been synthesized. These were employed in the elucidation of the structure of a complex mercurial· derived from this ketone.

A new modification of an old reaction has been developed whereby benzothienone can be mercurated quickly and almost quantitatively. Interesting derivatives of this little known ketone have been synthesized. Chief among these are the …

Rhenium properties offer many interesting possibilities, therefore any ores containing rhenium would be of considerable value. Its close relationship to manganese in the periodic table led to the belief that manganese ores would be an excellent place to search for the metal. Investigation of the literature of rhenium revealed that no ore was known to contain more than 0.001 per cent of rhenium.
