A New Fossil Bovid From Nebraska With Notice Of A New Bison Quarry In Texas, C. Bertrand Schultz

An interesting and unique bovid skull was reported to the staff of the University of Nebraska State Museum in 1938 by Mr. Alvin McReynolds of Nehawka, Nebraska. The specimen was found in 1933 in a ravine north of Nehawka by Messrs. Merritt and Harold Dodson, brothers. Although the skull was not in place, it appears to have been washed out of a nearby Pleistocene clay deposit by floodwaters. The specimen is well preserved and is of a dark brown, almost black color. In 1938 it was loaned to the Museum for study and photographing but was not obtained as a …

All of the metals have definite melting points. When a metal is heated above the melting point, it exists as a liquid. Now if the melt is allowed to cool, it will solidify when a temperature corresponding to the melting point is reached.

However, if one metal is added to another metal, both of which are mutually soluble in the liquid state, a certain effect can be noted. The melt will not solid­ify when the melting point of the pure metal is reached, but will freeze at a lower temperature.

The present work was undertaken to check the results of Dr. R.A. Leutgoeb in the electrolytic preparation and also to further the separation of glucuronic acid from the electrolyte.

Because up to 1938 no efficient chemical method of glucuronic acid had been developed. Dr. Leutgoeb undertook to remedy this lack by making use of electrolysis for a preparation from alpha methyl-glucoside. Such a chemical method is needed if biochemists wish to successfully continue work on the metabolism and deoxioating functions of glucuronic acid. This paper represents the results of almost continuous research by the Nebraska State Geological Survey on Tertiary stratigraphy in Nebraska during a perIod of more than 10 years, with special attention to the present acceptable stratigraphic nomenclature. Cogent reasons are presented for the retention of such well-known names as White River, Arikaree, and Ogallala, all now redefined and elevated to group ranking. “Loup Fork” and “Loup River,” "Nebraska beds", and “Republican River" are considered obsolete. The application of fossil seed zones to problems of correlation is noted. The table of Tertiary Formations of Nebraska summarizes the Tertiary stratigraphy in Nebraska.
