Parameterization Of The Cool Skin Of The Ocean And Of The Air-Ocean Gas Transfer On The Basis Of Modeling Surface Renewal, Alexander Soloviev, Peter Schlüssel
Parameterization Of The Cool Skin Of The Ocean And Of The Air-Ocean Gas Transfer On The Basis Of Modeling Surface Renewal, Alexander Soloviev, Peter Schlüssel
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Heat and gas transport in molecular sublayers at the air-sea interface is governed by similar laws. A model of renewal type based on the physics of molecular sublayers allows the derivation of a parameterization of the temperature difference across the cool skin of the ocean and of the coefficient of the direct air-sea gas transfer. The surface Richardson number controls the transition from convective instability to wind-induced instability (“rollers” on breaking wavelets) and the Keulegan number controls the transition from the regime of rollers to long-wave breaking. A critical value of the surface Richardson number and of a nondimensional constant …

Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) is used to study the thermodynamics of assembly of the three DNA oligonucleotides S1 (5'GCCTGCCACCGC), S2 (5'-GCGGTGCGTCCG), and S3AA (5'-CGGACGAAGCAGGC) to form a three-way junction (TWJ) complex consisting of three double-helical arms radiating from a junction region having two unpaired adenosines in one strand (S3AA). The thermodynamics of assembly were measured for three different orders of addition of the component oligonucleotides at four temperatures between 10 and 25 degrees C. At each temperature studied, the overall values of Delta H, Delta S degrees, and Delta G degrees for assembly of the complex from the component single …

The health and future of the earth's ecological systems (Dailey and Ehrlich 1992), their link to the well being of communities and nations (Raven 19901, and the ever-increasing rate of loss of species, communities, and ecological systems (Myers 1993) are among issues drawing biological diversity into the mainstream of conservation worldwide. Yet. in North America, there is no single, established priority in the conservation of biological diversity. In recent years, a great deal of attention has been paid to the problem of tropical and temperate deforestation in part because of profound consequences to the conservation of biological diversity (Harris 1984, …

Application Of A Modified Analytical Derivatization Method To The Determination Of Microbial Metabolites In Aquifer Systems, Jie Lu
Masters Theses
The geochemical evolution of Low Molecular Weight Fatty Acids (LMWFA's) in various ground water samples and aquifer solid samples from both contaminated and uncontaminated sites has been studied. An improved analytical method has been established for both qualitative and quantitative determination of LMWFA's. The low molecular weight (LMW) organic acids are metabolic intermediates of the oxidative biodegradation of hydrocarbon contaminants. The hydrocarbons are believed to be the electron donors in these redox reactions. Formic and acetic acids were found to be the major LMWFA's in these ground water samples and aquifer solid samples. Their concentrations increase as the redox condition …

Measurement Of Blood Flow In Reflected Muco-Gingival Tissue Flaps In Cats : Using The Radiolabeled Microsphere Method, Gary T. Wuchenrich
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Blood flow to the maxilla and mandible may vary due to differences in vascular supply and in physiologic, metabolic and pathologic conditions. In general it is accepted that oral tissues have an abundant blood supply; however, there is little information quantifying blood flow to these regions. In this study, the maxillary tissues were chosen to measure the blood flow in attached and reflected gingival tissue in adult cats using the radiolabeled microsphere method.
Sixteen cats with permanent dentition, clean mouths, and without inflamed gingiva upon visual inspection were used and divided into two groups. Group 1 consisted of six cats …

On The Linear Extrapolation To Low Doses, Robert Katz, Michael P. R. Waligórski
On The Linear Extrapolation To Low Doses, Robert Katz, Michael P. R. Waligórski
Robert Katz Publications
While radiobiological data are conveniently fitted by a linear quadratic formula to data of limited dynamic range at doses typically exceeding 1 Gy, they are extrapolated linearly to doses below a milligray for the evaluation of low dose RBEs. However a single relativistic electron passing through a cell nucleus deposits a “dose” there in the neighborhood of a milligray. The validity of the linear extrapolation then rests on the demonstration that a single electron transit through a cell nucleus can cause inactivation or mutation or can lead to cancer induction. The extrapolation made is a huge one, of some three …

Spatio-Temporal Pattern Recognition Using Hidden Markov Models, Kenneth H. Fielding
Spatio-Temporal Pattern Recognition Using Hidden Markov Models, Kenneth H. Fielding
Theses and Dissertations
A new spatio-temporal method for identifying 3D objects found in 2D image sequences is presented. The Hidden Markov Model technique is used as a spatio-temporal classification algorithm to identify 3D objects by the temporal changes in observed shape features. A new information theoretic argument is developed that proves identifying objects based on image sequences can lead to higher classification accuracies than single look methods. A new distance measure is proposed that analyzes the performance of Hidden Markov Models in a multi-class pattern recognition problem. A three class problem identifying moving light display objects provides experimental verification of the sequence processing …
The Application Of Stereolithography To The Creation Of Molecular Models Of Amiloride And Its Analogues, Thomas John Busanic
The Application Of Stereolithography To The Creation Of Molecular Models Of Amiloride And Its Analogues, Thomas John Busanic
Theses
Stereolithography, a process by which a computer-guided Ultraviolet (UV) laser is applied onto a liquid monomer resin to form a solid polymer, was used to create solid models of amiloride and two of its analogues. The Cartesian coordinates used as input for the orientation of each atom in a molecule were calculated using ab initio molecular orbital theory. Since the structures of the molecules are calculated in this fashion, they represent a more accurate representation of the molecules than that provided by standard molecular modeling kits.
The original purpose of this work was to assist a blind chemist in appreciating …
Parallel Exact Enumeration Of Self-Avoiding Walk On Cubic Lattices And Its Applications To Protein Folding Studies, Anek Vorapanya
Parallel Exact Enumeration Of Self-Avoiding Walk On Cubic Lattices And Its Applications To Protein Folding Studies, Anek Vorapanya
Theses
Exact enumeration of self-avoiding walk on many lattices have been studied extensively recently. Even a short chain polymer (about 30 monomers) represented as a chain of cubic lattice sites requires a considerable amount of computer time to exhaustively search for all unique conformations. However, self-avoiding walk process can be modified such that it exhibits a high degree of independence among subprocesses. Parallel implementation of such subprocesses can reduce a great amount of enumeration time. Parallel enumeration makes longer chain enumeration possible.
Enumerating only unique conformations requires that all rotation and mirror conformations be removed. An algorithm to avoid generating such …

This project begins by mentioning the geography of California and the definition of a wetland. The characteristics of a wetland can be divided into two types, saltwater and freshwater. California has patches of both types and for this reason which should focus our attention on both types. This study looks at how wetland acreage in Merced County has changed due to changes in land use in the last forty-five years. I have examined two years in Merced County History, 1946 and 1990. In doing so, I have looked at total wetland, agriculture and urban acreage within my study area. The …

How Amaranth Grain Affects Total Body Weight And Major Organ Weight In The Mongolian Gerbil, Rhoshonda Montgomery- Conway
How Amaranth Grain Affects Total Body Weight And Major Organ Weight In The Mongolian Gerbil, Rhoshonda Montgomery- Conway
McCabe Thesis Collection
Purpose and Objectives
The purpose of this research is to determine effects of amaranth grain of the body weight and organ weight of the Mongolian gerbil. The literature research indicates that amaranth results in physiological changes that appear to be species-specific rather than general. Since the gerbil is a granivorous animal, it is hypothesized that amaranth will be completely digested and that its nutritional quality will maintain normal to increased growth. While the results of this study cannot be applied to other animals, information has been gained with regard to the influence of amaranth grain on the Mongolian gerbil.
Electrochemical Detection Of Aliphatic Sulfur Compounds In Liquid Coal Extracts, Samuel Myers
Electrochemical Detection Of Aliphatic Sulfur Compounds In Liquid Coal Extracts, Samuel Myers
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The presence of sulfur compounds in coal is a serious environmental problem that affects the coal industry. This problem is due to the fact that organic sulfur is not separated or removed during any physical cleaning process. Organic sulfur is removed only during a more costly chemical desulfurization process. The kinds of organosulfur compounds in coal are generally known, but the quantity of each type of compound and the distribution of these compounds throughout the coal matrix has not been studied extensively. The objective of this research was to investigate the more reactive and chemically labile organosulfur compounds in liquid …

Stable oxygen isotope ratios (δ18O) of coral skeletons are influenced by ambient water temperature and by the oxygen isotope ratio in the surrounding sea water, which, in turn, is linked to evaporation (salinity) and precipitation. To investigate this relationship more thoroughly, we collected hourly temperature data from the Hen and Chickens Reef in the Florida Keys between 1975 and 1988 and compared them to the δ18O of Montastraea annularis skeleton that grew during the same interval. To ensure that we obtained the correct oxygen isotopic range in the skeleton we typically sampled the coral at a …

Details of schemes for two tabletop size x‐ray lasers that require a high‐intensity short‐pulse driving laser are discussed. The first is based on rapid recombination following optical‐field ionization. Analytical and numerical calculations of the output properties are presented. Propagation in the confocal geometry is discussed and a solution for x‐ray lasing in Li‐like N at 247 Å is described. Since the calculated gain coefficient depends strongly on the electron temperature, the methods of calculating electron heating following field ionization are discussed. Recent experiments aimed at demonstrating lasing in H‐like Li at 135 Å are discussed along with modeling results. The …

Application Of A Maximum Likelihood Processor To Acoustic Backscatter For The Estimation Of Seafloor Roughness Parameters, Zoi-Heleni Michalopoulou, Christian De Moustier
Application Of A Maximum Likelihood Processor To Acoustic Backscatter For The Estimation Of Seafloor Roughness Parameters, Zoi-Heleni Michalopoulou, Christian De Moustier
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Maximum likelihood (ML) estimation is used to extract seafloor roughness parameters from records of acoustic backscatter. The method relies on the Helmholtz–Kirchhoff approximation under the assumption of a power‐law roughness spectrum and on the statistical modeling of bottom reverberation. The result is a globally optimum, highly automated technique that is a useful tool in the context of seafloor classification via remote acoustic sensing. The general geometry of the Sea Beam bathymetric system is incorporated into the design of the ML processor in order to make it applicable to real acoustic data collected by this system. The processor is initially tested …
Classification Characteristics Of Som And Art2, J. Aleshunas, D. St. Clair, W. Bond
Classification Characteristics Of Som And Art2, J. Aleshunas, D. St. Clair, W. Bond
Computer Science Technical Reports
Artificial neural network algorithms were originally designed to model human neural activities. They attempt to recreate the processes involved in such activities as learning, short term memory, and long term memory. Two widely used artificial neural network algorithms are the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and the Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART2). Each was designed to simulate a particular biological neural activity. Both can be used as unsupervised data classifiers.
This paper compares performance characteristics of two unsupervised artificial neural network architectures; the SOM and the ART2 networks. The primary factors analyzed were classification accuracy, sensitivity to data noise, and sensitivity to the …
Density And Feeding Habits Of Elk And Deer In Relation To Livestock Disturbance, Kenneth Clegg
Density And Feeding Habits Of Elk And Deer In Relation To Livestock Disturbance, Kenneth Clegg
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Elk (Cervus elaphus) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) density and foraging behavior were monitored in conjunction with disturbance by livestock (cattle and sheep) from 1991 to 1993 at Deseret Land and Livestock property near Woodruff, Utah. Elk and deer densities declined by as much as 92% in response to introduction of livestock, while associated areas where livestock were absent did not show this response. Biting rates and bite sizes were estimated and used to determine instantaneous intake rate. These measures were similar between pastures with cattle present or absent in 1992 but differed in 1993 for …
The Pharmacodynamics And Toxicodynamics Of Inotropic Drugs In Calves With Natural And Artificial Hearts, Scott D. Everett
The Pharmacodynamics And Toxicodynamics Of Inotropic Drugs In Calves With Natural And Artificial Hearts, Scott D. Everett
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Inotropic support for the failing myocardium as the therapy for congestive heart failure (CHF) is intended to achieve an increase in cardiac output via positive responses in myocardial contractility and vasodilation. A novel approach to differentiate these two responses is the use of an animal with an implanted total artificial heart (TAH). Three inotropic drugs, dobutamine, enoximone, and pimobendan, were tested in eight animals with their natural heart intact and five animals implanted with a TAH. Baseline values of the TAH and natural heart (NH) were compared to determine their hemodynamic similarities. Each of the three drugs was given randomly …
The Response Of Five Tropical Plant Species To Natural Solar Ultraviolet-B Radiation, Peter S. Searles
The Response Of Five Tropical Plant Species To Natural Solar Ultraviolet-B Radiation, Peter S. Searles
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Tropical regions currently receive the highest global levels of solar ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 280-320 nm) even without ozone depletion. Thus, the influence of natural, present-day UV-B irradiance in the tropics was examined for five tropical species, including three native rainforest tree species and two economically important species. Solar UV-B radiation conditions were obtained vi using either a UV-B excluding plastic film or a near-ambient UV-B transmitting film in a small clearing on Barro Colorado Island (BCI), Panama (9 ° N). Significant differences were often exhibited as increased foliar UV-B absorbing compounds, increased leaf mass per area, and reduced leaf blade …

Holocene sediments from intertidal and shallow subtidal zones in Bahia la Choya, Mexico exhibit significant differences based on their mineralogical content, constituent composition, textural parameters, and foraminiferal assemblages. The intertidal sediments are characterized by low calcium carbonate content, being dominated by quartz, and are moderately well sorted and coarse skewed with a fine mean grain size {Mz = 2.73 phi}. Total numbers {living and dead} of benthonic Foraminifera per ml of sediment are relatively low (12/ml) in the intertidal zones. In contrast, the subtidal sediments are characterized by high calcium carbonate content, being dominated by molluscan shell fragments, and …
Effect Of Iron Binding On The Ability Of Crocidolite To Cause Dna Single-Strand Breaks, Jeanne Ann Hardy
Effect Of Iron Binding On The Ability Of Crocidolite To Cause Dna Single-Strand Breaks, Jeanne Ann Hardy
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Fibrous carcinogens, such as crocidolite asbestos, are known to catalyze many of the same reactions as iron, namely O2 consumption, generation of reduced oxygen species, and damage to DNA, such as strand breaks, and modifications of bases. Upon inhalation, fibers are also known to become coated with an iron-rich material. The mechanism by which this iron is bound to fibers in the lung is not known, and the effect of this additional iron on the reactivity of the fibers is also not well understood. The studies described here were undertaken to elucidate the abilities of crocidolite asbestos, in its …
