Coastal Eutrophication Near The Mississippi River Delta, R. Eugene Turner, Nancy Rabalais Apr 1994

Coastal Eutrophication Near The Mississippi River Delta, R. Eugene Turner, Nancy Rabalais

Faculty Publications

CHANGES in delivery of river-borne nutrients such as dissolved phosphate, nitrate and silicate, owing to land-use changes and anthropogenic emissions, are known to result in eutrophication1— enhanced phytoplankton blooms—and more severe hypoxic events2–1 in many enclosed bays and seas. Although similar ecological effects might be expected on continental shelves, the occurrence of such eutrophication has remained unresolved5. Here we present evidence of eutrophication of the continental shelf near the outflow of the Mississippi river, obtained by quantifying biologically bound silica (BSi) in diatom remnants within dated sediment cores. BSi accumulation rates are greatest in water depths of 20 to 50 …

Classification Characteristics Of Som And Art2, J. J. Aleshunas, Daniel C. St. Clair, William E. Bond Apr 1994

Classification Characteristics Of Som And Art2, J. J. Aleshunas, Daniel C. St. Clair, William E. Bond

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Artificial neural network algorithms were originally designed to model human neural activities. They attempt to recreate the processes involved in such activities as learning, short term memory, and long-term memory. Two widely used unsupervised artificial neural network algorithms are the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART2). Each was designed to simulate a particular biological neural activity. Both can be used as unsupervised data classifiers. This paper compares performance characteristics of two unsupervised artificial neural network architectures; the SOM and the ART2 networks. The primary factors analyzed were classification accuracy, sensitivity to data noise, and sensitivity of the algorithm …

Genetic Algorithms And Artificial Life, Melanie Mitchell, Stephanie Forrest

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Genetic algorithms are computational models of evolution that play a central role in many artificial-life models. We review the history and current scope of research on genetic algorithms in artificial life, giving illustrative examples in which the genetic algorithm is used to study how learning and evolution interact, and to model ecosystems, immune system, cognitive systems, and social systems. We also outline a number of open questions and future directions for genetic algorithms in artificial-life research

The Speciation Of Dissolved Uranium In Marine Waters, Darrin Kent Mann Apr 1994

The Speciation Of Dissolved Uranium In Marine Waters, Darrin Kent Mann

OES Theses and Dissertations

Uranium has been used extensively for quantifying geochemical processes in the marine environment. Due to its low concentration, about 3.3 μg/1, some form of preconcentration is required for analysis. The two most widely used pre-concentration schemes are co-precipitation with iron hydroxide, and chelating ion exchange chromatography. These methods were developed by following the behavior of inorganic uranium isotopes and seemed to give identical results. However, when used for trace metal analysis, these methods have been shown to extract different fractions from the same sample. Chelex-100 resin removes only inorganic or weakly bound trace metals from a solution, while the precipitates …

On The Low-Frequency Current And Temperature Fluctuations Along The Shelf Break In The South Atlantic Bight, Sunny Yu Wu Apr 1994

On The Low-Frequency Current And Temperature Fluctuations Along The Shelf Break In The South Atlantic Bight, Sunny Yu Wu

OES Theses and Dissertations

Current and temperature data collected along the shelf edge in the South Atlantic Bight were analyzed using a spectral analysis technique. The power spectra of both alongshore currents and temperatures (upon removal of seasonal trends) in the mid- to lower water column suggest a significant energy peak at 28 days. The spatial characteristics of the fluctuations around this period band were determined using the frequency domain empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis applied to the concurrent current and temperature records. Consistent results were obtained from the upstream side of the Charleston Bump. Around the 28-day period, temperature seems to have little …

Iodate Transformation By Marine Phytoplankton, Ajcharaporn Udomkit Apr 1994

Iodate Transformation By Marine Phytoplankton, Ajcharaporn Udomkit

OES Theses and Dissertations

The speciation and distribution of iodine in the oceans are partly under biological control. Phytoplankton are suspected to mediate the transformation of iodate to iodide via reduction by the enzyme nitrate reductase. However, there has been no direct evidence to support this hypothesis.

The influence of phytoplankton on the speciation of iodine was examined with emphasis on the transformation of iodate to iodide. Six cultures of marine phytoplankton: Skeletonema costatum, Dunaliella tertiolecta, Amphidinium carterae, Tetraselmis levis, Emiliania huxleyi, and Synechococcus sp. , have been examined for their ability to take up and reduce iodate under a reduced nitrate environment. In …

Diamond Thin Film Sensors For Hypersonic Flow Studies, Bhaskar Kumar Bulusu Apr 1994

Diamond Thin Film Sensors For Hypersonic Flow Studies, Bhaskar Kumar Bulusu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Conventional metal film sensors can measure flow instabilities of the order of 60 kHz. The turbulence fluctuations in the hypersonic regime are of the order of 200- 400 kHz. To measure these fluctuations, sensors with an enhanced frequency response are required. Therefore, it is required to identify the parameters to enhance the frequency response. These include parameters such as the temperature sensitivity, the resistivity, the thermal conductivity, the diffusivity, specific heat capacity and the geometric size and shape of the film and the substrate. A selection of materials was then carried out to maximize the frequency response. Diamond was identified …

Sporomorphs And Palynological Interpretations Of Lower Oligocene Strata From The Eastern Gulf Coast, U.S.A., Lisa M. Reeves

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The Vicksburg Group in the eastern Gulf Coast of the United States belongs to one of the most complete and continuous Paleogene strata in the world. Previous studies in this region have neglected the rich palynomorph assemblages of the Lower Oligocene units of the Vicksburg Group. Four samples from Wayne County Mississippi were analyzed for palynological information on the Vicksburg Group. The initial objective of the study was to understand the principles of palynology and the basis for sporomorph identification. A minimum of 300 specimens were counted per slide to determine the distribution of sporomorphs in the sediments. Two hundred …

Bulletin 4283 - Nitrogen Fertilisers For Cereal Production, M. G. Mason Mar 1994

Bulletin 4283 - Nitrogen Fertilisers For Cereal Production, M. G. Mason

Bulletins 4000 -

Because fertiliser prices are high, it is important to understand what affects the response to fertilisers by crops.

Among the many factors influencing crop response to nitrogen applications, the most important are the season, soil type, paddock history, time of application and source of nitrogen. Before deciding whether to use nitrogen on a cereal crop, which source to use and at what rate, you need some understanding of how these factors work.

Greatest responses to nitrogen fertilisers can be expected in areas with a relatively long growing season. In such areas light soils with a low nitrogen status give the …

A Rationale For Coastal Wetland Restoration Through Spoil Bank Management In Louisiana, Usa, R. Eugene Turner, E. M. Swenson, J. M. Lee Mar 1994

A Rationale For Coastal Wetland Restoration Through Spoil Bank Management In Louisiana, Usa, R. Eugene Turner, E. M. Swenson, J. M. Lee

Faculty Publications

The rationale and outline of an implementation plan for restoring coastal wetlands in Louisiana is presented. The rationale for the plan is based on reversing the consequences of documented cause-and-effect relationships between wetland loss and hydrologic change. The main feature is to modify the extensive interlocking network of dredged spoil deposits, or spoil banks, by reestablishing a more natural water flow at moderate flow velocity (/sec). Guidelines for site selection from thousands of potential sites are proposed. Examples of suitable sites are given for intermediate marshes. These sites exhibit rapid deterioration following partial or complete hydrologic impoundment, implying a strong …

Fundamental Principles Of Plant Pathology For Agricultural Producers, Paul C. Vincelli Mar 1994

Fundamental Principles Of Plant Pathology For Agricultural Producers, Paul C. Vincelli

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

All crop plants produced in Kentucky have the potential to become diseased under certain conditions. Diseases of crops can affect yield and/or quality of the harvested commodity. This can impact profitability and increase the risks of farming.

A plant is diseased when it is affected by some agent that interferes with its normal development. Some disorders are caused by noninfectious factors, such as temperature extremes or nutrient deficiencies. However, this publication focuses on diseases caused by infectious microorganisms.

Diseased plants exhibit a variety of symptoms. These can include stunting, yellowing, wilting, twisting, reddening, browning, blighting, root rot, fruit rot, …

Delaying The Development Of Herbicide Resistant Ryegrass By Using Alternative Weed Control Strategies, A. J. Diggle, G. S. Gill, J. E. Holmes Mar 1994

Delaying The Development Of Herbicide Resistant Ryegrass By Using Alternative Weed Control Strategies, A. J. Diggle, G. S. Gill, J. E. Holmes

Biosecurity published reports

Alternative strategies to control ryegrass in wheat lupin rotations are worth approximately 15 dollars per hectare for each 50% reduction achieved in plant or seed numbers. This figure has been calculated for circumstances similar to those found at Wongan Hills, and it holds in all cases where ryegrass is still under control using standard herbicides.

Farmers should adopt any ryegrass strategy in addition to that normally practised, so long as the cost to control ratio is less than $15/ha/50% kill. This applies even where good control is being achieved using grass selective herbicides, regardless of the number of previous applications …
