Hiding Operational Problems That Need To Be Revealed- A Study Linking Environmental Accidents And Product Recalls, Rick Hardcopf, Rachna Shah Jun 2024

Hiding Operational Problems That Need To Be Revealed- A Study Linking Environmental Accidents And Product Recalls, Rick Hardcopf, Rachna Shah

Management Faculty Publications

Purpose:

This study investigates whether a firm that has experienced an environmental accident (EA) is less likely to conduct a product recall. If true, it would indicate that EAs tempt firms to hide operational problems that need to be revealed. The logic is that both events are operational failures that damage a firm’s reputation and share price. Following an EA, a firm may avoid a product recall to avoid providing additional evidence of operational incapability and social irresponsibility and thereby triggering amplified reputational and market penalties.

Research design/methodology/approach:

The dataset is compiled from several public and private sources and includes …

Leveraging Biological Mechanisms In Machine Learning, Kyle J. Rogers Jun 2024

Leveraging Biological Mechanisms In Machine Learning, Kyle J. Rogers

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis integrates biologically-inspired mechanisms into machine learning to develop novel tuning algorithms, gradient abstractions for depth-wise parallelism, and an original bias neuron design. We introduce neuromodulatory tuning, which uses neurotransmitter-inspired bias adjustments to enhance transfer learning in spiking and non-spiking neural networks, significantly reducing parameter usage while maintaining performance. Additionally, we propose a novel approach that decouples the backward pass of backpropagation using layer abstractions, inspired by feedback loops in biological systems, enabling depth-wise training parallelization. We further extend neuromodulatory tuning by designing spiking bias neurons that mimic dopamine neuron mechanisms, leading to the development of volumetric tuning. This …

Production Of The Siderophore Lysochelin In Rich Media Through Maltose-Promoted High-Density Growth Of Lysobacter Sp. 3655, Fang Zhang, Jia Liu, Lin Jiang, Yongbiao Zheng, Lingjun Yu, Liangcheng Du Jun 2024

Production Of The Siderophore Lysochelin In Rich Media Through Maltose-Promoted High-Density Growth Of Lysobacter Sp. 3655, Fang Zhang, Jia Liu, Lin Jiang, Yongbiao Zheng, Lingjun Yu, Liangcheng Du

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Siderophores are produced by bacteria in iron-restricted conditions. However, we found maltose could induce the biosynthesis of the siderophore lysochelin in Lysobacter sp. 3655 in rich media that are not compatible with siderophore production. Maltose markedly promoted cell growth, with over 300% increase in cell density (OD600) when LB medium was added with maltose (LBM). While lysochelin was not detectable when OD600 in LBM was below 5.0, the siderophore was clearly produced when OD600 reached 7.5 and dramatically increased when OD600 was 15.0. Coincidently, the transcription of lysochelin biosynthesis genes was remarkably enhanced following the …

“I Tell Them Generics, But Not The Specifics”: Exploring Tensions Underlying Familial Support For First-Generation Latinx Undergraduate Students, Stephany Cuevas

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Families continue to play an essential role in the experiences of first-generation Latinx undergraduate students and can serve as powerful partners to support student retention and socioemotional wellbeing. This qualitative phenomenological study uses the notion of emerging adulthood to explore how first-generation Latinx undergraduate students (n = 16) conceptualize their families’ role in their college education. Specifically, this study shows that while students describe feeling supported by their families, they also experience distinct and unique tensions tied to this support, which students associate with their first-generation student status. These tensions include (1) the family’s unfamiliarity with college culture; (2) bidirectional …

Rapid, Direct Screening Of Priority Metal Contaminants In Environmental Systems With Reactive 3 D-Printed Cone Spray Ionization-Mass Spectrometry ( 3 D- Pcsi-Ms ), Jonathan Nzubechi Chilaka

Theses and Dissertations

Trace metal species are relatively common in our environment, and although some are essential to sustain life, exposure to elevated levels of toxic metals can detrimentally affect both human and animal health. Correspondingly, monitoring of such contaminants in environmental systems is critical to public safety. While various methods exist for sensitive and selective metal analysis for such applications, there remains a need for a rapid, cost-effective, and, ideally, portable solution for expedited results and more impactful remediation and sustainability initiatives. Here, we investigate the use of 3D-printed cone spray ionization-mass spectrometry (3D-PCSI-MS), a newer, spray-based ambient ionization method, with specialty …

Complement Propagates Visual System Pathology After Traumatic Brain Injury, Davis Marchant Borucki Jun 2024

Complement Propagates Visual System Pathology After Traumatic Brain Injury, Davis Marchant Borucki

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Background: Traumatic brain injury is associated with the development of visual system disorders, including deficits in visual acuity. Visual deficits can present with delay and worsen over time, suggesting that ongoing neuroinflammatory changes contribute to their development and progression. Complement activation is strongly associated with the neuroinflammatory response after TBI and has been shown to contribute to neuronal and synaptic loss. However, the contributions of complement activation after TBI to vision loss remains unclear.

Methods: We employed an open skull controlled cortical impact model of traumatic brain injury in adult male mice to study how TBI affects vision. Animals were …

Mapping The Mess: A Literate Activity Method For Teacher Research On Civic Literacies In Writing Classrooms, Brittany Larsen

Theses and Dissertations

Faced with an increasing need in higher education to address civic issues and prepare students for participation in democratic discussion, rhetoric and writing classrooms have become one space for including civic literacies, and meeting institutional demand for civic engagement. However, the complexities of changing tools, platforms, and means of civic participation require a similarly complex method for investigating teacher and student work and how to approach incorporating civic literacies into the writing and rhetoric classroom. Using a literate activity research method, teachers can incorporate concepts such as divergent uptake to guide their approaches for putting teacher and student materials in …

“Women And Lockean Theory: John Locke, Rachel Speght, And Egalitarian Personhood, Katherine Gillespie, Bas Van Der Vossen Jun 2024

“Women And Lockean Theory: John Locke, Rachel Speght, And Egalitarian Personhood, Katherine Gillespie, Bas Van Der Vossen

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

Liberal political thought affirms the moral equality of all persons. The Lockean tradition within liberalism captures this equality by endowing people with equal natural rights. However, a powerful line of criticism holds that the theory fails to live up to its egalitarian billing by treating men and women differently. This article offers a rational reconstruction of the Lockean position on gender equality, and the rights of women in particular. We propose a novel interpretative method which puts Locke into conversation with a contemporary female author, Rachel Speght. In Speght, we find an interesting argument supporting an egalitarian Lockean view, grounded …

Empowering Family Forestland Owners To Reduce Wildfire Risk, Tom Lininger Jun 2024

Empowering Family Forestland Owners To Reduce Wildfire Risk, Tom Lininger

Georgia Law Review

Wildfire risk is growing in the forested portion of the Wildland-Urban Interface, especially in the Western United States. Some commentators have suggested that the time has come for measures that would reduce the human presence in this area. In certain circumstances, however, family forestland owners have a salutary effect on forest resiliency. The attempt to exclude family forestland owners would create more problems than it would solve. A better strategy would be to assist family forestland owners in fireproofing their residences and improving the health of their forests.
