Traumatic Fat Embolism: Recent Clinical Experience In Combined Arterial Injury And Long Bone Fracture, John F. Lee, Roger F. Smith, Joseph P. Elliott Jr.

Fat embolization is a frequent accompaniment of long bone fracture; however, this phenomenon only occasionally leads to the clinically recognized traumatic fat embolism syndrome. Three recent cases are presented of fat embolization following long bone fractures and associated with penetrating arterial injury. Consequences illustrated ranged from asymptomatic fat globules in the urine, through serious pulmonary insufficiency, to central nervous system damage with death. Treatment should be directed at effective mechanical ventilatory support to avoid hypoxemia.

Clinical Experience With Radioisotopic Powered Cardiac Pacemakers, Nicholas P. D. Smyth, Tomas Hernandez, Alvin Johnson

Significant increase in the useful lifetime of the implantable cardiac pacemaker has been made possible by the development of a radioisotope power source. This paper reports experience with two models, the AEC-ARCO Nu-5 (fixed rate) and the Medtronic Model 9000 (ventricular inhibited demand). Five of the former models were implanted in 1973, and six of the latter more recently. Both types of units have functioned well.

The Relationship Of The Cold Nodule To Carcinoma Of The Thyroid, Douglas M. Evans

Fifty-two cases with histologically proven carcinoma of the thyroid were studied. With some variation as to the expected incidence of the several cell types of tumor, possibly due to the small size of this series, the distribution of these cases encompassed all histologic types. Fifty-three (53%) percent of the cases where pre-operative I131 scans were recorded showed a positive, or "cold" scan. Fifty-five (55%) percent of all lesions showed extension of disease beyond the confines of the thyroid gland. This experience indicates that, although thyroid scintiscans provide useful information to be correlated with other data, there are distinct limitations to …

Metabolic Capabilities Of Sulfur Oxidizing Bacteria And Their Role In Water Pollution, M. I. H. Aleem

This report describes investigations into the physiology of microorganisms that are commonly involved in the oxidation of inorganic sulfur compounds. The metabolic activities of these bacteria play a potent role in several fields of economic importance such as strip mining operations, water pollution, corrosion, metallurgy, petroleum technology and soil fertility processes.

The oxidation of inorganic sulfur compounds was studied in the chemolithotrophs Thiobacillus denitrificans, Thiobacillus A₂, Thiobacillus neapolitanus, and a photolithotroph Rhodopseudomonas palustris. Cell suspensions from all of the thiobacilli catalyzed completely the oxidation of sulfide, thiosulfate, and sulfite to sulfate. The oxidation of thiosulfate in R. palustris …

Age At Menarche: Accuracy Of Recall After Thirty-Nine Years, Albert Damon, Carl J. Bajema

Among 143 women whose menarcheal age was documented during a longitudinal growth study, recall 39 years after the even gave the following results: menarche was recalled as 0.2 years after earlier than the actual date (p<0.05), the standard deviation of recalled age was 0.3 years larger (p<0.01), and the coefficient of correlation, r, between actual and recalled age was 0.60 +/- s.e. 0.05.

This experimental study tested the effect of prenatal instruction on the success of a group of mothers who desired to breast feed their infants. It was hypothesized that mothers receiving information on how to nurse their infants, how to prevent complications and how to cope with common problems of breast feeding would have a higher success rate than those not so instructed.

Criteria for success was that the mothers would have an adequate supply of milk to meet the nutritional demands of their infant without supplementation, would have fewer and less severe complications, and would express a higher degree of …

A descriptive-comparative survey using content analysis of medical records has been done to determine the frequency with which emotional disorders are identified by medical personnel in the population hospitalized in small general hospitals in north-central Nebraska.

A systematic, random sample of medical records was taken from two hospitals arbitrarily included in the study on the basis of bed capacity and distance from mental health facilities.

Each medical record that was reviewed has been placed in a category based on whether an emotional disorder was identified in it by the medical personnel, or whether it contained recorded behaviors that could indicate …

In this paper an attempt is made to determine what factors propel given individuals toward self destruction. Durkheim's typology of suicides is utilized and an analysis of the social and psychological components of each type undertaken. The social structure is viewed from the vantage point of how it influences and is internalized by members of society. James G. Matthews was a jack-of-all-trades. He worked as a coal miner for James C. Coal Company, worked for United Fuel Gas Company, the Nickel Plant, and as a mail courier. He also performed as part of a singing quartet. Mr. Matthews was born on May 30, 1902. He grew up on a farm near East Lynn, WV. After the death of his mother, Mr. Matthews attended elementary school on a part-time basis in order to work on the family farm. Two series of experiments were conducted in order to determine the effects of diet on neutrophilic phagocytosis. The first series was designed to determine the effects of varying amounts of oral glucose on phagocytosis. Blood samples from 6 to 8 subjects were drawn at fasting, and at various time periods following ingestion of 12.5, 25, 50, 75, and 100 grams of glucose. In the second series of experiments, blood samples were taken from 11 subjects after an overnight fast and 2 hours following ingestion of one of 4 different liquid diets, which included the following: the meal (I), consisting of …

A problem common to all of the full-banded orthodontic techniques currently in use is the delivery of an optimum force to each tooth without disrupting the forces on other teeth. This problem becomes especially acute during finishing. It arises out of Newton's third law, which states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Thus, in full-banded techniques, a force on one tooth gives rise to generally undesirable reactive forces on other teeth in its vicinity.

Anencephaly and spina bifida cystica are two of the most common severe congenital malformations consistently observed in human populations. Both represent defects in the neural tube and share a significant number of similar epidemiological associations among them, occupational class, geography, sex ratio, maternal age, year and season of the year. In anencephaly most of the brain and upper skull never form usually resulting in death within a few hours of birth. This paper, accompanied by the discussions and the preceding introduction, was delivered May 9, 1974 as part of an anniversary celebration commemorating a half century of existence for the psychiatric unit at Henry Ford Hospital. Established in 1924 by the late Thomas J. Heldt, M.D., as a division of neuropsychiatry in the department of medicine, the unit is generally believed to be the first to be incorporated into a general hospital anywhere. It was - and is - conducted without physical restraints of any kind, without isolation of patients, and without segregation of men and women.

Verrucous Carcinoma Of The Oral Cavity, Lane C. Thomsen

This paper describes 39 cases of oral verrucous carcinoma. This study reports on 20 cases from the San Diego Tumor Group and 19 cases from the Oral Pathology Service which showed the characteristic features of verrucous carcinoma. Twenty three patients were men and 16 were women. In the majority of the cases the lesion was exophytic and had a papillary surface. The buccal mucosa and gingiva were the sites most frequently involved. The characteristic histologic pattern consisted of keratinized well-differentiated epithelium exhibiting irregular folds. In addition there was an inward projection of bulbous rete ridges. Surgical excision was the treatment …

Bone Regeneration Over Submerged Dental Roots In Dogs, Roger Lee Plata

Nonendodontically treated roots were submerged 1.5 to 2.0 mm. below the alveolar crest in three dogs. Twelve roots were treated in this manner. Regeneration of alveolar bone can be seen in three weeks with complete bone coverage in five weeks. A complete lamina dura can be seen around the amputated roots.

Bone failed to regenerate over two of the twelve roots. In one case there was delayed healing due to the early loss of some sutures. A sinus tract developed connecting the oral environment with the contents of the pulp. This led to bone resorption and a necrotic pulp. In …

A histological comparison of forty-four human teeth in which vital partial pulpectomies were performed, and the pulp stumps covered with dycal, N-2 and ZOE was carried out. The time interval at which the teeth were extracted for study was ten, twelve and fourteen weeks. These teeth were on patients twelve through seventeen years of age and were to he extracted for orthodontic purposes. The teeth were caries free, vital and asymptomatic. The percent retaining vital tissue, time intervals and type of paste were as follows:

For optimal growth and development during the teens, there needs to be sufficient intake of food to meet the nutritional requirements. Pregnancy during that time increases the nutritional needs. Studies have shown that teenage girls generally have poor eating habits, not meeting the nutritional requirements.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether special nutrition education classes would improve eating habits of a group of pregnant teenagers. The faculty has been searching for accurate methods of evaluating the curriculum and performance of graduates of Brokaw Collegiate School of Nursing since the founding of the school at Illinois Wesleyan in 1959. Evaluation of these aspects would result in the discovery of faults and strengths in the program, thereby enabling the faculty to improve the curriculum annually. The school utilizes student evaluations of each course following its completion to determine how well the course objectives were fulfilled.
