Through the years, various studies (1-5) have been done regarding the prevalent practice of adding one or more drugs to parenteral fluids. The greater variety of drugs being used intravenously, plus the formulation of newer and more complex parenteral fluids, has led to an increased awareness of potential incompatibilities existing between drug and solution. Recognition of the hazards of such extemporaneous combinations has necessitated the study of drug stability in solution.

The objective of this report is to determine compatibility characteristics of admixtures prepared from a series of balance intravenous electrolyte solutions and a group of commonly used therapeutic agents. …

There is a paucity of information concerning the occurrence and distribution of the Saprolegniaceae of Illinois. These fungi, commonly called "water molds", are of particular interest as many are potential parasites of fish, crustaceans, and other aquatic plant and animal life. It is of considerable interest to students of the fungi and of practical value to the fisheries biologists and environmentalists to have available a means of identification for these organisms.

From the standpoint of physiologists, emphasis has been placed on viewing the chemical nature of the membrane as an operational barrier to the free diffusion of ions. This tends to explain the fact that the ionic composition of the cytoplasm of the animal cell differs from its external fluid environment.

It is well know that where sodium is the principal cation of the extracellular fluid, potassium has such a role inside the cell. The basic unmedicated formula consists of dextran, sorbitol, Miranol 2 MCA Modified, and water. The major advantages of the film are 1) fast release rates, 2) ease of application to denuded skin without aggravation, and 3) lack of necessity for removal, hence no aggravation. However, it is extremely sensitive to moisture and elevated temperatures which is a major disadvantage. Excessive humidity will solubilize the film or make it too tacky to handle while very low humidity causes the film to lose its flexibility. Also, elevated temperatures remove moisture from the film and cause it to lose flexibility much as with …

Thirty female outpatients with metastatic breast carcinoma were evaluated using two operational models constructed for the purpose of assessing and assigning a quantitative score for (A) extent of metastatic disease and (B) level of functional disability. These patients were drawn from the population of patients with disseminated breast carcinoma attending the medical oncology clinics at the Medical College of Virginia Tumor Clinics for a 49 day period in 1975. The data from this patient sample were used to test several hypotheses.

Each patient underwent an initial screening procedure designed to clearly identify those patients with disseminated disease. This was followed …

The literature suggests a relationship between the perception and production of speech sounds. Data has been gathered from normal and sound-defective children who were three years, five years, and older. No comparative research has been done with four-year-old children. Furthermore, no longitudinal data has been gathered on a single group of children. This study was essentially a replication of the Bronsema (1974) research. Specifically, it compared the self-perception and other-perception performances of Bronsema's research population, in 1975, the year following the Bronsema study. A review oi the literature on the hyperventilation syndrome reveals a variety of treatment approaches and a virtual absence of controlled studies of this common problem. Attempts to treat the condition by changing the respiratory pattern through mechanical means can be traced back to the first century A.D. The "paper bag method" of treatment has many psychological drawbacks and is often unsuccessful. Several avenues of drug treatment have been explored: acidifiers, minor tranquilizers, antidepressants, and stimulants. Reports of success with insight-oriented intensive psychotherapy are scarce. Some forms of group psychotherapy have been tried with success. The model of the "medical …

A Study Of Naturally Occurring Algicides Produced By Freshwater Algae, Denny O. Harris, Harry D. Caldwell

The mode of action of the algicide produced by Pandorina morum was examined by exposing Volvox globator and isolates spinach chloroplasts to a partially purified algicide preparation. Oxygen evolution of Volvox, whole chloroplasts and broken chloroplasts (minus the Calvin cycle),was reduced indicating that the algicide inhibits the light reactions of photosynthesis. Oxygen evolution studies of other Volvocaceae confirmed the observation that Pandorina morum is not significantly influenced by its own inhibitor. Molecular weight approximation by gel filtration established that the inhibitor has a low molecular weight (probably below 100 mw). The Relationship Of Alcohol Consumption In Rats To Morphine And Codeine Intake And The Metabolism Of Dopamine, Hsiu Fen Liu

The effects of morphine and codeine free-choice alcohol consumption in male Sprague-Dawley rats were studied. Intakes of a 10% alcohol solution in milliliters per 100 gm. of body weight were on recorded weekly. No difference was found in the alcohol intake of rats given either a morphine-supplemented diet (0.01% of the diet) or daily injection of morphine sulfate (2 mg./kg.); however, there was a significant lower intake of water (p < .05) in those rats fed the diet with morphine. Total fluid consumption of both groups given the morphine-supplemented diet and daily injection of morphine sulfate was decreased (p < .05). It was found that morphine did not affect the percentage of total fluid consumed as alcohol or the weight gain.

Two levels of codeine phosphate (10 mg./kg. and 20 mg./kg.) were injected subcutaneously into rats twice a day. It was observed that the codeine significantly decreased alcohol intake in rats …

For the individual with bronchial asthma, an asthmatic attack can be a life threatening experience. A theory of bronchial asthma as a conditioned response has been recently proposed by several investigators. It was suggested that this conditioned response may be modified by lowering the arousal level, and as a result, decreasing the asthmatic response.

The problem identified in this exploratory study was to measure the effects of relaxation on the smaller or peripheral airways of a convenience sample of six asthmatic subjects fourteen to seventy years of age. It was hypothesized that an increased degree of total body relaxation would …
