A Comparison Of Meteorologic Measurements From Irrigated And Non-Irrigated Plots, Provo, Ut, 1970–1972, Ferron L. Andersen, Phil D. Wright, J. Carl Fox

A comparative study of micrometeorologic conditions on irrigated and non-irrigated pasture plots was conducted at Provo, Utah, from 1970 to 1972. Daily measurements were taken of the following: precipitation cither as rain or snow, new snowfall and total snow depth during the winter; relative humidity in a standard weather shelter; number of hours at maximum relative humidity; cloud cover each morning; potential evaporation; total wind 1 m above ground level; temperature extremes in a standard weather shelter; and temperatures both on irrigated and non-irrigated plots with sensing devices located 5 cm beneath soil surface under grass cover, at soil surface …

A Taxonomic Study Of The Western Collared Lizards, Crotaphytus Collaris And Crotaphytus Insularis, Nathan M. Smith, Wilmer W. Tanner

The heterogeneous nature of the collared lizards west of the Colorado River prompted this study. Samples from known populations of C. c. auriceps, C. c. baileyi, and C. c. fruscus were used as a base for defining the western populations. External morphology and cranial morphology were compared by cluster, canonical, and discriminant analyses.

Results of these analyses show a western complex of four populations which are distinct from the three base populations of the collaris complex. Members within the western complex are distinguishable with at least 90 percent reliability by discriminant analysis. Because of intergradation patterns seen in western Sonora, …

The Effect Of Pre-Exposure To Sucrose On The Acquisition And Extinction Of A Conditioned Aversion, Shirlee Fenwick

Twenty-eight female, water deprived rats were given 5 minutes access to sucrose for either 1,7,14, or 21 days. They were then given LiC1 injections every third day until an aversion to the sucrose developed. The results indicated that as amount of pre-exposure to sucrose increased, the number of illnesses required to develop an aversion increased. Also, the rate of extinction of the conditioned aversion was inversely related to the number of exposures required. to establish the aversion.

[From the Discussion] In summary, we have shown that prostaglandin E1, when injected in the rabbit knee produces synovitis and cartilage matrix degradation. The finding that salicylate cannot prevent this degeneration whereas chloroquine can., is most likely due to their different mechanisms of action in this system. Whereas chloroquine's ability to stabilize membranes is protective int his experiment, salicylate's ability to prevent the biosynthesis of prostaglandins is by passed and therefore is not.

Taxonomy Of The Genus Chloris (Gramineae), Dennis E. Anderson

This study is a worldwide taxonomic treatment utilizing endomorphic characters such as cytology, histology, and embryology, in addition to the traditional exomorphic features. New chromosome numbers and histological information are reported. Relationships between Chloris and other genera in the Chlorideae are discussed. A total of 56 species is recognized in the genus; each is described and illustrated. Complete synonymies are included as well as a list of unidentified or rejected names. Distributions and maps are given for each species, along with lists of specimens examined during studies at various herbaria. Reports of field studies involving introgression among certain species are …

Greenhouse Fungicide — Environmental Carcinogen?, Marvin D. Anderson, Herbert S. Rosenkranz

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

A simple screening method, in which a bacterial mutant deficient in its ability to repair DNA, was used to detect genetic damage from a widely-used fungicide. The finding strengthens the suspicion that it may be a potent human carcinogen. The unique role of the physician in eliciting a history of exposure from a patient with cancer is emphasized in the case report.

The Nutritive Value And Supplementation Of Ogi (Pap), The Major Nigerian Weaning Food, Elizabeth E. Gyaami

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the nutritive value of ogi, which is the national weaning food in Nigeria, and to supplement it with indigenous foods that are easily produced in Nigeria, available in the local market, locally used, and within the economic capacity of the people. The protein content of corn and ogi was determined by the Kjeldahl method and the amino acid content was determined by ionexchange chromatography. The quality of the foods was evaluated by the rat growth method and the protein efficiency ratio (PER).

Pharmacokinetics is that area of pharmacology concerned with the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination of drugs. The processes by which absorption, distribution, and elimination take place are referred to as unit processes. These occur independently and concurrently, and involve such activities as absorption into the blood, elimination from the blood, distribution between the blood and tissue, inactivation in tissues, and finally, elimination from the blood. Drug handling by the body can be characterized by the rate for each step or, more often, the rate of all processes. Classification of observed kinetics for these rate processes includes first-order, zero-order, and capacity-limited …

One of the most important things for the physician to recognize in referring a patient to the orthopedic surgeon for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis is the goal of surgical correction. The primary goal in surgical treatment of diseased joints in the lower extremity is relief of pain. Some pain-free patients have such severe deformities that a surgical procedure may be undertaken in order to improve and restore function, accepting certain calculated risks; however, to improve function surgically in a pain-free joint requires complete and full understanding on the part of the patient as well as the physician.

Systemic manifestations of gonococcal disease, such as arthritis, are often sterile on the usual culture methods used to grow gonococci. Allergic mechanisms have been invoked to explain this but with little evidence to support the concept. With the report by Holmes et al., that L-forms of gonococci were isolated from joint fluid of a patient with gonococcal arthritis, we decided to investigate the possible role of L-forms in gonococcal disease.

It will be my purpose to show that it provides an elegant way of handling the great majority of pituitary problems, at least the ones that I have encountered, although it has its shortcomings as well as its advantages.
