Synovial fluid from a case of pyarthrosis was cultured for fungi, mycobacteria, aerobes and anaerobes with negative results. A Cell Wall Deficient (CWD) form was isolated in numerous cultures which showed the physico-chemical reactions characteristic of wall deficient M. tuberculosis.

The study was designed to determine the hour when temperature peaks occur in adult hospitalized females, and to find if factors such as age and natural or surgical menopause with replacement therapy affect the thermal circadian cycle. Previous studies indicated that the temperature peak occurs in afternoon or early evening, but there were no investigations to determine if aging, sex, or menopause affects the temperature cycle.

The sample included 62 female patients, 29 between 21 and 62 years of age, and 33 between 65 and 90 years. Each subject admitted to the study was screened against fifteen qualifying criteria. Some …

The purpose of this research was to determine if forward movement of the lower incisor in a horizontal plane during active treatment affected the post-retention stability. The post-active treatment position of the lower incisor in relation to APo plane, NB plane and mandibular plane was also studied to determine if it affected the post-retention stability.

To determine where the lower incisors were moved during treatment, the beginning cephalometric tracings were superimposed over the end of active treatment tracings on the Corpus Axis at Supra-Pogonion. The amount of change in the incisal edge was measured to the nearest millimeter on a …

The literature indicates that many diabetic patients do not adhere to their prescribed medical regimen and that there is a need to discover factors that stimulate compliant behavior. It has been proposed that the patient's decision to accept or reject treatment has many determinants. This study explored the effect of one such determinant, the locus of control (the source of the stimulus for a person's behavior). It was hypothesized that a person with an internal locus (one who believes his actions influence his future) would be more likely to comply with a medical regimen than one with an external locus …

The primary purpose of the investigation was to compare the responses of white, lower-class kindergartners and first graders with white, middle-class kindergartners and first graders on the Boehm Test of Basic Concepts (BTBC) in order to determine if a statistically significant difference existed between socioeconomic level and the number of concepts correctly identified on the BTBC. A secondary purpose was to determine is a significant relationship existed between concept development as measure by the BTBC and intelligence from an assessment of receptive vocabulary by using the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT).

In interpreting scintillation images, one often is confronted with a variety of deviations from the typically normal study that need not represent definite pathology. Apart from normal anatomic variants in the position, shape, or configuration of an organ, one must also be prepared to appreciate alterations due to the radiodiagnostic agent employed and aberrations caused by faulty or improperly used instruments. Additionally, physiologic and/or functional changes associated with specific organ studies have provided a major source of error in routine image interpretation. The Birth Of A New Department At Mcv/Vcu-Human Genetics, Peter Mamunes

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In recognition of the central role of genetics in the health professions, the MCV/VCU School of Basic Sciences and Graduate Studies substantially enlarged its commitment to this discipline by creating a new Department of Human Genetics as of September 1, 1975, under the chairmanship of Walter E. Nance, M.D, Ph.D., an internationally renowned medical geneticist. Dr. Nance comes to Richmond from Indianapolis where he was Professor of Medicine and Medical Genetics at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Here at MCV/VCU, Dr. Nance will also have joint appointments in both the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics.

Seed of lupin varieties now available can be combined with wheat or barley to produce a balanced diet for growing/finishing pigs, and lupin seed has become a popular ingredient of pig rations.

As a protein concentrate, lupin seed is a satisfactory alternative to meatmeal, provided adequate amounts of calcium and phosphorus are added as supplements. Without the addition of these elements to rations of lupin seed and grain, a number of problems are likely to arise.

Trials at the Medina Pig Research Station have shown that Christmas Island rock phosphate is the cheapest and most convenient source of supplementary calcium …

The pig was a forest-dwelling animal from the beginning of its history. In some parts of the world it has been domesticated for at least 7000 years. The European breeds of domestic swine were derived from the local wild pig, Sus scrofa. Herds ranged in pastures and forests and kept indoors only for fattening. The breeds in the Far East were derived from another wild pig, Sus vittatus, a smaller animal with shorter legs and a higher reproductive ability (Mohr 1960; Zeuner 1963). The two types interbred readily. The modem breeds of pig evolved from different crossings between the two …

With the development of shorter-lived, organ-specific radiopharmaceuticals, much of the manufacture and quality control of these products have shifted from commercial manufactures to individual nuclear medicine laboratories. Recognizing this fact, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is encouraging quality assurance by proposing that "an authorized physician may permit technicians and other paramedical personnel to perform the preparation and quality control testing of radiopharmaceuticals..." Cohen has categorized pharmaceutical controls into chemical, biological, and physical. Figure 1 is a diagram of these controls. In each control a degree of purity is implied and is often determined by comparison to standard.

Hydrodynamic Structure Of Bovine Serum Albumin Determined By Transient Electric Birefringence, A. K. Wright, M. R. Thompson

Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations

Birefringence relaxation studies on bovine serum albumin (BSA) reveal transient decay described by a double exponential process. The values of the relaxation times lead to estimation of the size of the equivalent ellipsoid of revolution for BSA. Previous measurements of transient birefringence for BSA have shown a single relaxation process, since the apparatus used in obtaining those data was not fast enough to detect the faster relaxation process.

Treflan And The Oxygen Consumption Of Green Sunfish (Lepomis Cyanellus), Barbara Jo Warner

Oxygen consumption rates of 51 green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus, Rafinesque) were monitored over five hours exposure to Treflan E.C. concentrations of 0, 0.32, 0.56, 1.0, and 2.0 ppm. There was a great variation in the responses of the fish at each concentration; and Student's t-tests revealed no significant differences. However, graphs of the mean hourly oxygen consumption rates showed certain trends. During the fifth hour of exposure, there appears to be an acclimation to the Treflan at concentrations of 0.32 and 0.56 ppm; but no such acclimation at the higher concentrations of 1.0 and 2.0 ppm.
