Prostaglandin Synthesis In The Feline Adrenal Cortex, Suzanne Gale Laychock

Theses and Dissertations

Studies were carried out on the feline adrenal gland to ascertain the role of prostaglandins in the mechanism of action of ACTH. Using tritiated arachidonic acid as a prostaglandin (PG) precursor , it was demonstrated by column and thin layer chromatography techniques that isolated trypsinized adrenocortical cells possess an active PG synthetase capable of synthesizing radiolabeled PGE, PGF, and PGA/B-like substances. Concentrations of ACTH (125 - 250 _μU) which stimulate steroidogenesis enhanced the conversion of radiolabeled arachidonic acid to PGE, PGF and the PGA/B products extracted from cortical cells and incubation media.

The Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938 required a producer of a new drug to substantiate the safety of the drug product when used as recommended; however, the introduction of the Kefauver-Harris Amendments of 1962 considerably strengthened this act. These amendments intensified the controls on quality, labeling, and safety, while adding a new requirement that all NDA's should be able to present substantial evidence of the effectiveness of the drug product for its indicated use of uses (4). Transient hypoxia or hypoglycemia in the neonate frequently leads to permanent neural damage. In developing countries, malnutrition is likely to be superimposed upon such damage. Using septal lesions as a tool, we attempted to assess the interaction between neonatal brain damage and subsequent malnutrition.

Half of the offspring of each sex in each of 28 litters of albino rats received lesions restricted to the septum at 24 hours of age. Stereospecific Opiate Binding In Human Erythrocyte Membranes And Changes In Heroin Addicts, Leo G. Abood, Holly G. Atkinson, Mary Macneil

Stereospecific opiate binding has been demonstrated in human erythrocyte membranes, having a Kd of 9-10(-9) M. In most respects the binding characteristics resemble those of synaptic membranes. These included the correlation of binding affinity and pharmacological potency of opiates; competition by naloxone; inhibition by Ca2+ and Na+; and sensitivity to phospholipases and trypsin. A comparison of stereospecific opiate binding in control human subjects and heroin addicts revealed a 43% increase in the addict group.

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Basic principles of radiation biology and radiation tolerance are reviewed. The Implications for radiation therapy of newer staging techniques in carcinoma of the prostate such as exploratory laparotomy, lymphangiography, and bone marrow acid prosphatase are discussed. A technique for treating the prostate and para-aortic lymph nodes in continuity is presented. Complications and results of therapy are discussed.

Although pins have been used since the 1800's for retention of dental restorations, their widespread use had been limited because supporting techniques such as impression, die materials, better handpieces and drills have only been perfected in the last two decades.

The pin technique allows for greater retention of restorative materials which otherwise might require considerable reduction of sound tooth substance; this is particularly paramount when insufficient coronal tooth structure is present. Also, the placing of pins in divergent directions gives excellent retention. Pin-retained castings reduce the need for deep cavity preparation in some cases.

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

From these studies it may be concluded that it is highly probable that there are at least two generations per year of the tropical cattle tick in Northeastern Thailand, depending upon the climatic conditions and availability of the host. In areas where hosts are numerous, it is possible that there are 4 or 5 generations per year. Because of the potential reproduction ability of the adult female tropical cattle tick, the durability of the unfed seed tick, and the inadequate control measures now available, increased cattle production in the Northeast could be seriously hampered.
