Some Of The Effects Of Domestic Sewage Discharged Into Hickman And Jessamine Creeks In Jessamine County, Kentucky, Henry H. Howell, Mike W. Jones, Robert A. Kuehne

KWRRI Research Reports

A 6-week study was made in the summer of 1971 as an initial effort to determine the extent of pollution that the three sewage disposal plants in Jessamine County, Kentucky, are contributing to its streams. With the rapid population increase in Lexington and nearby municipalities, this study should furnish a basis of comparison for future investigations. Eighteen collecting stations were established in riffle areas of Hickman and Jessamine Creeks, and coliform bacteria, macro-invertebrate populations, fish populations and chemical water quality of each riffle area were studied.

The first genetic polymorphism to be described in man was the ABO blood group system. Ths system proved to be present as a membrane antigen of the cells of almost all organs of the body. In this it not only stimulates histocompatibility antigens but also helps to determine ABO compatibility between organ recipients and their donors. The presence of the ABH and HL-A antigens in tissues and their stability on storage allows typing mummified bodies despite the passage of thousands of years.

Peru is one of the areas of the world where art depicts the life of the people while the people themselves are present in the form of mummies to confirm much of what is seen in art. Chemicals And Food: An Account About Additives, Wayland E. Noland

Food additives are listed by functional category and discussed in terms of the scale of their use and relative risks in terms of long-term human toxicity. The greatest risks appear to lie with the antimicrobial preservative agents, and food colors (which serve only a cosmetic purpose); these and the synthetic sweeteners are discussed in relatively greater detail.

This Peruvian-American cooperative study of paleopathology of the pre-Columbian Peruvian cultures of Southern Peru began in 1971. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the medical and dental health status of these cultures which date from 600 BC to the Spanish conquest. While several authors such as Leigh, Moodie, Stewart, and Goaz and Miller have studied the dental morphology of Northern Peruvians, the paleodontology and oral paleopathology of the Southern Peruvians has not been recorded. This paper reports dental findings on the morphologic characteristics of the shovel-shaped incisor, Carabelli’s cusp, and protostylid.

Since procaine has both local anaesthetic and central stimulant actions its presence in the blood or urine of racing horses is forbidden. After rapid intravenous injection of procaine HC1 (2.5 mg/Kg) in thoroughbred mares plasma levels of this drug fell rapidly (t 1/2 alpha = 5 min) and then more slowly (t 1/2 beta = 50.2 min). These kinetics were well fitted by a two compartment open model (Model I). This model gave an apparent Vdbeta for procaine in the horse of about 3,500 litres. Since procaine was about 45% bound to equine plasma protein this gives a true Vdbeta …

[From the Introduction] This thesis is concerned with two aspects of spontaneous regression of retinoblastoma: 1) Retinoblastoma may lack TAF or has inhibitory factor to TAF and spontaneous regression occurs by vascular insufficiency; 2) Retinoblastoma cells undergo necrosis with an increased susceptibility when the calcium concentration is elevated.

Three gas-liquid chromatographic (G.L.C.) procedures discussed have been designed around the four "esses" of detection tests--speed, sensitivity, simplicity, and specificity. These techniques are admirably applicable to the very low plasma drug levels encountered in blood testing under pre-race conditions. The methods are equally applicable to post-race testing procedures, where both blood and urine samples are tested. Drugs can only rarely be detected by the electron capture detector (E.C.D.) without a prior derivatization step, which conveys to the drug(s) high electron affinity. Because of broad applicability, two derivatizing agents, heptafluorobutyric (HFBA) and pentafluorpropionic (PFPA) anhydrides are employed. The three techniques, allowing …

Measurement Of Permeability Of The Cell Membrane To Water, Richard Moore, Frederick Thornburgh, Donggyu Jin

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The water permeability was measured for blood cells from normal subjects and for blood cells from patients with leukemia. The method of measurement of the kinetics of water influx employed a stopped flow apparatus. The method of calculation of results was based on irreversible thermodynamics. The measurements and calculations were both performed with the assistance of a computer. The water permeability of the leukemic cells was decreased from normal, and the values were more variable than normal. Leukemia changes the structure of the cell membrane.
