Indiana’s Wabash River is being polluted with contaminated water runoff from precipitation events. A lack of pervious land cover has led to an accumulation of fertilizer, sediment, and waste in the river. Green infrastructure, a stormwater management practice that mimics the natural ecosystem, is one of the most effective ways to prevent pollution from stormwater runoff and benefit the community. This project consisted of a rain garden installation at the Lafayette Fueling Station, a site where frequent water drainage and water runoff into the Wabash occurs. A new sub-type of folia named “reverse pseudo-gour” has been observed and described in the Nerja Cave, southern Spain. It consists of fairly vertical, thin barriers (about 5 mm high and 2 mm thick) that develop on the underside of a sub-horizontal surface (shelfstone) and grow in the opposite direction to normal gours (rimstone dams), generating sinuous shapes. Their mineral composition is essentially calcium carbonate, although globular aggregates composed of clay and phosphate minerals have also been identified. When students find value in technology and can apply that technology in their learning and beyond, they become more actively engaged in the classroom. After having first-year seminar students use Web 2.0 technology, specifically a website creation tool as part of an assignment, they participated in a survey to provide feedback over their engagement in creating a Google Sites® website. Quantitative and qualitative data was collected and analyzed to determine students’ perceptions of their engagement when using website creation tools to complete a modified discussion assignment. Planning and differentiation are key components of elementary teachers’ work in classrooms. Therefore, teacher education programs must prepare their preservice teachers for this future responsibility. This study examines how the integration of a more targeted lesson plan template and increased explicit in-class instruction impacts preservice teachers’ knowledge and implementation of differentiated instruction in an Elementary Education teacher certification program. Talking about race can improve children’s ethnic identities, prepare them for encounters with racism, and reduce their racial biases. Yet adults hold intuitive beliefs (e.g., children do not notice race) that limit their conversations about race with children. Children can also initiate conversations about race, but children have been found to avoid talking about race by 10 years. It has been suggested that children avoid talking about race because of colorblind norms, but children’s reasoning about color blindness as a norm is not well understood. Transcription factor EB (TFEB) is a master regulator of lysosomal biogenesis and autophagy that plays a key role in the regulation of cellular clearance pathways. TFEB is regulated via a complex array of post-translational modifications (PTMs), but the exact molecular mechanism that regulates TFEB stability has remained elusive. Here, we show that TFEB levels are critically regulated by a defined phosphorylation-ubiquitination cascade. A human kinome screen identifies IKK (inhibitor of κB kinase) as a TFEB modifier, and a combination of phosphorylation assays, mass spectrometry analyses, and site-specific mutagenesis unveils a previously unrecognized TFEB phospho-degron (423SPFPSLS429) as the target of IKK. …

Cryptococcus neoformans (Cn) is an opportunistic fungal pathogen responsible for over 112,000 deaths each year. This yeast is ubiquitous in the environment, where it is particularly associated with soil, trees, and bird excreta. When a susceptible host inhales infectious particles, Cn can proliferate in the lungs before disseminating to the brain to cause an often-fatal meningoencephalitis. Cryptococcosis primarily afflicts those living with uncontrolled HIV/AIDS, accounting for ~15% of AIDS-related mortality. The antifungals available to treat this devastating disease are few in number, toxic to patients, and largely inaccessible in resource-limited settings. In a unanimous decision, the Court affirmed the invalidation of Amgen’s functional antibody claims for lack of enablement. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of postoperative naloxone with the development of new substance use disorder (SUD), overdose, and death within 6 months of otolaryngologic surgery.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort database study on TriNetX.

METHODS: Adult patients who underwent tonsil surgery (noncancerous), thyroid/parathyroid, septorhinoplasty, otology/neurotology, sinus/anterior skull base, and head and neck cancer surgeries between January 2003 and April 2023. Patients were excluded if they had an instance of SUD or overdose recorded in their charts prior to surgery, or had undergone another surgery within that 6-month time frame.
